Alan Andrew Veen, 80 years old from Clare, ventured into the spirit realms for one last expedition on Tuesday, December 3, 2024.

He was born on a military base in Auckland, New Zealand to Peter and Freda Veen on June 1, 1944, and made his journey to the United States by ship.

Al took great pride in his 4.5 years with the US Marine Corps and his role as the Governor of the District 3 Michigan Bow Hunters Association. He was actively involved in the Clare Rod and Gun Club, Harrison Sportsman Club, the MI Long Bow Association, engaged in various shooting leagues, and had a deep passion for traditional archery. He was a talented marksman, an exceptional instructor, and generously devoted his time to assist others.

He retired from Oakland County in 1994 and relocated to Clare, where he worked for the Clare Co. Road Commission for several years. Al eventually became a driver for the Amish community, which brought him much joy.

Living life to the fullest and embracing the outdoors, Al was well-traveled and had a love for hunting, fishing, and camping. A proficient marksman, he was dedicated to archery. Al easily made friends and was familiar with someone everywhere he went.

He is survived by his girlfriend and adventurous partner, Donna Reed of Sanford; stepdaughter Kenitha Severn of Clare, stepson Mike (Michael) Koontz of Harrison, and stepson Tim (Becky) Koontz of Clare; grandchildren: Christopher Koontz, Julie (Matt) Wilkinson, Jill Severn, Krystal (Luc) Romatz, Kerry (Nic) Romatz; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, along with many family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Wanetta Veen, his parents, and his sister, Frances McCormack.

In accordance with Al’s wishes, cremation has occurred, managed by the Clare Chapel of Stephenson-Wyman Funeral Home. Online condolences can be submitted at www.stephenson-wyman.com.
