INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA has officially released its 2023-24 Academic Progress Rate (APR) data for all NCAA Division I institutions today, highlighting the academic success of the student-athletes at Kansas City Athletics.

Kansas City Women’s Tennis led the charge for the Roos, posting an APR of 1,000. Three other programs posted multi-year scores above the 980 threshold: women’s soccer at 986, women’s cross country at 986 and volleyball at 984.

Established in 2003, the APR system provides a metric for institutions to measure the progress of student-athletes, accounting for eligibility and retention through each academic term. It is a composite team measurement based upon individual academic success with a 1,000 point score representing the maximum.

As a Carnegie R1 institution, academic success is a point of pride at Kansas City Athletics and within the UMKC community, ensuring a promising future for student-athletes even after their time on the court, field or track comes to a close.

Complex Will Allow For Continued Compliance Of Title IX

BERKELEY – The University of California has begun construction of the Banatao Family Beach Volleyball Stadium, located west of Edwards Stadium at the corner of Bancroft Street and Fulton Way.

“We are thrilled about the construction of our new state-of-the-art beach volleyball facility,” Cal Director of Athletics Jim Knowlton said. “It will allow our program to compete against the best and provide our student-athletes with the resources they need to have the world-class student-athlete experience that Cal offers. I’m looking forward to watching it come to life.”

The renovation is expected to take 16-18 months to complete. Cal’s beach volleyball team has been playing and practicing at the Clark Kerr Sand Courts, which will remain for recreational use. The new facility will be managed by Cal Athletics and be used for other recreational activities as well.

Key features of the facility include:

  • Five sand volleyball courts designed for NCAA competition
  • A building with team rooms, locker rooms, restrooms, coaches’ offices and storage
  • Enhanced amenities such as lighting, a scoreboard, public address system and an area for spectators

“We are thrilled to break ground on our new facility,” Cal head coach Meagan Owusu said. “This project will positively impact every piece of our program, from student-athlete experience to recruiting to training. Our program is grateful to Jim Knowlton, (Chancellor) Rich Lyons and the rest of the campus and athletic department for supporting this project.”

Cal’s beach volleyball program is one of the most successful in the nation, having reached the NCAA Tournament in each of the past four seasons and finished the year in the national rankings for eight consecutive seasons.

The renovation project is being partially funded by Cal’s successful Gender Equity Campaign that raised $8 million. The campaign was launched to support the university’s commitment to and compliance with Title IX — the landmark federal law enacted in 1972 that prohibits sex discrimination in any educational program or activity receiving any type of federal financial aid.

“We are immeasurably grateful for the support of our Cal Family – including the campaign committee, donors and the Banatao family – that understands the significance of gender equity and helped make this project possible,” Cal Chief Development Officer Beth Tafolla-Voetsch said. “I can’t wait to see our student-athletes compete at what will be one of the premier facilities in the country.”

Dos Pueblos High School is proud to announce that Sienna van Alphen has been appointed as the school’s next Athletic Director, effective July 1, 2025, pending board approval on Tuesday.

Sienna van Alphen, Dos Pueblos High School

She will succeed longtime AD Dan Feldhaus, who will return to teaching and coaching at DPHS after 17 years of distinguished service in the role.

“After Dan announced his decision to step down, we created a committee made up of Charger coaches, administrators, parents, and students and began the process to find our next athletic director,” said Dos Pueblos Principal Bill Woodard.

“After a thorough process, we realized our top candidate was already on our staff, and we are thrilled that Sienna will lead us into the next era of Charger athletics.”

Woodard praised van Alphen’s deep ties to the school and her impact on the community:

“Sienna bleeds blue and gold, and having worked in our athletic department the last few years, she has already established strong, trusting relationships with our school community. She has the energy, enthusiasm, work ethic, and leadership potential required for this extremely important position along with a vision and plan to help lead us to even greater heights,” he said. “I am excited to see her lead us into the future as the first female athletic director in our school’s illustrious history.”

Feldhaus expressed confidence in the transition. “I am extremely proud of all that we have accomplished during my tenure as Athletic Director and I am confident that the future of DP Athletics is in great hands under Sienna Van Alphen,” he said.

“She knows our school and is deeply committed to our student-athletes and coaches. Sienna brings a passion to elevate all of our teams and programs and I know DP Charger Athletics will continue to grow and thrive under her leadership.”

A 2009 graduate of Dos Pueblos and former water polo standout, van Alphen helped lead the Chargers to two CIF championships before continuing her athletic career at UCSB and playing internationally.

She has since served as a longtime coach for local water polo club SB 805, as well as coaching both boys and girls water polo at DPHS.

Reflecting on the opportunity, van Alphen said: “As a 2009 graduate of Dos Pueblos High School and a proud former water polo athlete, I am honored to continue giving back to the place I will always call home.

“Throughout my journey, I have been fortunate to have incredible female mentors like Cathy Neushul, Danelle Muhr, and Debbie Dulawan Boe (to name just a few), whose guidance and support have gotten me to where I am today. Inspired by them, I strive to be that same kind of mentor—not just for our female students, but for all students on campus.”

“For the past four years, I have had the privilege of working with DP Athletics. I am grateful for the opportunity to continue working alongside Bill Woodard and the administration and staff at DP to create a space where students feel confident, supported, and empowered to reach their goals both on and off the field.

“I am also thankful for the trust and guidance Dan Feldhaus has shown me over the past three years; his support and care for our programs is something I am proud to continue.”

The Baltimore Peninsula Partnership announced today that Volo Sports will take over the South Point park and event space at 101 W. Cromwell St. This is in addition to Club Volo, which Volo Sports launched last year at 300 E. Cromwell St.

South Point, also known as West Covington Park, is 5.5 acres of green spaces on the Middle Branch of the Patapsco River. It has four beach volleyball courts, a large lawn, an events tent, a pier, a path system, and a parking lot. Volo has used the park in previous years for beach volleyball and kickball.

South Point was launched in 2018 as seasonal outdoor pop-up bar. It never reopened as a bar after the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, but has been used a concert and event space in recent years.

Volo plans to host weddings and private celebrations at South Point in addition to festivals, musical performances, and its sports programming.

Already planned for this year at South Point is the Polo & Jazz Celebrity Charity Event, Run Up to Juneteenth, the 2025 Baltimore Dragon Boat Challenge, Afro-Caribbean Weekend, Rasta City, Collective Minds Festival, and the R&B Soul Food Festival.

Club Volo features four beach volleyball courts; 11 pickleball courts; two fields for kickball, soccer, and flag football; and spaces for bocce ball and cornhole. The site also has food and beverage trucks and seating areas.

“From Club Volo to fitness classes and live music, the Baltimore Peninsula team keeps raising the bar with experiences that celebrate our community, culture, and our small businesses,” said Claudia Jolin, executive director of the Baltimore Peninsula Partnership, in a press release. “We can’t wait to welcome even more Baltimoreans to the waterfront and show off the views, energy and vibe – everything that makes our neighborhood so special.”

“We are proud to return to Baltimore Peninsula for a second year to bring sports, entertainment, and the Volo community to this waterfront destination,””” said Giovanni Marcantoni, founder of Volo Sports, in a press release. “At Volo, our mission has always been about more than just the game — it’s about building community and creating spaces where people can come together, stay active, and have fun. Volo’s involvement at South Point this year will return sports to the site and continue to provide top level entertainment. We’re excited to continue being a part of the momentum at the Peninsula and to grow alongside this vibrant neighborhood.”
