YORK, Pa. – After the first day of action at the 15th Annual New Standard Invitational hosted by York College, the Ithaca College men’s wrestling team holds the seventh position out of 15 competing teams. Out of the 22 Bombers wrestlers, nine are still alive in the championship bracket, securing their places in the quarterfinals following day one.

Additionally, five other IC wrestlers will move on to the second day of competition in the consolation rounds: Will Bentrim, Matt Haycook, Eamon Callaghan, Cosmo Damiani, and Brandon Ribeiro.

Competing in the quarterfinals of their respective weight categories are:

Turner began with a 1-0 record, winning a close 4-2 decision against Alfred State’s Aaron Johnson. He is set to face JWU’s Adolfo Betancur in the quarterfinal round. Isaias Torres achieved a notable 20-4 technical fall victory over York’s Jacob Grzybek and stands at 2-0. Also at 2-0, Jackson Gray triumphed over TCNJ’s Jimmy Dolan by an 11-4 decision before pinning Owen Turnbow in 2:02 to move on to the quarterfinals.

Jake Jones, returning to the 184 lbs. class, secured victories by way of falls over Ursinus’s Jake Gross (1:29) and Washington & Lee’s Jack McCusker. Tomorrow, he will face a formidable opponent in Joel Martinovsky during his quarterfinal match. Wenchard Pierre-Louis, making his season debut in the 149 lbs. category, registered two significant wins: a 14-2 major decision over TCNJ’s Gavin Rucci and a 17-2 tech fall against Wes Tosto.

Xavier Pommells and Konrad Parker, both positioned in the top halves of their respective brackets, are also advancing to the quarterfinals. Pommells dominated TCNJ’s James Romaine, achieving a fall in 4:54 in his only match. Parker secured two pins, first defeating U.S. Merchant Marine’s Matthew Gauthler in 53 seconds, and then besting Apprentice School’s Landon Kissel in 4:36.

First-year wrestler Max Casiano showcased his skills by earning a 17-1 tech fall over Delaware Valley’s Matt Mushinsky and pinning Jason McKee in 3:52. Another newcomer, Tomah Gummow, rounded out his first day with a tech fall victory, beating Gabe Tulone 19-3.

Wrestling will continue on Saturday at 10 a.m., with U.S. Merchant Marine currently leading the team standings with 50.5 points. The top five teams are closely contested, separated by only 3.5 points, with Washington & Lee in second place at 49 points, No. 4 Johnson & Wales at 48.5, No. 19 TCNJ at 47.5, and Roanoke holding fifth place with 47 points.
