River Hawks Gear Up for Busy Week vs. Dartmouth, Stonehill and Maine

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell baseball team (10-15) is ready to take on five games this week. The squad heads to Dartmouth (2-14) on Tuesday to start the month of April, before visiting Stonehill (6-17) on Wednesday April 2. The River Hawks then finish the week with a conference series at Maine (7-19) beginning on Friday, April 4. 

SCOUTING MAINE
Maine fell, 2-0 against NJIT on March 30, dropping to 7-19 overall on the season. Junior Chris Bear and junior Eric Wainwright each tallied one knock in Sunday’s game. Maine is currently tied for third in the conference with a 3-3 record. Senior Myles Sargent has collected 26 hits, 19 RBI and 12 runs. Another leading offensive player is junior Brody Rasmussen, earning 28 hits, 14 RBI and 18 runs. Redshirt-junior Colin Fitzgerald has thrown in 46.1 innings, while fanning 36 batters with a 4.08 ERA. 

The River Hawks have met Stonehill in 14 contests, sitting at a 6-8 overall record against the Skyhawks. UMass Lowell took a 2-1 victory over Stonehill in its most recent matchup on April 10, 2024. The River Hawks are currently on a two-game win streak over the Skyhawks. 

MATCHUP HISTORY
The River Hawks have matched up against Dartmouth eight different times, leading the series with a 5-3 overall record over the Big Green. UMass Lowell holds a 4-0 away record on Dartmouth all-time. 

SCOUTING DARTMOUTH
Dartmouth takes on the River Hawks after a 5-1 defeat against Penn on March 29, moving to 2-14 overall on the season. Sophomore Ethan Brown has been a player to watch for the Big Green, totaling 21 hits, eight RBI and 11 runs on a .368 batting average and an OPS of 1.061. Another offensive piece, senior Elliot Krewson has recorded 14 hits, six RBI and eight runs. Sophomore Nate Isler has been an effective pitcher tossing in 25.1 innings, while striking out 17 batters and posting a 1.54 WHIP. 

AE OVERALL PLAYER STATISTICAL RANKS
Fish stays at the top of the conference standings for batting average (.413). Luccini owns second in slugging percentage at .663, with Fish ranking third (.640). Fish is also fourth in the America East in on-base percentage (.471), but leads in OPS at 1.111, as Luccini follows in third (1.089). Luccini is ranked third for runs (25) in the conference. Fish is tied for first in the America East for doubles (10). Luccini is sitting in first in triples (3) and Fish is tied for second with two. Luccini is tied for second for total home runs, as well. 

LOVING THE LONG BALL
This past weekend Martinez knocked two homers, one in each game of the doubleheader against Bryant. The previous weekend, Luccini recorded one homer in both games of a twin bill versus Le Moyne. 

Redshirt-sophomore Nick Dirito (Plymouth, Mass.) leads the pitching staff in earned run average (3.42). Holland, Dirito, junior Brian Foley (Milton, Mass.), and senior Andres Hulfachor (Nashua, N.H.) each have two wins on the season. Dirito is also sitting in first with a team-high three saves. Holland still totals the most innings, so far, with 35.2 frames pitched, and a team-high 37 batters struck out. 

WALK IT OFF AGAIN
The River Hawks ended the home opener on March 19 with a walk-off single for a 8-7 victory against Holy Cross. A little over a week later, another walk-off single came on March 28, earning UMass Lowell a 5-4 triumph over Bryant. The last time UMass Lowell recorded two walk-offs in back-to-back weeks was during the 2024 season from Trey Brown and Luccini.

ETCHING HIS NAME IN THE RECORD BOOK
In the second game versus Bryant on March 28, Holland was unfazed on the bump, as he struck out 11 batters to tie the River Hawks’ Division I single-game record. He matched Matt Draper’s effort from March 4, 2023 against James Madison. 

UMass Lowell has faced America East opponent Maine in 47 different matchups during the Division I era. The most recent game between the Black Bears ended in a 14-9 victory for the River Hawks on April 14, 2024. Maine leads the series, 28-19.

LAST TIME OUT
The River Hawks went 2-2 last week. A local matchup at Merrimack on March 25 began the week for the River Hawks, as Alex Luccini (Hopedale, Mass.) was consistent from the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and one run, despite the 4-2 setback. Junior Carlos Martinez (Coamo, Puerto Rico) started the Bryant series on a high note, hitting 4-for-7 on March 28 with two homers, six RBI and five runs, helping UMass Lowell sweep a twin bill. The River Hawks earned a 15-6 victory, following 13 knocks at the plate in the first game on Friday before senior Conor Kelly (Hopkinton, Mass.) walked it off in the 5-4 nightcap. Redshirt-junior Brendan Holland (North Andover, Mass.) had an enormous start on the mound during the second game, pitching 7.0 innings, while tossing 11 strikeouts, tying the UMass Lowell Division I single-game record. 

STRIKE THREE YOU’RE OUT
UMass Lowell’s pitching staff has totaled four games so far with 12+ strikeouts. The River Hawks tallied 14 K’s in the nightcap vs. Bryant on March 28. The team high is 15 strikeouts this season, which came on March 23, 2025 versus Le Moyne. The Division I program record stands at 16 total strikeouts, back in 2018. 

Holland has thrown in the fourth most innings in the America East (35.2), while boasting the most strikeouts (37), so far. Dirito is sitting in third for saves (3). 

LEADING THE FLOCK
Senior Brandon Fish (Londonderry, N.H.) leads the team at the plate with a .413 batting average. He also paces the squad with 10 doubles and a .471 on-base percentage. He is also currently tied for first in hits (31) with sophomore Scott Donahue (Medfield, Mass.) and Luccini. Sophomore Sean O’Leary (Foxboro, Mass.) has tallied a 1.168 OPS and a .706 slugging percentage to lead the team. Luccini ranks first in runs (25), triples (3) and home runs (6), while junior Joseph DeLanzo (Nutley, N.J.) is ranked at the top of the team in RBI (20). Junior Zachary Scott (Lunenburg, Mass.) leads the team with nine stolen bases. 

CRACKING THE LEADERBOARD
Fish remains on the NCAA leaderboard, tied for 43rd in doubles (10), while Luccini is tied for 19th in triples (3) and 30th for triples per game (.14). 

SCOUTING STONEHILL
Stonehill owns a 6-17 overall record, falling in its most recent contest, 4-2, on March 30 against Wagner. Sophomore Grayson Sparr tallied two knocks and one RBI in Sunday’s loss. Sparr has been an impact player for the Skyhawks, recording 29 hits with six home runs, as well as 27 RBI and 17 runs. Sparr has also posted a .420 batting average and a 1.254 OPS. Senior Sam Parks adds 26 hits, 13 RBI and 24 runs. A big pitcher to watch is junior Jimmy Gilleran, collecting 16 strikeouts in 29.0 innings pitched with a 5.28 earned run average. 

HIT INTO PLAY
So far, the River Hawks have totaled 13 games this season with 10+ hits. UMass Lowell registered double-digit hits in both ends of this past Friday’s doubleheader, posting 13 knocks in the first contest and 10 in the next. The team’s overall record in those 13 games is 8-5. On Sunday, March 9, the River Hawks stroked a season high 21-total knocks versus Lafayette.
