  • Ryan Blaney won the race, but Larson secured the championship by finishing third.

Kyle Larson claimed his second NASCAR Cup Series championship in dramatic fashion on Nov. 2 by taking advantage of a late caution and holding off Denny Hamlin in overtime in the Championship race at Phoenix.

Ryan Blaney won the race after leading 20 laps, but was not part of the Championship 4.

Larson, 33, also won the championship in 2021 at Phoenix Raceway. The driver of the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet finished third in the race on Nov. 2 behind Blaney and Brad Keselowski, who took the lead on the final restart.

It was the 15th championship for Hendrick Motorsports.

Hamlin, who led 208 of the 312 laps, was poised to win his first championship before the late caution was brought out when William Byron, also in the Championship 4, got into the marbles and hit the wall with three laps to go. Hamlin was leading the race when the caution came out.

Hamlin finished sixth overall in the race. Byron finished 33rd, and the other Championship 4 driver Chase Briscoe was 18th.

Like Hamlin, Briscoe and Byron were trying to win their first championship.
