OPINION —
The Alabama High School Athletic Association completed the Super 7 football champion-ship and flag football championships last week at Protective Stadium in Birmingham. This year’s event began with two flag football championship games, followed by seven football championship games. The event drew more than 41,000 fans over the three-day event: Wednesday (attendance 11,722), Thursday (attendance 13,177) and Friday (attendance 16,425 fans).
Locally, the Lady Red Devils of Central High School-Phenix City (19-0) dominated Spain Park by a score of 55-17 to win their second straight flag football championship. CHS earned the No. 1 ranking in USA Today’s Flag Football Poll after winning the state title.
Reeltown (14-1), led by coach Matt Johnson, thrashed Tuscaloosa Academy 49-13 to win the 2A State Championship. Congrats to Harrson Renfroe for leading the Rebel defense!

The AHSAA is in the process of finding new places to host the Super 7, after Alabama and Auburn paused their contracts due to the new CFP playoff format. AHSAA Executive Director Heath Harmon joined “On the Mark” radio show Thursday morning while broadcasting live from the AHSAA host hotel, Sheraton Civic Center next to Protective Stadium. Harmon started by thanking those involved in Super 7 in the past.
Without giving specific answers, it appears Birmingham will stay in the rotation while the AHSAA decides between South Alabama Stadium and Montgomery’s ASU Stadium. Troy and Jacksonville State are outside possibilities. It is worth noting that Birmingham is under contract to host at least two more Super 7s through 2032 with options to host more. I look for the announcement prior to the start of Spring Sports, probably sooner.
