BILLINGS — The Real Billings Football Club G2010 Gold recently did something no other Treasure State soccer team had previously accomplished.
At the U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regional Championships June 20-25 in Boise, Idaho, the team consisting of Billings-area girls ages 14-15 captured the 15U girls championship.
Real Billings — which featured players from Billings Senior, Billings Skyview, Billings West, Billings Central, Lockwood, and Laurel — finished the tourney 5-0 to become the first Montana team from the Far West Regional to advance to nationals. The U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships are July 22-27 in Orlando, Florida.

In the semifinals, the G2010 Gold Real Billings FC defeated the Oxnard United Soccer Club (California), 3-0. In the championships, Real Billings downed the Cook Inlet SC (Alaska), 1-0.
“It was unexpected for one and feels great,” RBFC G2010 Gold coach Kevin Luse told The Billings Gazette and 406 MT Sports. “I think the players, obviously, were very excited after making it through. What they do is they have a group, and they have the group rounds. You’re put in a group and then if you win your group, you move on to the semifinals and then on to the final.
“And I think once we won our group, we were pretty excited just to get into the semifinal and then going from there into the final. … We just kept on pinching ourselves (laughs). It was good. This team had done well last year and kind of just kept on moving forward this year, getting better and better as the season went on.”
Luse said that the Billings club’s work ethic and clutch play were key to running the table at regionals and winning five games in six days.
“That’s not enough rest, really, because they’re tough games,” he said. “And you know, it wears you down a little bit. But again, this team just finds a way to win, no matter what; if it’s the fifth game of a tournament or if it’s the first game of a tournament. They’re just very competitive. But, they’re really a together bunch. They react to who they’re playing as a team. So, tactically they’re pretty smart.”
The Real Billings FC G010 Gold girls began play in the state premier league regular season in March, RBFC director of coaching Richard Duffy explained. At the conclusion of the regular season, the squad participated in the Montana State Cup May 17-18 in Helena.
By winning the state tourney, Real Billings advanced to the regional tournament.
“I’m extremely proud,” said Duffy of the team winning state and regionals. “I was lucky enough to be down there for the whole tournament, so I was kind of along or the ride.”

The RBFC G2010 gold team members are: Reagan Bohnemann, Adelynn Crookston, Amelia Hernandez, Maycee Krebs, Emberlyn Agyeman-Budu, Kinsley Soucy, Romy Parnell, Kaitlyn Cross, Leah Roberts. Emerson Dull, Ashtyn Staples, Allie Treese, Cora Carahasen, Madeliyne Hutzenbiler, Elizabeth Baker, Margaret Baker and Sawyer Curnow. Dan Parnell is the assistant coach.
Neither Duffy nor Luse knew the exact won-loss record of the Real Billings FC G2010 gold squad, but Luse said the team didn’t lose a game at the state level this year.
“We went to a Colorado showcase in Denver,” recalled Luse. “We lost two games down there. They were close, but I think those are the only two games that we’ve lost all season.”
Duffy was also proud that the RBFC had two squads playing in championship matches in Boise, with the the club’s 2009 girls placing second in their division.
“We also had our 2009 girls make the championship, which is pretty amazing, too,” he said. “Not only had no (Montana) team ever won it; no teams had ever qualified for the final of that event (USYS Far West Regional Championships). So, we actually had two teams from our club make the final.”
The program is fundraising now to help cover the cost of traveling to nationals. Those interested can make a payment through Venmo (a QR code is attached to the online version of this story at 406 MT Sports), or contact team manager Jeffifer Cross at 406-698-5898 or Duffy at 406-697-3833.
Luse said that while there will be plenty to learn leading up to, and at, the national tournament — he is confident in his squad.
“Everything is just unknown. We’ve never seen these teams before, so we don’t really know what to expect going into it; just as we did going into the regional tournament. We didn’t know any one of those teams,” he said. “After the first 5-10 minutes, this team adapts to how to play; whether you have to be more defensive or if you can play a more attacking style. There’s a couple different tactics this team can play, and I think they can adjust pretty quickly to what team they’re playing against.”
