The Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets are advancing to the quarterfinals (Elite Eight) of the 2024-2025 GHSA Division 1 State Flag Football Championship Playoffs. On Thursday, December 5, the Jackets competed against the Wheeler County Bulldogs and the Miller Grove Wolverines. In round one, the Jackets triumphed over the Bulldogs with a score of 27-6, and then they secured a 34-0 victory against the Wolverines in round two.
This past season has been quite a journey for the Jackets, who wrapped up the 2024 season with an impressive record of 15-1, going undefeated at 6-0 in their region, earning the title of Division One Area Four Region Champions. Head coach Marci Cochran is eager for her squad to commence their quest for a fourth consecutive state title.
“Sending the seniors out with four rings would create an incredible feeling,” Cochran remarked.
The Jackets entered this playoff season boasting a stellar record of 77-1, with their only loss occurring in the last regular season game against Calvary Day, ending in 7-0. That marked the first defeat in the program’s history, which began during the 2021-2022 season.
Nonetheless, coach Cochran expressed satisfaction with her team’s recovery following that loss as they claimed victory in their latest two matches.
“We needed to engage in some mental recovery after the loss and move beyond that game,” Cochran stated.
And they indeed did as junior rusher Paige Nelson shone on the field by scoring all four touchdowns, pulling six flags, and achieving one sack against Wheeler County.
As they gear up for their quest for a fourth consecutive state championship, the Jackets are concentrating on one game at a time. With these two postseason victories, they sit at 2-0, aiming to reach 5-0 and become state champions by December 16 at the Mercedes Benz Stadium.
The Jackets will return to play on Monday, December 9, 2024, against the Harris County Tigers at 5 pm in the third round of the state tournament. If victorious over the Tigers, the Jackets will face the winner of the Dodge County and Westside Macon matchup for a spot in the final four on Thursday, December 12.
