The quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, Derek Carr, exited their 14-11 victory against the New York Giants early on Sunday afternoon after an awkward landing on his left arm.
While details remain unclear, it is possible that the Saints will be without Carr for the closing part of the season. Concerns are that Carr might have suffered a fracture in his left hand, as reported by Ian Rapoport from NFL Network. Additional tests will be conducted soon to assess the seriousness of his injury.
During the late fourth quarter at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, Carr attempted to run for a first down, diving over three players to achieve it. However, as he fell out of bounds just short of the first down marker, he landed directly on his left wrist and arm.
Upon hitting the ground, he instantly reached for his arm, showing evident distress.
Carr made his way off the field and toward the locker room, barely moving his left arm. He did not return to the game.
Backup Jake Haener took over for the remainder of the drive, yet New Orleans failed to convert on third down and was forced to punt the ball. The Saints then intercepted Giants quarterback Drew Lock on their second-to-last drive, and in the closing moments, Giants kicker Graham Gano had a 35-yard field goal attempt blocked. That missed field goal, which likely would have forced overtime, secured a three-point win for the Saints.
Carr concluded the game completing 20 of 31 passes for 219 yards. He threw an 11-yard touchdown to Juwan Johnson during the third quarter, which temporarily put the Saints ahead 14-3. Additionally, he recorded his fifth interception of the season early in the second half, which snapped a historic 11-game drought for the Giants defense.
Entering Sunday’s contest, Carr had accumulated 1,926 passing yards and 14 touchdowns. The 33-year-old had previously missed three games earlier in the season due to an oblique injury sustained after taking a hard hit in a defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs in October, but he returned to play for their loss against the Carolina Panthers on November 3. With this victory, the Saints improved to a 5-8 record, marking their third win in the last four games.
Lock completed 21 of 49 passes for 227 yards with one interception for the Giants, who fell to 2-11 with this defeat. They have not won since October 6. Lock also was the leading rusher for the team with 59 yards on five carries.
