“Obviously, Mississippi State played very well today; great pitching by Chaffin (Raelin), who did a great job against us, and we had a hard time adjusting to it. They came out and swung the bats and won the game there in the last inning with the walk off. They played better than us and they deserved that win. Then, of course, being down in the second game, we were leaking a little bit but were able to string some hits together and found a way to hit Chaffin the second time and hopefully we’ll be able to carry some momentum over into the next game.”
GAME NOTES
The Longhorn momentum carried over into the top of the seventh when Joley Mitchell sent a 1-1 pitch over the center field fence for a game-tying, one-out solo home run. Kaydee Bennett, Ashton Maloney and Kayden Henry all followed with back-to-back-to-back singles with Henry’s scoring Bennett from second and giving Texas a one-run lead. A lead that was ballooned moments later when Scott hit a three-run home run, giving the senior her first career multi-home run outing.
During the second game, Texas had to, again, come from behind after Mississippi State took a 3-0 lead through the game’s first three frames. Then the Longhorns started chipping away with a fourth-inning solo home run off the bat of Scott, followed by a run-scoring single to center field off the bat of Atwood in the sixth.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
STARKVILLE, Miss. – The seventh inning giveth and taketh away from The University of Texas softball program as the Longhorns split Friday’s doubleheader at No. 18/18 Mississippi State by dropping game one, 4-3, before rally to earn a 7-3 victory in game two.
But an inning later, the Bulldogs broke the hearts of the Texas faith with a two-out, two-strike double down the left field line and into the corner and scored the game-ending run from first base to give Mississippi State the first-ever win by either team in a softball game played in Starkville.
- Entering Friday’s doubleheader near the top of the SEC in batting average, Texas junior right-handed pitcher Citlaly Gutierrez became the first opposing pitcher to strikeout Mississippi State’s Sierra Sacco multiple times in the same game this season.
- Sacco entered the weekend with just eight strikeouts in 102 official plate appearances, before Texas pitching combined to strike her out three different times throughout the course of the doubleheader.
- With her two hits in game one of Friday’s doubleheader, Texas junior Leighann Goode was credited with her first multi-hit game since going 3-for-4 against Kent State on Mar. 9, 2025.
- Goode’s 2-for-3 outing marked the first multi-hit game for the third-year Longhorn against a conference opponent since going 2-for-4 at Texas Tech on May 4, 2024.
- With her steal of second in the top of the sixth, Texas sophomore Kayden Henry has now stolen at least one base in four of the Longhorns’ eight SEC games so far this season.
- With her save to close out game two, Texas sophomore Teagan Kavan was credited with her fifth career save, which ties her for eighth place on the program’s career saves list.
- With her two runs scored in game two, Mia Scott is now two runs shy of tying Janae Jefferson’s program career runs scored record.
In game one, Texas rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth that saw Leighann Goode, Mia Scott and Reese Atwood all produce run-scoring plate appearances. But Mississippi State responded with back-to-back one-out hits to tie the game at 3-3.
- Texas (32-4, 5-3) will conclude its three-game weekend series at Mississippi State (30-6, 7-1) on Sunday, Mar. 30, when the Longhorns and Bulldogs square off at Nusz Park with a 1 p.m. CT first pitch.
