Track and field District 6 2A

At West Valley HS. Hayden Anderson (East Valley) won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.72 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 46.02, both PRs. Anderson was also the lead-off runner on the winning 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams.

EV’s Talan Hughes won the 100 with a PR of 10.93, 110 hurdles (PR of 14.52) and the 300 hurdles (38.19).

WV’s Hadassah Duff won the 1,600 in 5:22.96 and the 3,200 in a PR of 11:53.66.

Pullman’s Chris Druffel and Luke Genz finished first and second in the pole vault at 13 feet, 2 inches, a PR for both.

Pullman’s Maile Sandberg won the girls pole vault at 10-3.

Kiera Smith of Rogers won the 100 (12.86) and took third place in the 200 (26.08). She was also part of the first-place 4×200 relay team and second-place 4×100 relay team.

Deer Park’s Mattison Wainwright had a PR of 5-2 to win the high jump and threw the javelin 90-6 for sixth.

Clarkston’s Milo Kunnap won the long jump with a PR of 21-31/2. Kunnap was the lead-off runner in the second-place 4×100 relay. He also took third in the 200 (22.68) and sixth in the 100 (11.47). Teammate Ryken Craber won the triple jump with a PR of 43-31/2 and took second place at 20-10 in the long jump.

District 6 1A

At Colville HS. Lakeside’s Jeff Winger won the javelin with a PR of 198-7. Winger took third in the 100 in 11.27 and he was the lead-off runner in the winning 4×100 relay.

Colville’s Isaiah Ortiz won the triple jump with a PR of 42-4.

Garrett Montney and Dakotah Phillips of Medical Lake finished first and second in the pole vault at 13-0.

Riverside’s Athena Jones won the shot put with a PR of 37-1/4. Jones was also the anchor on the second-place 4×100 relay team.

District 6 1B

At Valley Christian HS. Westin Madden of Valley Christian won the boys 1,600 in 4:27.05. Teammate Joseph Steinbach won the discus at 154-10.

Brady Roberts of Almira/Coulee-Hartline won the triple jump with a PR of 42-11/2. Brody Fleming of St. John-Endicott-LaCrosse won the javelin at 156-9.

Valley Christian’s Melissa Wagner won the 1,600 with a PR of 5:30.55.

Odessa’s Lily Starkel won the high jump at 5-0 and placed sixth in the long jump (15-41/2). Kyra Brantner of Garfield-Palouse won the long jump at 17-21/2.

Chloe Waddell of St. John-Endicott won the shot put at 33-111/4.

Oakesdale won the 4×200 in 1:52.88.

UF baseball signee Cooper Moss named finalist for Florida's Mr. Baseball

Arnold High School’s Cooper Moss wins Florida’s Class 4A Player of the Year in baseball.
Moss, a Florida signee, had a 0.63 ERA, 141 strikeouts, and hit .390 with 23 RBIs this season.
Over his high school career, he achieved 389 strikeouts and 20 home runs, a first for Bay County.
He’s a finalist for the overall Mr. Baseball award, to be announced June 9.

After a dominant senior season, Arnold’s Cooper Moss has been named the Class 4A Florida Dairy Farmers Player of the Year. The award is selected by a statewide panel of high school baseball coaches and media members.

Moss becomes the second consecutive Bay County pitcher to earn the honor, following Bozeman’s Trey Power in 2024.

The Florida signee posted a 7-2 record with a 0.63 ERA and racked up 141 strikeouts over 78 innings pitched. At the plate, he hit .390 with 39 hits, 23 runs, 23 RBIs and three home runs.

Over four varsity seasons at Arnold, Moss compiled a 23-8 record and a 1.28 ERA, finishing with 389 strikeouts. Offensively, he tallied 121 hits, 81 runs, 103 RBIs and 20 home runs. He is the first player in Bay County baseball history to record both 300 strikeouts and 20 home runs in a career.Moss as the top vote-getter in Class 4A is one of eigh finalists for the 2025 Florida Dairy Farmers Mr. Baseball award, which will be announced Monday, June 9.Need a break? Titans Win Defensive Battle; Advance to Baseball Regional Final

(6-5-2025, 11:40PM): Despite only two hits for Lumen Christi, they survived a defensive battle on Thursday to advance to the Regional Final at Spring Arbor University.

Each team closed the first inning with one hit. Lumen Christi’s Benny Gaston hit a grounder over 2nd base. Leslie’s Jackson Fossitt had a single, and was rounding first, as the 1st baseman was overthrown after a runner was out at 2nd. The Titans’ quick recovery created a more complex version of the double play tagging the runner out.

Lumen started off the scoring top of the 2nd as Timmy Crowley hit a runner home as he was thrown out at first to take the early 1-0 advantage.

In the 3rd inning Lumen Christi kept their momentum going with Jack Fitzpatrick hitting a ground ball by the 3rd baseman for a single. The lead grew to 2-0 as Broderick Gregory hit Fitzpatrick home and got to 2nd via errors. Gregory stole 3rd and eventually home with the catcher distracted for the 3-0 advantage.

Only a combined 2 more hits were to come. Bottom of the 4th, Leslie’s Henry Bradford recorded a double with a deep shot to right field. Atop the 5th, Lumen Christi’s Fitzpatrick got to first on an error. Bottom of the 5th, Leslie’s Parker Franklin got a single, hitting the ball to 2nd base.

Lumen Christi took the win 3-0 over Leslie with stifling defense.

Lumen Christi played 4 different pitchers combining for 3 hits allowed and no runs. Wesley Learned started for the Titans and pitched the first 3 innings. Learned allowed no hits and earned the pitching win. Jack Fitzpatrick led the offense with two hits.

Jackson Fossitt pitched the entirety of the game for the Blackhawks allowing only 3 hits. Leslie had just two hits.

Lumen Christi will play the Onsted Wildcats Saturday at Adrian College at 10am, the winner will play at 3pm in the state quarterfinal.

(6-5-2025, 11:00PM): In a regular season rematch from April, Mason dominated Parma Western on Thursday night at Spring Arbor University to advance to the Regional Final.

The Bulldogs struck early with Maddox Armour’s double to left-center field and was sent home through a sac fly by Colten McCaleb to take a 1-0 lead. Johnny Bolton sent a line drive to center field for an RBI to take the 2-0 advantage.

The Panthers found their way onto the scoreboard in the 2nd via Jackson Luke hitting a ball to the track in center field for a double and Luke Herrington hitting him home on a pop fly.

The rest of the way was all Mason. 2 RBIs in the 3rd by McCaleb and Ryan Myers to extend the lead, 4-1. 3 more singles for RBIs by Joey Schild, Johnny Bolton, and Carson Chapin made it a 7-1 Bulldog lead.

The Bulldogs didn’t let up in the seventh as McCaleb hit a 3-RBI double with the bases loaded. Davis closed out the scoring for the game with a RBI single to make the final score 14 to 1, Mason defeating Parma Western.

McCaleb drove in six runs including his 3-RBI double to lead Mason. Travis Davis batted 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs for the Bulldogs. Jackson Luke led Western with two hits, WHS finished the season 18-15-1 with a district championship.

Mason will take on Williamston at the University of Michigan on Saturday with the winner playing in the state quarterfinal.

We are officially into the quarterfinals of every MIAA spring tournament, so it’s a good time to take stock of where thing stand.

The lowest seeds still dancing are both in the Division 1 boys’ volleyball tournament: No. 27 Taunton and No. 26 Barnstable. The only other seed remaining in the 20s is No. 21 Bishop Fenwick girls’ tennis.

Most brackets have gone to chalk — more evidence of the effectiveness of the power rankings formula — with no seed lower than 10 remaining in softball, nobody worse than No. 11 Ursuline left in girls’ lacrosse, and No. 11 Shawsheen representing the worst seed still going in boys’ lacrosse.

But in baseball there’s been plenty of upheaval, as eight double-digit seeds made the quarterfinals (13 double-digit seeds made the quarterfinals in all other sports combined) and two No. 1 seeds (Taunton and St. Mary’s) have already fallen. No. 17 Natick and No. 16 Apponequet are still alive, as are 14 seeds Milford and Chelmsford, 13-seed Wakefield, 12-seed Franklin and two 11 seeds: Dennis-Yarmouth and Mount Everett.

Gasper weighing in on the ICE detainment of a Milford boys’ volleyball player to the first day of the Meet of Champions to Bishop Feehan softball’s first trip to the Division 1 semifinals to a new venue for the MIAA indoor track championships, we had it all covered Thursday.

2. Three stars

Edy Latour, Dighton-Rehoboth — The sophomore lefthander pitched a two-hitter, allowing just one run with seven strikeouts, but it was her hitting that drew the headlines, going 4 for 4 with two doubles and four RBIs in a 13-1 Division 3 second-round win over Medway.

Criss Luna, Charlestown — The junior not only started the game for the Townies on the mound and delivered a game-tying two-run single in the third, but seven innings later he produced a walkoff home run over the fence in left field in the bottom of the 11th, giving the Townies a 3-2 Division 5 second-round win over Bromfield. Next up, City rival English Saturday night.

Liam Williams, Westwood — The junior middie netted his second goal of the game with five seconds remaining to lift the Wolverines’ boys’ lacrosse team into the Division 2 quarterfinals.

3. Going, going, gone

No home run was more important Wednesday than Natalia Leach’s, which stood as the only run in Foxborough’s 1-0 win over St. Mary’s in the second round of the Division 3 softball tournament. Milford’s Joe Butler and Ian Carter both cranked two-run shots in No. 14 Milford’s 9-7 upset of No. 3 North Attleborough in the second round of the D2 baseball bracket. Also homering were Dighton-Rehoboth’s Emma Horrocks, Attleboro’s Lola Ronayne and Medway’s Olivia Klaus.

6. Coaching corner

Looking to boost its boys’ basketball program, St. John’s Prep announced the hiring of Corey Lowe to replace David Clay, who stepped down earlier this year for personal reasons.

Lowe coached Newton South the last two years, flipping a 7-13 record to 16-4 in his second season, when he was named Dual County League Coach of the Year. Previously, he led the Bradford Christian Academy girls to a 20-3 record.

“I am blessed to be able to be the next leader of the Eagles program,” said Lowe in a statement. “I will put a lot of focus into the development of all players from our middle school up to the varsity team. Sharpening skills that will allow us to play fast, spaced, and aggressive.”

Lowe, a 2006 Newton North graduate, played four seasons at Boston University and is still the program’s all-time leader in minutes and 3-pointers. He played internationally in Latvia, Israel, and Brazil before injuries ended his playing career.

Lowe takes over an Eagles program that went 2-18 last season and hasn’t made the playoffs since 2019.

“I’m excited to get working with Corey,” Eagles AD Jameson Pelkey said in a statement. ”He has an outstanding background as a player achieving success at the highest levels in high school, college, and professionally.”

Haverhill’s Jordy Oriach has committed to play baseball at Georgia after a breakout season at New Mexico. The 6-foot-5-inch outfielder and 2022 Hillies graduate spent two seasons at Frank Phillips College before hitting .388 with 16 homers and 63 RBIs last season with the Lobos.

Harvard men’s basketball announced its incoming class, which includes Worcester Academy graduate Ryan Sullivan of Auburn. A NEPSAC AA All-League selection, the 6-foot-9-inch, 205-pound forward helped Worcester win three league titles. A four-year varsity baseball player, Sullivan also plays AAU for BABC.

8. Upcoming events

The Mass HS Volleyball All-Star game events will begin at 10 a.m. on June 14 at SLAM Volleyball in Marlborough.

The Boston City League All-Star baseball game will be played Monday at 3:30 p.m. Rosters are expected to be announced Friday.

The 47th annual Shriners All-Star Football Classic will be held June 13 at 7 p.m. at Hormel Stadium in Medford.

The girls’ flag football championship tournament will be held June 12 at Boston College.

The ISL Underclassmen All-Star game will be held at Boston College on Monday.

A video of a man being arrested by ICE at Early Bird in West Omaha has raised alarm among local residents, prompting discussions about immigrant rights and the complexities of the naturalization process.
The arrested individual, 26-year-old Romeo Yaxcal-Tiul, was reportedly undocumented and had prior immigration issues.
Legal expert Roxana Cortes-Mills emphasized that the immigration process has become increasingly lengthy, and individuals facing such arrests should know their rights and consult an attorney before signing any documents.

Video of a man being arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at Early Bird in West Omaha has shocked many in the neighborhood. KMTV spoke to a neighbor who witnessed the arrest and an immigration attorney about what might happen next.

‘Who’s next?’: ICE arrest at Early Bird in Omaha raises community concerns and highlights immigrant rights

Video footage shared with KMTV shows a man being handcuffed on the ground and escorted out of Early Bird. The arrest took place Sunday morning.

Reporter Hannah McIlree sat down with the patron who recorded the video of the arrest. He requested anonymity due to his status as a business owner.

“What inspired you in that moment to say, ‘hey, I need to get this one video?'” McIlree asked.

“I don’t know if it was the minority part of me that felt compelled to be a little bit more vocal, ’cause it is a fear of mine,” he said. “What group is next?”

Witnessing the arrest affected him deeply. His parents immigrated from Taiwan to America in hopes of providing a better life for him and his siblings. He noted the difficulty of the naturalization process.

“It is a very tough process, and over the years, it’s taken longer and longer for people to do it the right way,” he said. “I agree it has to be done the right way, but there has to be a better path for them to do it.”

ICE officials said that agents observed an individual matching the description of a Guatemalan national with a final order of removal in Omaha.

According to ICE, they attempted to contact the subject, who then fled into the restaurant. That’s where they arrested 26-year-old Romeo Yaxcal Tiul, who has no legal status in the United States and was allegedly found working under a fraudulent name and Social Security number, with a prior immigration encounter in 2022 involving false documents.

McIlree spoke with Roxana Cortes-Mills, Legal Director at the Center for Immigrant and Refugee Advancement. She stated that immigration processes have become increasingly lengthy due to limited visa availability, high demand, and a significant backlog of individuals awaiting court hearings.

“The process is getting a lot longer than it has ever been, whether you are pursuing immigration relief through consular processing and waiting for an interview abroad, or going through the process here in the U.S.,” Cortes-Mills said.

ICE agents were originally looking for Yaxcal-Tiul’s brother. Cortes-Mills explained that this fact complicates the arrest. She noted that ICE performs two types of arrests: one with a warrant and one without. Since they were searching for Yaxcal-Tiul’s brother, this arrest would fall under the second category.

“Our statute says that they have to have reason to believe that the person was undocumented,” she said. “They also have to have reason to believe that if the arrest is not conducted in the moment, there is a high likelihood that the individual will leave as a flight risk,” Cortes-Mills said.

KMTV asked Cortes-Mills if she thinks these arrests are going to become more common in Omaha.

“The [Trump] administration has been very clear about their desire to target individuals and one thing that we have seen throughout the the this the 1st 6 months of the administration is that they have really leaned on the the fear mongering or the making an example of individuals and so I do think that those public violent inhumane arrests are things that the administration is using to potentially deter individuals but but truly it’s having an insane very very detrimental effect on our communities,” Cortes-Mills said.

Cortes-Mills advised individuals facing immigration-related arrests to be aware of their constitutional rights and to consult an immigration attorney before signing any documents.

Yaxcal-Tiul was found to be in violation of U.S. immigration and criminal law and is being held in the Pottawatomie County jail.
