SCSU recruit Nolan Roed taken in the 7th round of the NHL Draft by Colorado
The 2025 NHL Draft was held June 27-28 in Los Angeles and the St. Cloud State men’s hockey team had one of its incoming freshmen selected.
Nolan Roed, a 19-year-old center from White Bear Lake,
was taken in the seventh round (214th overall) by the Colorado Avalanche.
Roed is listed at 5-foot-11 and 186 pounds. In his first full season in the USHL, Roed was seventh in the league in points (60), tied for eighth in goals (27), tied for 15th in assists (33), led in short-handed goals (7), had three game-winning goals and 26 penalty minutes in 61 games played. On the power play, he had four goals and eight assists.
“He had a great year,” SCSU coach Brett Larson said. “He was the go-to guy in Tri-City. The kid produces all over the rink. He’s great in his own end.
“He brings a lot of speed and pace up the rink on the rush. Offensively, he made a huge impact. I just see him as a really, really complete player.”

Roed played center for the Storm and Larson said that he expects him to play that position for the Huskies.
“I went to watch him at the end of the year in Omaha and I thought the biggest problem was they never took him off the ice,” Larson said. “He almost had to pace his game a little bit because he got so much playing time.
“I think at the college level, his pace is going to pick up and he’ll be able to attack more and really push the play offensively. He’s also great on faceoffs. He’s taken every important faceoff. I expect him to be one of our go-to guys not too far into the season.”
Like all players, there are things that he will need to improve on when he joins the Huskies this fall.
“It’s pretty much the same with every kid that age: He’s going to have to keep getting stronger and now he’ll be playing against men,” Larson said. “His explosiveness needs to keep getting better. You can’t teach his brain, his stick and his competitiveness. Those things are all high end.”
USA Hockey Boys National 16 Camp is taking place June 25-July 1 in Amherst, N.Y. Larson is scouting the camp and there are a number of St. Cloud State connections at the camp.

The Black team is being coached by SCSU assistant R.J. Enga with former SCSU star Garrett Roe (2007-11). The Black team also has forward Nash Roed, Nolan’s younger brother, and forward Dylan Sampair, the son of former SCSU forward Brandon Sampair (1997-2001). Dylan played last season for the Long Island Gulls 15-and-under AAA team. Nash played last season for the White Bear Lake High School team.
The team leader for the Royal Blue team is former SCSU forward Marty Mjelleli (2004-08).
On the Lime Green team is forward Gunnar Conboy, who played last season for Lakeville North and is the son of former SCSU defenseman Tim Conboy (2002-04).
Larson said that he also ran into former SCSU goalie Bobby Goepfert (2005-07), the assistant general manager of the USHL’s Chicago Steel.
There are two St. Cloud connections also at the camp. Cory Laylin, a St. Cloud Apollo graduate, is coaching the Gold team. St. Cloud Cathedral forward Bo Schmidt is on the White team.
