BURLINGTON, Iowa — Update:

Burlington Police obtained an arrest warrant for Urban Morris of Burlington on the following charges: assault (serious misdemeanor), assault (simple misdemeanor), disorderly conduct, and two counts of first-degree harassment.

A criminal complaint filed in the case states that Morris was upset with a call made by a referee that he disagreed with.

The affidavit states the following:
Officers learned while en route the suspect had fled the area. Officers arrived on scene and were approached by witnesses stating the suspect was Urban Morris. Officers were then able to speak with both Victim 1 and Victim 2. Officers first spoke with Victim 1 and learned that he was the referee in the basketball game. At the end of the game a call was made at which point Morris disagreed with the call. Victim 1 stated that Morris approached him as well as Victim 2 and was upset about the call that was made. Victim 1 stated that Morris threatened both Victims by stating he was going to “kill” both Victims and then “find their families”. 

Victim 1 then traveled to the locker room area which parents/spectators are not permitted to go in. Victim 1 stated he was going into the locker room to attempt to retrieve his phone to call 911. Victim 1 then stated that he turned around and was punched in the nose by Morris who had followed him into the locker room. Victim 1 stated he was struck with a closed fist at which point he fell over a bench and Morris repeatedly struck Victim 1 approximately 7 or 8 times before Morris left the area. Victim 1 had visible swelling around his nose/eye region. 

Officers then spoke with Victim 2. Victim 2 stated that he was also a referee in the game at which point the call was made and Morris became upset. Victim 2 stated that he did have his phone on his person at which point he removed his phone to call 911 at which point Morris stated “Call the Police” and “I will kill you” and stated he was going to “find his family”. Victim 2 stated he was in fear that Morris was going to harm his (family) due to the comments that were made. 

Morris turned himself into the Des Moines County Jail and was booked on the charges on Tuesday, Dec. 17. There is a preliminary hearing set for Dec. 27.

The Burlington Police Department said charges are expected after a parent reportedly assaulted a referee following a basketball game.

According to a Facebook post, police responded to Edward Stone Middle School around 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13 regarding the assault. Burlington Police confirmed the game was a freshman/junior varsity game that was taking place at the middle school.

Officials have identified the parent and criminal charges are expected. Further details will be released by the Burlington Police Department once an arrest has been made.

Editor’s note: News 8 previously reported that the assault took place after a middle school basketball game. Burlington Police confirmed it was a high school-level game being held at the middle school that night.
