BUT FOR NEWCASTLE, THEY’RE LOOKING FOR ANSWERS BECAUSE THEY BELIEVE GUTHRIE BROKE A RULE. I ASKED FOR THEM TO UPHOLD THE RULE THAT IS WRITTEN AND AT THE VERY LEAST, SANCTION GUTHRIE’S HEAD COACH AND FOOTBALL PROGRAM FOR VIOLATING RULE FB 6-B, DASH TWO NEWCASTLE SUPERINTENDENT IS CALLING ON THE OKLAHOMA SECONDARY SPORTS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION TO DO MORE THAN THEY ARE. OVER THE WEEKEND, MANY ACCUSED GUTHRIE OF USING A DIFFERENT SCHOOLS COACH ON THEIR SIDELINES DURING THEIR GAME AGAINST NEWCASTLE. OSSAA AND GUTHRIE RELEASED STATEMENTS ABOUT THIS SUNDAY. OSSAA SAY IT’S A PERSONNEL ISSUE AND NOT SOMETHING FOR THEM TO PURSUE. NEWCASTLE SUPERINTENDENT TODAY IS POINTING TO A SPECIFIC RULE IN THE FOOTBALL HANDBOOK. IT TALKS ABOUT THE END OF FOOTBALL SEASONS FOR SCHOOLS, SCHOOL PERSONNEL AND PLAYERS, AND IN TODAY’S BOARD MEETING, THE OSSAA TOLD WALKER THAT THE INTENTION OF THE RULE WAS FOR PLAYERS, NOT COACHES. THE CONFUSION CAME FROM THE WAY SOME OF THE LANGUAGE IS HOW IT’S WRITTEN IN THE RULE THAT MAKES IT SOUND LIKE THAT ALSO APPLIES TO COACHES. NEWCASTLE SUPERINTENDENT SAYS THE RULE POINTS TO SCHOOL PERSONNEL TOO, AND NOT JUST PLAYERS WITH COACHES NOT BE CONSIDERED SCHOOL PERSONNEL. AND SURE, SURE THEY WOULD. AGAIN, THAT’S WHERE THE THE WAY THE RULE IS WRITTEN CAN BE CAN BE CLEARED UP. TUESDAY NIGHT, NEWCASTLE HAD THEIR MONTHLY SCHOOL BOARD MEETING AND ONE OF THEIR AGENDA ITEMS WAS TO DISCUSS THE GAME. PLUS OSSAA RULES AND REGULATIONS. I HAVE A BUNCH OF SENIORS AND THAT WAS THEIR LAST GAME AND I’M VERY PROUD OF HOW THEY’VE PLAYED. I’M VERY PROUD OF THE SPORTSMANSHIP AND INTEGRITY IN WHICH THEY PLAY THE GAME, AND IT’S MY JOB AS SUPERINTENDENT TO ADVOCATE FOR THEM. WHEN A RULE HAS BEEN BROKEN AND WE FEEL LIKE THAT RULE WAS BROKEN. NOW THE USSR DENIED NEWCASTLE APPEAL TO APPEAL TODAY INSIDE THAT MEETING. AND THEY DID TELL ME THAT THEY’RE ACTUALLY GOING TO CLEAN UP THAT RULE TO SAY WHAT WAS INTENDED, WHICH IS JUST PLAYERS. NOW, I ALSO REACHED OUT TO GUTHRIE FOR COMMENT BECAUSE THEY WERE IN ATTENDANCE OF THAT APPEAL, AND THEY SAY THEY LOOK FORWARD TO THEIR SATURDAY NIGHT GAME AGAIN

You’ve probably heard about the fight over possible rule violations at Guthrie vs. Newcastle, which was a crucial game with a ticket to the state championship game.

For Guthrie, they’re heading to the 5A championship game and for Newcastle, they’re searching for answers because they think Guthrie broke a rule.

“I asked for them to uphold the rule that was written and, at the very least, sanction Guthrie’s head coach and football program for violating the rule FB6-B-2,” said Dr. Cathy Walker, superintendent for Newcastle Public Schools.

Walker is calling on the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association to do more than they are.

Over the weekend, many accused Guthrie of using a different school coach on their sidelines during their game against Newcastle.

OSSAA and Guthrie released statements on Sunday with OSSAA saying it’s a personnel issue and not something they would pursue.

Walker, on Wednesday, is pointing to a specific rule in the football handbook:

“The football season for member schools, school personnel, and players shall close on Saturday of week eighteen on the OSSAA calendar, except for those teams having elimination games following week eighteen, whose season shall close with their last elimination game. An individual who has represented his/her school during the current season shall not participate in football unattached or as a member of a team for the remainder of the school year.”

In Wednesday’s board meeting, OSSAA officials told Walker that the intention of the rule was for players, not coaches.

“The confusion came from the way some of the language is, how it’s written, and the rule that makes it sound like that also applies to coaches,” said David Jackson, executive director for OSSAA.

Walker said the rule also points to school personnel, too, and not just players.

When asked if coaches would be considered school personnel, Jackson said they would.

“Sure, it would. Again, that’s where the way the rule was written could be cleared up,” he said.

On Tuesday, Newcastle had their monthly school board meeting and one of their agenda items was to discuss the game, plus OSSAA rules and regulations.

“I have a bunch of seniors, and that was their last game. I’m very proud of how they played, I’m very proud of the sportsmanship and integrity in which they played the game. It is my job as Superintendent to advocate for them when a rule has been broken, and we feel like that rule has been broken,” Walker said.

OSSAA officials said they’re going to probably clean up that rule to say that what is intended, which is just players.

KOCO 5 reached out to Guthrie Public Schools. Officials were at Newcastle’s appeal, and they said they’re looking forward to their Saturday night game against Carl Albert.
