Sydney Hastings has always dreamed of attending the University of Michigan.
Now, that aspiration is becoming a reality for her, as she has officially signed to play softball at the university, which is conveniently located near her home in Saline.
The Sun Times News spoke with Hastings to discuss her recent commitment to become a Wolverine. Hastings is an exceptional softball player at Saline High School.
“I am extremely excited about signing; it was such an enjoyable experience and I appreciated all the support that came out for signing day,” Hastings remarked. “I am also incredibly thankful for this incredible opportunity to continue playing softball at the collegiate level at such a prestigious school.”
She stated that she chose Michigan because it has “always been my dream school since I was a child.”
“I have been attending Michigan softball and football games ever since I was young,” she mentioned. “I admire the reputation and academic excellence that Michigan offers. Being so close to home makes the campus feel familiar, and I can easily visit my family whenever I want. I chose Michigan Softball due to the program’s culture, the team dynamic, and the wonderful coaches there.”
The chance to keep playing softball means a lot to her, as it’s the sport she is most passionate about.
“I love every aspect of softball,” she expressed. “I appreciate how the sport has shaped me into a leader, allowed me to build lasting friendships with my teammates, and taught me how to overcome challenges. I adore the feeling of seeing my hard work rewarded and the thrill of hitting a big play or making a crucial out. This thrill spreads to the team in the dugout and enhances the enjoyment of the game when we can cheer for each other’s successes.”
Some highlights during her softball career include traveling across the country with her travel softball team. She shared that she has created cherished memories with her family and her pitcher/best friend Kaitlyn during these trips.
“Traveling to compete in high-level tournaments and achieving victories is incredibly fun and fulfilling,” she said. “One of my greatest accomplishments in travel softball was winning nationals in Iowa. Witnessing all my team’s hard work and dedication pay off is one of the most rewarding parts of playing softball.”
She noted that competing as a Hornet has also been immensely fulfilling and enjoyable.
“I love that I get to represent my school in the sport I cherish and that I can play alongside my teammates/best friends every day,” Hastings shared. “I am very thankful to have been on the varsity team since my freshman year, allowing me to forge some of my best relationships with coaches and teammates.”
A significant reason for this opportunity, she said, is the support she has received. It has played a crucial role in her journey.
“I want to thank my parents for all the support and resources they have provided to help me achieve my dream,” she said. “I wouldn’t be here without them, and I am incredibly grateful for their presence throughout this incredible journey. I also want to thank all the coaches I’ve had over the years who have helped me develop as both a player and a teammate. Lastly, I want to express gratitude to my teammates and friends for always being there for me and supporting me during this journey.”
