Propeck Shines as Cavaliers Advance to Match Play at NCAA Championships

CARLSBAD, Calif. — The No. 10 Virginia women’s golf team secured the final match play spot at the NCAA Women’s Golf Championships with a 72-hole score of 15-over 1167, advancing for the first time since 2016. Megan Propeck led the Cavaliers with a fifth-place finish to mark the second-best individual performance at the NCAA Championships in program history on Monday (May 19) at the Omni LaCosta Resort.

The Cavaliers will face top-ranked Stanford in Tuesday’s quarterfinal round of match play (May 20) starting at 9:50 a.m. eastern time. The Cardinal won the tournament at 27-under 1125. The winner of that match will advance to the semifinals which will be contested on Tuesday afternoon. The match play final is scheduled for Wednesday (May 21).

Propeck matched her best round of the tournament posting a bogey-free round of 3-under 69 which ranks as the fourth lowest round by a Cavalier at the NCAA Championships. She finished the tournament tied for fifth at 6-under 282. The only Cavalier to record a better finish at the NCAA Championships is Leah Wagner who finished as the runner-up in 2005.

Amanda Sambach turned up in the clutch for the Cavaliers sinking a crucial birdie on the eighth hole. That birdie would prove to be the difference in her team advancing to match play as Virginia edged Arizona State by a single stroke.

Sambach carded 1-over 73 and finished 30th overall at 3-over 291. Freshman Kennedy Swedick saved her best for last posting even-par 72. She finished in a tie for 54th place at 10-over 298 along with teammate Jaclyn LaHa who carded 5-over 77 on the day.

Virginia’s 72-hole total (15-over 1167) marked its second best four-round total at the NCAA Championships. The only time UVA has recorded a better score at the NCAA Championships was in 2016 — the only time Virginia has advanced to match play since its introduction in 2015. The Cavaliers fell to Washington in the quarterfinals that season.

Virginia is making its 15th NCAA Championships appearance in the 22-year history of the program. UVA’s best finishes at the NCAAs were back-to-back fourth-place showings in 2011 and 2012.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – The Rocket City Moonshot Youth Water Polo Tournament returned at the Huntsville Aquatics Center on Saturday, featuring 18-and-under boys and girls divisions.

The tournament was hosted by the Huntsville Water Polo Association alongside the Huntsville Sports Commission and City of Huntsville Parks and Recreation.

The event offered free spectator admission, fast-paced competition, and community spirit.

John Hovsepian, who is a player in the tournament on the Kraken Water Polo Club team from Marietta, Georgia, said this is his third time competing in a youth water polo tournament, and he loves it, especially when his team gets to travel to play in places like Huntsville.

“This is my third time doing this tournament. I think we’ve done it the last two years in a row, and every single time it has been a fun tournament, and of course, I really like this pool. It’s a very interesting pool with all the windows, it’s very nice,” Hovsepian said.

As one of the fastest-growing sports in the U.S., the youth water polo tournament highlights youth development and competitive excellence.

The District 2 championship boys’ volleyball teams were eliminated from the PIAA playoffs in the quarterfinals Saturday afternoon at Exeter Township High School.

Holy Redeemer’s outstanding season ended with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-21) loss to York Suburban in the PIAA Class 2A playoffs.

Abington Heights finished its historic season with a 3-0 (25-9, 25-14, 25-18) loss to District 3 champion Cumberland Valley in the PIAA Class 3A quarterfinals in the second match of the doubleheader.

In the Class 2A opener, York Suburban, the runner-up from District 3, advanced to the semifinals and a rematch with District 3 champion Manheim Central, which defeated Dock Mennonite, 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-12) in Tuesday’s semifinal.

The Royals, who won the program’s first District 2 Class 2A championship since 2021, finished the season with a 20-1 record.

Josh Rocha led Holy Redeemer with 29 kills, six service points, and two digs. Rocha finished the season with 956 kills and 125 digs.

Setter Jack Wasiakowski contributed 37 assists to push his season total to 950 for the Royals during the run to a second straight state quarterfinal.

Max Mohutsky had six digs and four kills, Korey Tang had five kills and two blocks, and Brandon DelBalso had three kills and two blocks for Holy Redeemer.

In the Class 3A match, Cumberland Valley (20-0), the No. 1 team in the Class 3A poll by the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association, advanced to Tuesday’s semifinals against Governor Mifflin, the third-place team from District 3.

Abington Heights, which won the District 2 Class 3A championship and earned the first state playoff win in program history Wednesday against Bethlehem Freedom, ends with a 16-5 overall record.

The Comets’ frontline of Shawn Theodore and Shane Brower led the attack. Each had five kills, while Theodore added two blocks and Brower had one.

Theodore finished the season with 243 kills, and Brower had 180.

Chris Cummins led the defensive effort by the Comets with 13 digs.

Ryan Horutz, a sophomore setter, ran the offense and had 18 assists to give him 591 this season.
