EUGENE, Ore. – Northwestern men’s basketball finishes off its trip to the Pacific Northwest by facing Oregon for the third time in program history at 10 p.m. CT on Tuesday, Feb. 11 in Eugene. The contest will air on Big Ten Network with Guy Haberman (play-by-play) and Bruce Weber (analyst) on the call and can be heard on WGN Radio 720 and SiriusXM Channel 389 with Dave Eanet (play-by-play) and Billy McKinney (analyst).
 
The Wildcats (13-11, 4-9 Big Ten) are scoring an average of 73.9 points per game this season, their highest scoring season since the 1993-94 team averaged 75.0 points per game. As a team, the Wildcats are averaging 9.6 turnovers lost per game, which is the fewest in the Big Ten, and ranks 17th fewest nationally. Northwestern has had 10 or fewer turnovers in each of its last five games. The team’s 1.53 assist/turnover ratio ranks third in the Big Ten and 29th in the nation.
 
The ‘Cats register 7.6 steals per game, which is third in the Big Ten. Northwestern has averaged over 7+ steals per game in each of the last three seasons, the first time it has done that since 2006-09. The Wildcats pull down 11.1 offensive rebounds per game, which is fifth in the conference. It is the program’s highest total in a season since 1996-97 (11.9).
 
Junior Nick Martinelli was named to the Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason Watch List last week. Martinelli leads the Big Ten and ranks 17th nationally, averaging 19.8 points per game. He places third in the country in scoring by high-major forwards, trailing only Eric Dixon (23.8, Villanova) and Maxime Raynaud (20.4, Stanford). Martinelli has scored 15+ points in 21 games this season, which is tied for the conference lead and is currently on a career-best streak of scoring 15+ points in nine straight contests. The Glenview, Ill. native has registered six 25+ point games this season, which is the most by a Northwestern forward since John Shurna had six such games in the 2011-12 season. Martinelli has posted five double-doubles this season, with three coming in his last four games.
 
The Wildcats will be without stat sheet stuffer Brooks Barnhizer (foot) for the remainder of the season. After his final game against Rutgers (Jan. 29), he posted season averages of 17.1 points, 8.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 2.3 steals and 1.1 blocks per game. Barnhizer, who played 96 career games for Northwestern, became the first Big Ten player to post career marks of 1,000+ points, 500+ rebounds and 200+ assists in 96 or fewer games since Michael Redd at Ohio State from 1997-2000.
 
Northwestern will also be without graduate student Jalen Leach, who averaged 14.3 points per game, for the remainder of the season. In conference play, he averaged 4.4 assists per game. He scored 15+ points in six of his final seven games and dished out 4+ assists in a career-best streak of eight consecutive games.
 
Graduate student Ty Berry has scored 10+ points in six of his last eight games. He has knocked down 2+ threes in nine Big Ten games, which is tied for the most in the conference. Berry is tied with Drew Crawford (2009-14) for the fifth most made threes in program history with 232.
 
Last time out, Martinelli posted his second consecutive double-double with 23 points, 19 of which came in the second half, 10 rebounds, and three assists as Northwestern suffered a 76-71 setback at Washington on Sunday (Feb. 8) night.
 
Martinelli became the first Northwestern player to put up 23+ points, 10+ rebounds, and 3+ assists in a Big Ten game since Jan. 12, 2022, when Pete Nance dropped 28 points, 14 rebounds, and three assists against Maryland.
 
In his first career start at Northwestern, junior Justin Mullins scored 13 points, converting 3-of-5 three-point attempts in 33 minutes of action. His 13 points are the most by a Northwestern player in their first start as a Wildcat since Barnhizer scored 18 against Binghamton on Nov. 6, 2023. The Oak Park, Ill. native has scored 10+ points in back-to-back games for the first time during his Northwestern tenure. Sophomore Jordan Clayton suited up for the first time this season and elected to forgo his redshirt year and contributed seven points and five assists without a turnover.
 
The Wildcats had seven turnovers and forced the Huskies into 16. Northwestern had nine steals, tied for its second most in Big Ten play this season. The Wildcats shot 11-of-11 from the free throw line, its first time shooting 100% from the line with at least 10 attempts since Nov. 23, 2021, against Georgia when it went 13-of-13.
 
Northwestern trails the all-time series against the Ducks (16-8, 5-8 Big Ten) 2-0, with the Wildcats’ losses coming in 1955 and 1964.
 
Oregon enters the contest having lost its last five games. Jackson Shelstad (12.9 points per game) and Nathan Bittle (12.5) lead the team in scoring. The Ducks rank fifth in the Big Ten in both bench points per game (24.2) and fast break points per game (12.4).
 
The Wildcats return to Welsh-Ryan Arena to take on Nebraska on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 2 p.m. CT. The game will air on Big Ten Network and WGN Radio 720.
