The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is happening all weekend. It kicked off on Wednesday. However, racing starts Friday. There will be 14 different classes of vintage cars racing. They were out on the track practicing on Wednesday and Thursday. This year, the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is doing it big, bringing in more than 50 F-1 cars, both historic and modern, for Formula One’s 75th anniversary. As you look at the cars on display, you’ll see a lot of history, like the first Honda to win a Formula One race in 1965 and the only Porsche to win an F1 race, which will be on the track this weekend. “Ticket sales have been really strong,” WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca General Manager and President Mel Harder said. “We expect a strong walk-up as well, so the weather’s been great. It’s Monterey car week. There’s a lot of enthusiasm for the event.”New this year is the IROC class, International Race of Champions, racing for the first time since 2006 at Laguna Seca. The series started in 1973 with Porsches, bringing together Formula One, IndyCar, and NASCAR drivers in identically prepared cars to see who was the best driver. “These cars, if they could talk, would tell an incredible story,” said Ray Evernham, an IROC Series owner. “But they {guests} can also, when they walk through here, they’re going to see guys like Jeff Gordon, Mark Martin, Bobby Labonte, Danny Sullivan, Jenson Button. So we’ve got current Daytona 500 winners, Indy winners, Dario Franchitti coming here to drive these vintage cars.”The 24 IROC race cars have been driven by legends, some of whom will be racing on Saturday. There are Porsches, Chevrolets, and Camaros. “To me, it’s the biggest historic race, definitely in the country. Maybe in the world, the cars and the people that come here are true fans of the sport,” Evernham said. “So to have our cars on display here and be on the track racing for the first time in over 20 years is pretty exciting.”Friday and Saturday are the big race days, followed by autograph sessions. There’s action today and every day this weekend, from 8 to 5, on and off the track.Click here for more information.
