(Photo courtesy of DLNR)On Wednesday, a DAR dive team assessed the area for any damage to the coral reef and met with the marine surveyors and a potential salvage operator. Once the vessel is removed, DAR will conduct another damage assessment.
However, Kapalua Kai Sailing, Inc., is struggling to hire a salvage operator after several companies said they are not available or are not willing to take on the project.
The owner of the vessel hired two marine surveyors to inspect the Hula Girl and reported to DLNR that the physical condition and grounding location of the sailboat is unchanged.
The Hula Girl was cordoned off by yellow safety tape and no trespassing signs after four people were caught onboard. The vessel’s owner is now asking its insurance provider to hire a security guard to stand watch during the day to discourage others from getting on the boat.
The owner of the sailing vessel Hula Girl, which ran aground on Maui last Thursday, is working with state agencies to free the boat, according to a DLNR news release.

(Photo courtesy of DLNR)DLNR Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation and the DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources already approved a salvage plan submitted by Kapalua Kai Sailing, Inc., to remove the vessel from the Honolua-Mokulē‘ia Marine Life Conservation District by Feb. 17.
