Howell Surpasses 250 Career Wins

BERKELEY – The No. 6 California women’s gymnastics team posted its second-highest score of the season Friday in the first of two home quad meets in Haas Pavilion this weekend. The Golden Bears (197.750) finished in first place followed by Arizona State (196.800) in second, BYU (196.325) in third, and Washington (195.500) in fourth.

Cal’s co-head coach Justin Howell, the program’s all-time wins leader, surpassed 250 wins and now has 252 in his career. Co-head coach Elisabeth Crandall-Howell is close to reaching a milestone of her own with 149 wins after tonight.

The Bears (18-2) posted their second-highest vault (49.400) and uneven bars (49.525) scores of the year while also putting up top-five marks on the balance beam (49.350) and the floor exercise (49.500). On the individual side Cal had 12 podium finishes and won at least a share of six event titles.

Junior eMjae Frazier took home her second all-around title of the year with a season-high 39.675 after recording four 9.9+ routines. Frazier won a share of the vault title with a 9.925, which tied for the highest score on that event by a Bear this season. The Erial, New Jersey native also tied for fourth on bars with a 9.90, placed second on beam with a season-high 9.925, and earned a share of the floor title with a season-high tying 9.925.

Cal got the night started off right with an entire rotation of powerful vaults and solid landings. Sophomore Kyen Mayhew took home a share of the bronze with a 9.90 and both senior Maddie Williams and freshman Mya Wiley added 9.875s.

For the fifth time this season Williams took home the bars title notching a 9.925 that put her in a three-way tie. The senior has now posted a 9.925 or better in three straight meets. Frazier, junior Casey Brown, and senior Ella Cesario all narrowly missed the podium with a score of 9.90.

After a relatively slow start to the night, senior Mya Lauzon joined in on the fun with a season-high 9.95 to take home the beam title. Williams, who finished second in the all-around, added another 9.875 and freshman Ondine Achampong had her second straight solid showing with a 9.85.

The Bears scored no lower than a 9.85 on floor as Cesario and Williams each recorded a 9.875 and freshman CJ Keuneke tied her career high of 9.90. Frazier and Lauzon anchored the lineup with a pair of 9.925s to split first place.

Cal is back at Haas Pavilion on Sunday at 2 p.m. to host ASU, No. 13 Stanford, and San Jose State in the regular season finale. A senior day ceremony will take place after the meet to honor Lauzon, Williams, Cesario,     Abbey Scanlon, and Jordan Kane.
