Prosper Walnut Grove captures first boys soccer state title in extra

GEORGETOWN — Quinn Shelton slapped his head a few times and walked toward the Walnut Grove bench while getting shoulder taps from his teammates.

Moments before, the junior’s back-to-back close-range reflex saves extended Walnut Grove’s unbeaten season into overtime on Friday evening.

There, a freshman, Wheeler Clayton, became the hero – and earned match MVP honors – for a senior-laden Walnut Grove squad when his long-range shot struck the top-right corner of the net.

“Very choppy game, all over the place, at no point did I think any team was going to win it,” Shelton said. “I was mentally ready for pens.”

The Wildcats composed themselves after relinquishing the lead twice throughout the game to complete their unbeaten season and earn the program’s first boy’s soccer state championship in their second year of existence. They edged past Southwest (25-2-0) in a battle of two first-time state finalists, 3-2, on Friday evening at Georgetown’s Birkelbach Field.

“This means everything,” Shelton said. “It’s a banner on the wall, it’s pride for the rest of the year. We’re just happy to squeeze it out.”

After coasting through the rest of the postseason allowing just three total goals in five matches, Shelton called Southwest the Wildcats’ toughest opponent.

Shelton finished with seven stops, including three in the final two minutes of regulation and another diving stop at the start of overtime.

“Very technical, strong, fast team,” Shelton said.

The Wildcats captured the lead 78 seconds into the game. Mason Kutch slotted a penalty shot into the bottom right corner, sending the keeper the wrong way, and blew kisses to the crowd as his teammates celebrated with him at the corner flag.

In the 25th minute, the Dragons regained the tie when Alfredo Plascencia’s powerful cross across the six-yard box deflected off a Walnut Grove defender for an own goal.

Two whistles prevented a potential Wildcats lead at halftime. Ben Joyner thought he’d given Walnut Grove a 2-1 edge after a failed clearance from a free kick was pumped back into the box and fell to his feet. He ran to the sideline to celebrate, but just before he reached the boundary, the linesman signaled offside and ruled out the goal. Soon after, a whistle seconds before the halftime horn prevented another Wildcats chance from developing.

Walnut Grove regrouped after the break to snatch back the lead in the 49th minute. It was the Wildcats’ turn to benefit from an own goal. Senior Christian Nardelli cut in from the left wing, like Plascencia did earlier, and rang in a low cross redirected into the net by a defender.

The Southwest answer arrived a little under 15 minutes later. Barajas, who’d scuffed a scoring chance in the first half, curled his free kick toward the bottom left corner, and the ball slipped through Shelton’s fingertips to balance the scoresheet once more.

From there, Shelton stayed perfect. He stopped a powerful low effort from Ezra Scott, then robbed Cesar Angel in-close twice in the dying seconds of regulation. He parried away another shot destined for the top right corner early in overtime.

Clayton found the winner in the 98th minute, less than two minutes before a penalty shootout. The freshman said he began the year on JV, being moved up with around six games to play in the regular season, and he’s still enrolled in the JV period, meaning he doesn’t practice with the rest of the varsity squad during the school day.

Clayton’s teammates see him “at games, that’s it,” Shelton explained. But he’s performed as an impact sub. His state championship winning goal was his third of the postseason.

“I saw two people, and I knew I was going to beat them on speed,” Clayton said about what he saw on his goal. “I cut back, froze them and just had to pound it in. I need to show coaches that I deserve to be up there, and I’m going to be ready for the next three years.”

It wasn’t a good day to be a school record, as several fell during Tuesday’s action. We also catch up with tons of college and coaching news from over the weekend, plus a few significant milestones from Monday.

Before we dive in, take a moment to peruse all the scores and recaps: Scoreboard | Baseball | Softball | Boys’ lacrosse | Girls’ lacrosse | Boys’ volleyball | Girls’ tennis | Boys’ tennis

1. Milestones and moments

Methuen senior captain Kiera Fitzpatrick blew past the school’s goals record, scoring five (with two assists) to reach 219 in a 21-4 win over Haverhill. The previous mark was 215.

Framingham senior Adam Kornbau broke his school’s single-game goals record with 11 in a 27-6 win over Braintree.

Senior Kareem Chaplin II won the 100-meter dash for Canton, setting a school record in 10.7 seconds during an 85-51 loss to Oliver Ames.

Also on Tuesday, Wakefield junior Kathryn Sliski pitched a no-hitter, and Medfield junior Izzy Kittredge notched her 200th career point while tallying 9 of them (5 goals, 4 assists) in a 20-5 win over Norton.

On Monday, Triton senior Emma Penniman collected her 600th strikeout, while Dighton-Rehoboth’s Camryn Cloonan and Old Colony’s Kayleigh deSousa both notched their 100th hits. On Saturday, North Andover senior Isa Robinson recorded her 200th goal.

2. Walk-off wins

In a premier boys’ lacrosse matchup pitting No. 1 St. John’s Prep against No. 2 BC High, Josh Barton netted the overtime winner for a 7-6 victory after Will Crawford won the opening draw of the extra frame.

Senior midfielder Jack Cooper’s third goal was the overtime winner for Andover in an 11-10 win over North Andover, while Sandwich’s Matthew Taylor laced a walk-off RBI single to beat Cohasset, 7-6.

3. Going, going, gone

It was a mostly quiet day on the diamonds with a few exceptions, most notably Minuteman’s Paige King, who blasted a first-inning grand slam to set the tone in a 15-3 win over Nashoba Valley Tech.

For the second straight game, Chelmsford’s Zoey Moscato homered, this one in an 8-6 win over Lexington, which got a three-run shot from Sophie Glavine.

Starting pitcher Riley Chaplin homered for Notre Dame Academy (Hingham) in a 19-3 win over Dennis-Yarmouth, and Riley Egan blasted one for East Bridgewater in a softball loss to Abington.

Charlestown’s Reagan O’Brien, a Boston Latin graduate, was named the Big Ten women’s lacrosse Defender of the Year. O’Brien, a junior at Johns Hopkins, was previously named First Team All-Big Ten and to the Big Ten All-Tournament team.

O’Brien led the nation with 85 caused turnovers, averaging 4.72 per game; she broke the NCAA single-season record of 82 during the Big Ten semifinals, and is the Johns Hopkins career leader with 148 in 54 games. She tallied career highs in ground balls (52), assists (4), and draw controls (10).

A few notes from over the weekend: Nauset senior Logan Poulin, who recently decommitted from playing men’s lacrosse at Vermont, signed a tender with the Northeast Generals, a Tier II NAHL junior hockey team based out of Canton. Poulin led Nauset to a Division 3 state championship in March, finishing the season with 53 goals and 32 assists for 87 points in 25 games.

Brockton graduate Cameron Monteiro announced he will transfer to Akron after one season as a wide receiver at Pitt. The 6-foot-1-inch, 180-pound Monteiro appeared in just two games and recorded no statistics, retaining a year of eligibility.

New Bedford graduate Shahid Barros announced his transfer from South Dakota to Iowa. The 6-foot-1-inch, 195-pound senior safety spent four years with the Jackrabbits, playing in 36 games and finishing with 101 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 interceptions, 2 forced fumbles, and 12 passes deflected.

Xaverian graduate Cole Canty, of Dover, announced he is entering the transfer portal with three years of eligibility remaining after two seasons at Sacred Heart. The 6-foot-4-inch, 300-pound right tackle started five games and played in 11 for the Pioneers last year.

▪ On the heels of leading Georgetown to its first boys’ basketball state title, Josh Kielty will make the move to St. Mary’s in Lynn.

In eight years at Georgetown, Keilty compiled a 100-61 record. He replaces David Brown, who resigned earlier this month after 13 seasons and two state championships with the Spartans.

Keilty, a Georgetown High and Salem State graduate, also has experience as an assistant at St. John’s Prep and as the athletic director of the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence.

“I couldn’t be more excited,” said Keilty, who teaches at Lynn Classical and lives in Lynnfield with his wife, Adriana, and their three young children. “I’m honored and humbled. I wasn’t looking for jobs, but this opportunity at St. Mary’s was too good to pass up. I have so much respect for the program and the school.”

▪ After 12 years as an assistant with the program, former Boston University defender/winger Dan McGoff was promoted to head boys’ hockey coach at Nobles.

Originally from Winchester, McGoff is a 2004 Nobles alumni who played four years at BU before bouncing around the ECHL, CHL, and international leagues.

▪ Mark Leonard has stepped down as the boys’ hockey coach at Essex Tech after six seasons. His son, Brady Leonard, will attend Albany Academy for a post-grad year and he wanted more time to watch him play.

Leonard, a MSHCA Hall of Famer, is the wins leader at both Essex Tech (84) and Peabody, and has 312 career wins.

▪ Bob Marinelli, who coached St. John’s Prep boys’ hockey for 12 years and was a football official, has died. Marinelli was the program’s head coach from 1995-2007, but stayed around as a volunteer and officially retired last season after 42 years.

“We are very pleased to have Josh lead our boys basketball program and join the St. Mary’s family,” said athletic director Jeff Newhall. “He is a proven commodity who has established himself as one of the top coaches in the state. We are confident that success will continue at St. Mary’s.”

Keilty’s Georgetown teams qualified for the MIAA tournament six straight years (there was no tournament in 2021 due to the pandemic) and averaged more than 16 wins the last four seasons, culminating in the state championship run this year.

“I’m very grateful for the opportunity Georgetown gave me and I will always treasure the experience I had there,” Keilty said in a school release. “There were a lot of people who helped make that work. For me, the best part about coaching is the relationships you build. I feel fortunate to have coached so many highly motivated players who helped us achieve the success we had.”
