Porsche Penske Motorsport extended its perfect start to the 2025 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship with another one-two finish at Laguna Seca on Sunday, while AO Racing’s pink “Roxy” 911 GT3 R took top honors in the GTD Pro class.

In a caution-free 2-hour, 40-minute showdown beneath clear California skies, Matt Campbell (Australia) and Mathieu Jaminet (France) edged their sister car—driven by Felipe Nasr (Brazil) and Nick Tandy (Great Britain)—by less than two seconds at the finish. The result marks Campbell and Jaminet’s first victory of the year and Porsche Penske’s fourth consecutive overall win, moving them further ahead in the manufacturers’, teams’, and drivers’ standings.

The race began with both 963 prototypes settling into second and third on the grid. Nasr quickly dispatched the field before contact forced the No. 6 car into an early pit stop. From there, the two Porsches traded laps at the front, holding off a late charge from a BMW that ultimately ran wide into the gravel on the final lap. “Challenging moments and close calls made it a tough day,” said Jonathan Diuguid, managing director of Porsche Penske Motorsport. “But our team delivered a flawless performance under pressure.”

In GTD Pro, former Porsche Juniors Laurin Heinrich and Klaus Bachler powered the AO Racing 911 GT3 R “Roxy” to its second win of the season, mirroring last year’s success of its green sister car “Rexy.” Their 8.66-second margin of victory vaulted them atop the GTD Pro driver standings and helped Porsche secure the lead in the class manufacturers’ points.

Customer squad JDC-Miller MotorSports finished ninth in the GTP ranks, while Wright Motorsports placed sixth in GTD after a mid-race penalty. The championship now pauses before heading to the streets of Detroit for round five on May 31.

Key results

  • Overall (GTP): 1st Campbell/Jaminet (Porsche 963), 2nd Nasr/Tandy (Porsche 963), 9th Bruni/van der Helm (Porsche 963)

  • GTD Pro: 1st Heinrich/Bachler (Porsche 911 GT3 R “Roxy”)

  • GTD: 6th Adelson/Skeer (Porsche 911 GT3 R)

Kansas Speedway tends to be one of the more exciting races on the NASCAR schedule, but Kyle Larson did his best to prove otherwise on Sunday, dominating the race from start to finish. It was a very different ending to the Truck race on Saturday, which saw two drivers sliding sideways and hitting the wall in a thrilling battle for the win. But like most weekends in racing, there was one driver very happy and a lot of drivers somewhere between annoyed and irate.

With that being said, let’s take a look at the biggest winners and losers from NASCAR in Kansas:

WINNER: Larson for simply being unstoppable…and getting his pedal car

It’s beginning to look possible that the Wood Brothers Racing group — NASCAR’s oldest team — could win multiple races this season. To put that in perspective haven’t done that in 44 years. Berry crashed while leading at Texas last weekend, but showed up to Kansas with another hot rod. He easily had top-five pace, but a speeding penalty proved costly with just under 100 laps to go. Even still, Berry clawed his way back through the field, finishing sixth in the end. The No. 21 was last in points just one year ago, so this is a huge step forward with Berry behind the wheel.

LOSER: Denny Hamlin after back-to-back DNFs

For the first time in nearly 12 years, Hamlin has recorded back-to-back DNFs. And what makes it frustrating for the veteran driver is that both were outside of his control. Two mechanical issues, defined by a dramatic oil fire at Texas and a misbehaving clutch that broke the transaxle during the final round of pit stops at Kansas. He seemed to be at a loss for words after the latest issue, and who can blame him?

WINNER: Corey Heim leads the way for 23XI

23XI Racing entered four cars into the Cup race at Kansas, placing Truck Series regular Corey Heim in the extra ‘open’ entry. Despite it being just his fourth-ever Cup race, Heim piloted that bright yellow No. 67 very well throughout the day. There was a restart where he pushed up in a four-wide situation, triggering a multi-car wreck. But despite that mistake, he was smooth for most of the day and ended up being the highest-running driver in the entire 23XI fleet. He finished 13th, with Tyler Reddick in 17th being his closest teammate.

LOSER: Chase Elliott’s pit crew and their costly error

Elliott started the final stage in control of the race and set sail, but his time out front didn’t last. During the final pit stop of the race, the jack dropped before the right-rear tire was secured. The slow stop dropped him from the lead, free-falling outside of the top 15. He never recovered, finishing 15th at the end of the day as his winless streak now extends beyond a year.

WINNER: Hocevar/Riggs for not wrecking in the fight for the Truck win

AJ Allmendinger has been doing an impressive job of collecting points for his No. 16 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet this year. He has been consistent and remains within striking distance of the cut-off line for the playoffs. But all of his hard work went up in a plume of white smoke at Kansas, just six laps into the race. The blown engine left him with a single point and he was livid on the radio. Allmendinger can be heard calling out the ECR engines under the hood, and even after unplugging the radio, expletives flew from inside the race car. This also comes one week after an early wreck at Texas, which also left him with a single point. He was averaging about 22 points per week before these latest issues. It’s also his second engine failure of the year, also losing a motor in the Daytona 500.

Jorge Martin pushing for early Aprilia exit

Jorge Martin intends to leave Aprilia at the end of the 2025 MotoGP campaign, invoking a contractual clause that releases him from the second year in 2026 if he is not among the top riders in the world championship standings after the French Grand Prix, Motorsport.com has learned. Jorge Martin intends to leave Aprilia at the end of the 2025 MotoGP campaign, invoking a contractual clause that releases him from the second year in 2026 if he is not among the top riders in the world championship standings after the French Grand Prix, Motorsport.com has learned.

The agreement signed by Aprilia and the reigning world champion last year at the Italian GP currently holds no binding effect for the second season. Motorsport.com understands that in the version accepted by Aprilia, Martin’s representatives included a clause granting him full freedom to accept offers from other teams if he was not among the title contenders after last Sunday’s French GP at Le Mans.

The numerous injuries that have plagued Martin since his championship win – preventing him from participating in five of the six rounds so far this season – have left the Spaniard without a single point, placing him at the bottom of the overall standings.

This scenario, having been almost impossible to foresee when Martin and Aprilia shook hands in early June last year, could trigger an unexpected shake-up in the rider market.

However, Aprilia has no intention of standing by while the centrepiece of its MotoGP project departs without having had the chance to properly compete.

Two pre-season injuries sidelined Martin from the first three rounds in Thailand, Argentina and Austin, and he returned in Qatar, still not fully recovered, only to suffer a serious injury that resulted in nearly two weeks of hospital treatment in Doha due to a pneumothorax. While a return to action date hasn’t been set yet, it seems unlikely he will be fit to return before the German GP, the 11th round, scheduled for 11-13 July.

However, the current contract situation of most riders limits Martin’s potential options. The most logical would be Honda, considering that Luca Marini’s contract with the Japanese team ends this season. But Honda has no intention of making any move until Martin resolves his ongoing conflict with Aprilia and is officially free.

Martin opens negotiations with Aprilia

Motorsport.com has learned that Martin was in Le Mans on Friday, having driven there from his home in Andorra. He kept a low profile and did not visit the circuit to avoid drawing attention, but held several meetings, including one where he informed the Aprilia management of his intention to activate the release clause for 2026.

Unsurprisingly, the news has shocked the leadership at the Noale-based company, which is now considering legal action for breach of contract if Martin leaves.

However, out of respect for Aprilia, Martin is reportedly willing to extend the evaluation period up until the San Marino GP on 12-14 September.

Aprilia believes it has legal grounds to block the rider’s exit, arguing that the clause should not apply due to his injury-related absence, and that there is no obligation to extend the trial period.

Martin has closely followed the performance of other Aprilia riders and feels that the RS-GP is not living up to the expectations set when the manufacturer convinced him to join from Pramac Ducati.

His team-mate Marco Bezzecchi is yet to reach the podium this season, and the top Aprilia rider in the standings is MotoGP rookie Ai Ogura, racing for Trackhouse, who currently sits in 10th place in the riders’ championship.

A look at the winners and losers from Sunday’s Cup race at Kansas Speedway.

WINNERS

Kyle Larson — Had the perfect weekend, scoring a maximum 61 points. He started on the pole, won both stages, earned the bonus point for the fastest lap of the race, led 221 of 267 laps and took the points lead. Larson’s victory was his third of the season, the earliest he has scored three wins in a Cup season.

NASCAR Cup Series AdventHealth 400

Kyle Larson earned his third Cup victory of the season.

Christopher Bell — His runner-up result gives him a top 10 in five of the last six races.

Ryan Blaney — His third-place finish gives him four top fives in the last five races.

Chase Briscoe — He finished fourth. That’s his fourth fourth-place finish in the first 12 races of the season.

John Hunter Nemechek — His 10th-place finish gives him back-to-back top 10s. It also was his fourth top 10 of the season, which ties his career high from last season.

NASCAR Cup Series AdventHealth 400

Here is what drivers had to say after Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway.

LOSERS

Brad Keselowski — Blew a tire while running second and finished 36th. That’s the third time in the last five races he’s placed 30th or worse. Keselowski fell a spot to 33rd in the points after Sunday’s race.

Denny Hamlin — A clutch issue ruined the day for Hamlin, who had a fast car. He finished 36th.

AJ Allmendinger — His blown engine relegated him to last in the 38-car field. It is the second weekend in a row he has finished 36th or worse. He has dropped from 15th to 25th in the points in the past two races.
