May 12—Down on the farm is a recurring notebook highlighting the past week of baseball throughout the Pirates minor league system. Below are the most notable takeaways from each of the club’s four minor league teams:
Top story: Bubba Chandler named No. 2 prospect in baseball
This week, in MLB Pipeline’s updated list of the top 100 prospects in baseball, Bubba Chandler received a sizable jump in the rankings, going from No. 14 to No. 2. He is the first Pirates prospect to rank within the top five since Paul Skenes did so last year.
A 22-year-old right-hander, Chandler has been strong this season with Triple-A Indianapolis, going 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA over seven starts. Opposing batters are hitting just .160 against him in his 28 innings of work this year. However, Chandler’s most recent outing was one to forget, surrendering three runs, all earned, on five hits and four walks over 2 2/3 innings Wednesday.
Joining Chandler on the top 100 list are Konnor Griffin (37), Thomas Harrington (84), Termarr Johnson (87) and Hunter Barco (93).

The Grasshoppers’ 23-10 record is the second-best record in all of High-A. They also lead High-A with 40 home runs on the season.
