Pushing hard
1 / 4 Provo players pose for a photo after the Region 8 game against Orem in Provo on Friday, April 25, 2025. Juan Diego Camarena, Provo High 2 / 4 Provo’s Fred Mendez Ortega (10) stands for the introductions prior to the Region 8 game against Orem in Provo on Friday, April 25, 2025. […]

Fred Mendez Ortega was physically and probably even emotionally spent, and who could blame him?
The Provo High forward had just completed a full-out sprint spanning more than half of the entire field during the Bulldog’s inspiring 5-1 win over Orem on Friday. He managed to find himself just ahead of the nearest defender with an open shot looming ahead. The senior pulled the trigger, but unfortunately just missed outside of the near post.
Ortega found himself lying face first on the ground for several minutes before rising to finish off the final minute of the game, as a result.
“Trying to score at full speed isn’t that easy, that’s for sure,” Ortega said with a chuckle. “I had an amazing run, but it just killed me. I was totally drained.”
Drained for all the right reasons.
Ortega, as he has all season long, was involved with just about everything that went right for Provo in its big win. Whether it be forcing action on the offensive end, disrupting a midfield charge or putting the ball on goal on more than several occasions, Ortega did it all.
“Fred is such a dynamic player that he demands the attention of the entire defense,” Provo head coach Jayson Mansanarez said. “So a lot of the times we go the way Fred goes and tonight he was big. But the great thing was that it wasn’t just him.”
No, it wasn’t just Ortega for Provo on Friday.
Goals were added by Dieter Lang in the game’s third minute and followed up with scores from Diego Reyes, Tony Haro and Saxon Gutzman to give Provo a resounding 5-1 win.
But in the middle of almost all of it was Ortega, lending more than just his typical dominant play.
“Fred adds an energy that only some players can do. Not everyone has that ability,” Mansanarez explained. “He’s the one. He’s got it. He’s the heart and soul of the team, brings the energy and everyone follows him. It’s inspiring. It’s fun to watch.”
Mansanarez reserved praise for everyone who took the pitch for Provo, along with Ortega, but made certain to point out the play of Matt Hodges.
“Matt Hodges is an example of guys that really helped us tonight,” Mansanarez said. “It was the best game of his career. He was outstanding holding the center mid position. It all starts right there.”
“This group of boys are all brothers. This isn’t a team. It’s a family,” added Ortega. “We’re so united and so together and I embrace being an emotional leader. I’ll do anything for my boys.”
Although Provo started things out as well as could be imagined, leading 2-0 at the half, Orem came back strong in the second, with Weston Warnick scoring a goal with just over 30 minutes remaining to cut the lead to 2-1.
But Provo regrouped and answered right back with Reyes’ aforementioned goal, which came off a great free kick from midfield off of the leg of goalie Spencer Shuman just five minutes later.
Again it was Ortega forcing the action in the game’s 65th minute which ended up with Haro finding the back of the net before Gutzman topped the scoring off, heading the ball in off of a corner kick.
As for Ortega, the senior striker probably should have had at least a couple of more goals on the night, as several of his attempts just missed the target or encountered brilliant saves.
“It honestly felt like he should have had ten goals to be honest,” Mansanarez said. “He was just everywhere tonight, and when he’s like that we’re extremely tough to beat.”
For Provo, Friday’s win snapped a tough stretch where it lost three of four matches and offered some revenge after taking a 3-0 defeat to Orem exactly two weeks prior.
“That Orem team is incredible,” said Mansanarez. “We knew we’d have to be at our best today and our guys brought it. We did a good job and we were highly motivated. We knew that we had something that we needed to prove.”
And the proof was there throughout the entire 80 minutes, leaving Mansanarez grinning widely after.
“Actually this is who I thought we would be this season,” Mansanarez said of his team’s complete game performance on Friday. “It’s just taken a while to get there. We’ve had a few injuries and other things that have hindered us.”
With the win Provo improves to 7-6 on the season and has three matches remaining before the state playoffs. It’s a playoff Manasanarez and his team seem primed for, after playing in a very tough Region 7 and then apparently peaking at the right time.
“Orem is the best team in the state. That’s an incredible team right there,” Mansanarez said. “But we proved tonight that we can compete with the best. So yeah, we’re confident. I’m just so proud of the boys and how they got it done tonight. This was big for us.”

SHELBY — The Jefferson boys and Florence girls maintained their first-round leads to capture the team championships Wednesday at the Class B state golf tournament at the Marias Valley Golf & Country Club.
It’s the second consecutive state title for Jefferson’s boys, who led Choteau by just four strokes after Tuesday’s first round. But the Panthers pulled away from the field on Wednesday, finishing with 654 total strokes to outpace second-place Three Forks, which totaled 674 strokes. Malta placed third, finishing five strokes back of Three Forks.
Watch the video for highlights:
Jefferson was led by Tyson Lee, who shot a 4-over-par 76 in the second round after opening the tournament with a 71. Lee’s two-day score of 147 strokes placed him second, one shot back of individual medalist Zach Munding of Missoula Loyola. Lee and Munding were tied going to the 18th hole, and Munding drilled a par putt to win the championship after Lee bogeyed the hole.
Munding carded the only par round of the day Wednesday, shooting an even-par 72 to overtake Lee for the individual title. Munding had three birdies, three bogeys and 12 pars on the day.
Following Munding and Lee on the leaderboard were Choteau’s Kellen Meyer, Huntley Project’s Griffin Zimmer and Jefferson’s Ben Werner, who finished in a three-way tie for third with 154 total shots. Zimmer carded a 3-over-par 75 on Wednesday, while Meyer and Werner both shot 79s.
On the girls side, Florence won the team trophy in lopsided fashion, totaling 760 strokes, well ahead of second-place Shelby, which finished with 804 total shots. Lone Peak, the 2024 state champion, was third with 806 strokes.
It’s the first state golf championship in program history for the Florence girls, who placed second last year.

Florence’s Kipley Solari had the best girls round of the day, carding a 5-over-par 77 to overcome a four-stroke deficit to win the individual championship. After shooting an 88 in Tuesday’s first round, Solari recorded 12 pars on Wednesday. She birdied the par-5 fourth to go along with four bogeys and one double bogey on the day.
Solari finished the two-day tournament with 165 strokes to finish four shots ahead of second-place Logan McKay of Anaconda. McKay led after her first-round 84 but fell behind Solari with a second-round 85.
Elise Munding of Missoula Loyola placed third with 170 strokes, followed by Lone Peak’s Dylan Manka in fourth at 173 and Shelby’s Penelope Heaton in fifth at 178.

About 80 people heard a rundown of Franklin Special District’s biggest achievements from the past year during a FrankTalks discussion on Monday, May 12.
Highlights included the launch of the district’s Introduction to Aerospace course for eighth-grade students, the district’s rebranding and the opening of its new central office earlier this year.
The event took place at FSD’s new office at 205 Eddy Lane. FrankTalks is a monthly discussion series hosted by Franklin Tomorrow to spread awareness of issues affecting the community.
New buildings and brands
Dr. David Esslinger, associate director of schools for finance and administration, described the process of planning and constructing the office and the facilities and transportation building next door.
“We bought five acres and renovated the old steel building for the FTC building,” he said. “Our vision was to create a space where all district-level staff could work in one complex.”
The benefits included freeing up space at Freedom Middle School and other locations across Franklin where FSD staff previously worked. Workplace satisfaction has also improved in one major way since the new office opened in January, Esslinger said.
“Each office has access to direct sunlight,” he said. “This is a building that was designed to serve FSD for many years to come, and I’m very proud of it.”
Director of Schools David Snowden also discussed the district’s rebranding from Franklin Special School District to Franklin Special District last August.
The idea was born during a staff retreat during the 2022-2023 school year, and the district worked with BrandMETTLE advertising firm to plan the district’s new name, logo and message.
“It was very forward-thinking,” Snowden said. “Even though the brand was not bad.”
During focus groups and a brand-scape analysis, administration decided to scrap the word “Special” from its advertising and signage due to confusion from the public over the word’s meaning.
Administration also decided on the mottos “Students First. Excellence Always. No Exceptions,” and “Excellence has its own district” as a way to demonstrate FSD’s core values, Snowden said.
Although the district’s legal name remains Franklin Special School District, the new message has increased recognition of the district across Williamson County and beyond.
“We feel it’s a modern identity that we now have,” he said. “We’re very excited about the direction we’re going.”
Aerospace course going well
Dr. Mary Decker, associate director of schools for teaching and learning, described the new Introduction to Aerospace program that launched at Freedom and Poplar Grove middle schools this school year.
The program uses Redbird Jay Velocity flight simulators and lessons crafted from the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association High School STEM Aviation Curriculum to teach the basics of navigation and flight patterns.
The program is a springboard to Williamson County Schools’ high school aviation program and possible careers as pilots, airplane technicians and flight attendants, among others, Decker said.
She added that students have taken to the course “beyond our wildest dreams” and credited a state Innovative School Models grant for making it possible.
“It was a team effort in getting this program off the ground, pun intended,” she said.
Decker also praised FSD’s Coordinated Creators entrepreneurship program, which is sending five teams of middle school students to the national Invention Convention at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan, in June.
Coordinated Creators teams pitch ideas for new products to community leaders and then present the finished products in local and state competitions. Several teams’ presentations were on display during FrankTalks, including Frosthelete athletic gloves with attached sleeves, and the Hydrowheel, a wheelbarrow that waters crops as it moves.
Susan Lane, who attended the discussion with her husband, sent her two children to FSD schools in the 1980s, and has two grandchildren in the district now. She enjoyed hearing about how far the district has come.
