A Red Deer tennis player will compete on the national stage this week.

Bruno Simon, Garcia’s coach, said the Red Deer athlete has “an excellent understanding of strategy” and the skills to execute it.

Garcia won the singles 4 Stars U12 tournament in Red Deer on Feb. 9. He was also the finalist in the singles finals at the 5 Stars U12 Provincials in Calgary on March 2 — he won the U12 doubles competition with his partner as well.

“Central Alberta is very fortunate to have such high calibre coaches in the region,” said the parents.

“I like to find ways to come back and win the match when I am losing. Like all players, I also like the good feeling of winning.”

Maryse Guénette and Manuel Garcia, parents of Nicolas Garcia, said the coaches at Simon Tennis School have been “instrumental” in supporting their son’s tennis skills development.

Nicolas played in U14 provincials (5 stars) in Edmonton, where he was defeated in the consolation semifinals in both singles and doubles.

Nicolas Garcia, 11, will represent Alberta at the U12 Indoor Junior Nationals in Calgary from March 21-28. Heading into the national competition, Garcia is ranked as the No. 2 U12 player in the province and 19th nationwide. He will be just one of four Alberta boys competing at the event.

“Nicolas is always eager to learn and works hard. He constantly thinks about ways to improve his game. When learning something new, he first needs to be convinced that the information will benefit his game. Although this trait can sometimes be a bit frustrating, it leads him to ask questions and develop a deeper understanding of new strategies and how they can be applied to his current game.”

“I am excited to meet new people, to make new friends and to play different players with different skill sets,” Garcia said ahead of the tournament.

Fellow coach Rene Simon added: “(Garcia) never gives up even, if he is super tired. He is really aware of the importance of certain moments. And usually, he is very calm and strategic in his mind.”

“Nicolas loves tennis. When he is not playing on the court he is often practicing his shots in our basement; hitting a soft ball on the wall with a table tennis racquet. Nicolas worked really hard to join his brother, Sebastian Garcia, in the ‘big kid’ group. Nicolas has certainly earned his spot in the group. Nicolas has big dreams for tennis and we hope to be able to support him and his brother to reach their dreams.”

“He excels at adjusting to his opponents and playing to their weaknesses. He also makes very few unforced errors, forcing opponents to earn every point against him,” said Simon.
