BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – For the third straight week, Tennessee had a player recognized by the Southeastern Conference in its weekly awards as Marcus Phillips was tabbed the SEC Co-Pitcher of the Week on Monday afternoon.Phillips joins Liam Doyle as Tennessee pitchers to earn weekly honors from the conference after Doyle did so last Monday following a 13-strikeout performance in a combined no-hitter against St. Bonaventure. The junior righthander continued his impressive string of early-season outings with his best start to date, tossing a seven-inning complete-game shutout on Saturday afternoon to help the Vols clinch their series against No. 6/7 Florida on SEC Opening Weekend.Levi Clark was named SEC Freshman of the Week last Monday, as well, while Gavin Kilen was named the SEC Player of the Week on March 3 after earning MVP honors at the Astros Foundation College Classic in Houston.Making his first-career SEC start, Phillips struck out seven, scattered five hits and issued just one walk in a career-high seven innings pitched, topping his previous career-best of 5.2 innings. The South Dakota native’s complete-game shutout was the first by a UT pitcher since Drew Beam had one in a win at Vanderbilt on April 3, 2022. Tennessee hosts in-state foe ETSU on Tuesday evening before hitting the road to take on No. 12 Alabama for a Thursday-Saturday series in Tuscaloosa.
