AFC Bournemouth entered this week’s The Soccer Tournament (TST) to elevate its U.S. presence ahead of the Premier League Summer Series next month, and one of its minority investors, Ryan Sports Ventures, saw an opportunity to highlight some of its other investments at the same time.

All AFC Bournemouth’s players for the seven-a-side competition wore Playermaker sensors on their cleats to track passing, shooting, possession and running data. Some of that data was then presented on the ESPN broadcast via another RSV portfolio company, Tagboard. A shoppable QR code was included in the graphics, leading to a few purchases.

There was an activation in which fans could face off against the players in a fastest shot competition using PlayerMaker. Also, the hosts of the Men in Blazers-operated channel Give N Go were on site to capture social content and take their own kicks.

“We’ve been trying to grow the U.S. fan base for the club, and so we just thought this was a perfect vehicle to do that, and then as we were bringing it, I thought, ‘What better way than to get our other portfolio companies involved?’” said Paul Hourigan, a partner at Ryan Sports Ventures and assistant coach for AFC Bournemouth’s TST team.

The plan to show the goal-scoring shot speed fizzled when AFC Bournemouth’s only goal in its ESPN-televised opener was a chip shot traveling only 31 miles per hour, “but that’s live TV,” joked Hourigan.

One of AFC Bournemouth’s other assistant coaches for TST is Jozy Altidore, the longtime USMNT striker who now owns a tech-forward training facility Sogility and brought some of his company’s tools to the tournament. Altidore was connected to the club through his friendship with Hollywood star Michael B. Jordan, a co-investor in AFC Bournemouth through the Black Knight Football Club holding company.

AFC Bournemouth lost its first two matches of the TST to Pat McAfee’s The CONCAFA Soccer Club and the Wrexham Red Dragons. Its third and likely final match is this evening against Real Athletico.

The fact that Garmin is entering the best sleep tracker race with a new product, said to be called the Garmin Index Sleep Monitor, isn’t news anymore. Several leaks over the last two weeks have all but confirmed the product’s existence. However, this time the leak has apparently come from Garmin itself, as it published – then quickly took down – a video featuring the product. The call is coming from inside the house!

First reported by Gadgets & Wearables, a regional arm of Garmin first posted the video. The report doesn’t mention which region, and as the video has been taken down, we’re unable to work our way back to the YouTube channel that originally posted it.
