NASCAR rebuffs additional request for injunction
NASCAR has slammed two of its racing teams for seeking the “extraordinary” relief of an already-refused court-mandated contract allowing them to compete in every race without waiving their antitrust claims. NASCAR has slammed two of its racing teams for seeking the “extraordinary” relief of an already-refused court-mandated contract allowing them to compete in every race without waiving their antitrust claims.
The stock car racing association said in a filing on Wednesday that 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports are trying to “have their cake and eat it too” by seeking to dismantle NASCAR’s business model of “chartered” teams through a monopolisation lawsuit while applying for a preliminary injunction to extract their desired contract terms.
“Regardless of the outcome of this litigation, NASCAR cannot be forced into a contractual relationship with Plaintiffs,” said its counsel at Latham & Watkins.
NASCAR also argued that the US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit’s decision overturning an initial preliminary injunction awarded to the teams foreclosed their latest demand for “extraordinary relief”.
Last October, 23XI Racing and Front Row sued NASCAR for allegedly using acquisitions and restrictive contracts to block competition for the sport.
The plaintiffs claimed NASCAR sought to force them to sign a new contract for 2025 that would require them to waive any future antitrust claims against the stock car racing association and sign over intellectual property rights in exchange for being a “chartered” team with guaranteed entry to all races.
The US District Court for the Western District of North Carolina sided with the plaintiffs, issuing an order requiring NASCAR to grant the two teams charters because the release clause itself violated the Sherman Act.
However, the Fourth Circuit reversed the decision earlier this month. The appellate panel said the release clause likely did not violate antitrust law, and regardless, the lower court could not force NASCAR into signing those contracts.
23XI Racing and Front Row now seek a similar injunction to block NASCAR from selling their charters until after the trial in December. They said on Monday that the Fourth Circuit only considered the release clause while ignoring the broader threats they face from NASCAR’s alleged monopolisation scheme.
“NASCAR has signaled its intention to immediately move to sell or issue Plaintiffs’ charters to other entities – putting Plaintiffs in irreparable jeopardy of never getting their charters back and going out of business,” they wrote.
On Wednesday, NASCAR argued that this is functionally the same request that the Fourth Circuit already shot down. The plaintiffs still seek to have charters without the release of antitrust claims that the Fourth Circuit upheld, it said.
That opinion both forecloses the lower court from approving the request and means the plaintiffs are not likely to succeed on their claims, NASCAR said.
“There is no logical basis for their request that the Court issue injunctive relief excising any such release terms,” it added.
NASCAR also argued that 23XI and Front Row will not suffer irreparable harm if they lose their charters, noting various public statements in which officials on the teams said they would still race regardless.
“It is impossible to reconcile the story Plaintiffs are telling the Court, with what they are saying outside the Court,” NASCAR said.
NASCAR then accused the plaintiffs of manufacturing evidence to support their speculative claims, but most of the challenged evidence was filed under seal.
In one example, the teams attempted to portray a text message as calling NASCAR’s contract demands “unreasonable”. However, NASCAR said it later discovered that the text was about Curtis Polk, who co-leads 23XI with Michael Jordan, planning to publicly protest the charter contract negotiations at a race.
“Whether a jury will ultimately credit Plaintiffs’ biased and misrepresented evidentiary shenanigans at trial is to be determined,” NASCAR said. “But at this stage nothing about the evidence presents an ‘indisputably clear’ likelihood of Plaintiffs prevailing at trial.”
23XI and Front Row declined to comment.

Grant Finds IMS Victory Lane Again in Indiana Sprint Week Opener – Speedway Digest
Justin Grant continued his knack for winning at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, capturing the opening race of the 38th annual USAC NOS Energy Drink Indiana Sprint Week Presented by Honest Abe Roofing on Thursday night at The Dirt Track at IMS. Justin Grant continued his knack for winning at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, capturing the opening race of the 38th annual USAC NOS Energy Drink Indiana Sprint Week Presented by Honest Abe Roofing on Thursday night at The Dirt Track at IMS.
Grant added his seventh USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship victory this season and 61st of his career to a win in the USAC NOS Energy Drink Midget National Championship feature on the opening night of the BC39 Presented by Avanti Windows & Doors on July 1 at The Dirt Track. Grant, from Ione, California, also won the BC39 feature race in 2023 on the 1/5th-mile dirt oval inside Turn 3 of the 2.5-mile IMS oval.
“It’s the Indianapolis Motor Speedway,” Grant said. “I probably raced a little rougher than most of the sprint car guys like to race, but I come in here off the BC39, and maybe old habits die hard. I want to win at this place.”
Grant, who started fifth in the 20-car field, took the lead for the first time and for good with 16 laps remaining in the 35-lap feature. He earned $10,000 for the victory in the No. 4 TOPP Motorsports car.
Logan Seavey finished second in the No. 57 Abacus Racing car, followed by pole sitter Robert Ballou in the No. 12 Ballou Motorsports machine.
Ballou led the first 19 laps, but Grant used both the top and bottom grooves of the clay oval to climb from fifth to second. With 16 laps to go, Grant used the high line in Turns 3 and 4 to power past Ballou, whose car started to emit white plumes of smoke from its left side.
Seavey passed Ballou for second on the next lap and set his sights on Grant. A three-car tangle in Turn 2 triggered the final caution of the feature race with nine laps to go.
Grant got a strong jump on the restart, pulling away slightly. But Seavey found grip and slid under Grant in Turns 1 and 2 to nose slightly ahead with eight laps remaining. But Grant used the low line to quickly power ahead of Seavey on the back straightaway and eased away over the final seven laps for the prestigious victory.
“It was really, really tough,” Grant said. “The pace was really fast, and the top was so fast you had to kind of make some things happen there. I’m sure I didn’t make too many friends, but I wanted to get down here to Victory Lane.
“I love racing here. I think this little track is amazing. I’m the biggest hater of small racetracks in the world, and one of my favorite ones is this one. It’s kind of funny. We’ve really come a long way on our short-track stuff. I’m kind of a half-mile kind of guy. Just super excited to be here.”
USAC Indiana Sprint Week, a cornerstone of sprint car racing in the Hoosier State since 1988, has captivated fans for decades with its thrilling action and rich legacy. The 2025 Indiana Sprint Week schedule consists of eight events at eight different racetracks across a 10-night span between July 24-Aug. 2.
C.J. Leary captured the only previous visit by the USAC National Sprint Cars to The Dirt Track at IMS in September 2024, a 20-lap, non-points exhibition race during the BC39.
The focus at the Racing Capital of the World now turns to Brickyard Weekend, featuring the Pennzoil 250 for the NASCAR Xfinity Series on Saturday and the Brickyard 400 presented by PPG for the NASCAR Cup Series on Sunday. Practice for both series takes place Friday. Visit IMS.com to buy tickets or for more information.

Rumors are swirling that Spire Motorsports might be going full-time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series next year. Not official yet, but there are some pretty big hints.
Just recently a NASCAR insider shared that Spire is selling off a bunch of their Truck Series gear: chassis, engines and race-ready trucks for all tracks. That got people talking. Then a well-known rumor account chimed in and said Spire is planning to run Xfinity cars in 2026.
So what’s going on here? Spire has been killing it in the Truck Series since they picked up Kyle Busch Motorsports’ assets, but running a four-truck team plus Cup cars probably stretches the budget and resources. Selling some equipment could be a smart way to free up cash and energy to launch an Xfinity program without burning out.

What This Means for Drivers and Teams
For drivers this could be huge. Rajah Caruth who’s been turning heads in Trucks might be a prime candidate to move up. Or maybe Corey Day who’s already splitting time between Spire’s Trucks and Hendrick’s Xfinity rides could get more seat time.
There’s also curiosity about who Spire would team up with technically. They have close ties with Hendrick in Cup but Hendrick’s big Xfinity partner is JR Motorsports. So Spire would have to figure out a new alliance or go it alone.
If Spire backs out of Trucks that would shake up the Chevrolet side of things since they’ve become the top dog after Kyle Busch Motorsports and GMS Racing shut down. Niece Motorsports might fill that spot but it also leaves room for Ram and others to step up in 2026.
Bottom line: this is all still rumor territory. But the equipment sale, the chatter and the potential benefits all point to Spire gearing up for something big. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens before Daytona rolls around.

Here’s a recent motorsports story via The AP:
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Brickyard 400 fans will get their own glimpse into a Pacers and racers weekend Sunday.
Brickyard 400 organizers said Tuesday that Indiana Pacers All-Star Pascal Siakam has been selected as the pace-car driver for this weekend’s race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The announcement comes almost exactly two months after the Pacers played the New York Knicks in an Eastern Conference final game on the same day as the Indianapolis 500. The events took place just a short drive apart.
It was just the fourth time a Pacers and racers doubleheader had taken place in Indy.
Now, though, Siakam will get a chance to experience the other part, this time leading the Cup cars to the green flag in a 2025 Chevrolet Blazer EV SS. The race will take place on the historic 2.5-mile oval for the second straight year after it had been run on the track’s road course.
“Basketball and motorsports — Pacers and racers — go hand in hand in Indianapolis,” IndyCar and speedway President Doug Boles said in a statement. “Following the Pacers’ electrifying postseason run, it’s only fitting to have Pascal join us to pace the field as NASCAR’s biggest stars compete to win the In-Season Challenge and add their name to the history books with a win at the Brickyard.”
Siakam didn’t start playing basketball until he was 17 years old. He grew up in Cameroon and the three-time All-Star also is a two-time All-NBA selection and won an NBA title with the Toronto Raptors in 2019.

While it is the worst-kept secret in NASCAR, did Connor Zilisch tip his 2026 NASCAR plans earlier today at Indianapolis? Zilisch was asked about his upcoming start at Watkins Glen. He had an interesting answer about “next year” for fans interested in his next career move.
It is almost a guarantee that Connor Zilisch will be racing in the NASCAR Cup Series next season. He will be racing for Trackhouse Racing as they have already revealed they are moving on from Daniel Suárez after this season.
Still, the news isn’t officially out. Zilisch let it slip a bit. Either on purpose or by accident, he let it be known that he’s going for Sunday wins in 2026. Not that anyone is surprised to learn that fact.
“Honestly, I probably wish it was an oval for myself just because I could learn probably more. You know, I’ll go there and I’ll learn,” Zilisch said, via Steven Taranto of CBS Sports. “You know, there’s no substitute for time on Sundays, but I would definitely learn more if I was racing at Kansas or Vegas or something like that. I don’t really make those decisions, but I still feel like I’m going to be able to have more time in the Cup car, feeling the car, getting a better understanding of what I need to do to be a winning Sunday racer, and Trackhouse has been really good on the road courses lately.
“So, I have a lot of confidence in the car that we’ll have at Watkins Glen, and being able to compete with guys like SVG. You know, I want to be able to do that, and next year I feel like my best chance to win a race would be on a road course. So, the practice starts now, and that’s going to be good for me. Yeah, I’m not too worried about going out there and winning the race, but you know, by all means, I want to go and be competitive and try to run as good as possible and just have a mistake-free day, quiet day, and hopefully, come home with a good finish.”
Connor Zilisch is a young phenom. He recently turned 19 years old and already has four wins this season. The sky is the limit for the Trackhouse development driver. In his last eight races, he has finished P5 or better and has three wins in that same time.
It is clear to anyone who has watched that Zilisch is ready for Sundays. At this point, another Xfinity Series season is just redundant. Justin Marks and Trackhouse want to get Zilisch in a Cup car full-time as soon as possible.
Last year, Connor Zilisch said he wanted to be the youngest Cup champion. That will be very difficult for Zilisch. However, given his talent, you can’t put it past him.
Next year is important for Trackhouse. Ross Chastain, Shane van Gisbergen, and Connor Zilisch are a fantastic trio. The results on the track have to be there, though. Recently, the speed on ovals has not been up to standard.
So, there is work for Trackhouse to do. Marks can’t plug Zilisch into the 99 car and expect wins and championships. Zilisch is a talented driver. Winning a race isn’t easy for anyone. Winning a championship is increasingly more difficult.
Trackhouse Racing has had a long-term plan in place. Signing Connor Zilisch last year was a master move. Now, Justin Marks and his team have to follow up. Zilisch brings talent and a future, but can’t do it alone.
