(SAN RAFAEL, Calif.) The three-time reigning PacWest champions Point Loma kicked off their pursuit of a fourth consecutive title on Thursday night, achieving a 69-56 victory on the road against Dominican.

Point Loma effectively held Dominican without a 3-point basket, restricting the Penguins to their lowest scoring game of the season. The 56 points given up by the Sea Lions represent their fewest allowed in a match since they permitted 55 against Hawai’i Pacific on Feb. 17.

A 9-0 run by PLNU in the first half, concluded by Pierce Davis’ layup, shifted a 7-9 deficit into a 16-9 lead for the visitors.

Tyce Paulsen’s 3-pointer then put PLNU ahead by ten or more before Point Loma took a seven-point lead into halftime.

The Penguins managed to narrow the gap to two in the second half before the Sea Lions surged ahead with another 9-0 run.

A pair of free throws from Luke Haupt increased PLNU’s margin to a game-high 16 points with 1:45 remaining, as Haupt capped his leading 15-point performance.

Haupt was the sole Sea Lion to score in double digits, yet nine different PLNU players contributed to a balanced offensive display, with Point Loma outscoring Dominican 29-6 in bench points.

PLNU successfully made its initial 18 free throw attempts, with its only miss occurring with 30 seconds left in the game on their final shot.

Point Loma (8-2 overall, 1-0 PacWest) will wrap up its Bay Area trip with an away game at Academy of Art on Saturday, featuring a rematch of the two teams that shared the conference title last season.

Tip-off in San Francisco is set for 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
