DRESDEN, OH
Spring ball has reached the high school level for football…well, to an extent, at least.
80-plus high school athletes descended upon Tri-Valley High School as part of the second annual MVL football showcase, with plenty of interested eyes on the scene.
Underclassmen from the twelve MVL schools came to Dresden to show off their skills, but they were not alone. Over thirty different college coaches and scouts were also in attendance, looking to evaluate the tremendous talent from Muskingum County for the second year running.
“These guys are being exposed and meeting guys from wherever. There’s probably some schools here that these guys got to talk to that they didn’t even know existed before today” said West Muskingum head coach Nate Brownrigg. “So if one of them ends up at a spot that they wouldn’t have otherwise, then all of this makes it worth it.”
The players all took part in rotating drills, whether they were position-based or the standard drills such as the “L-drill” or 40-yard dash.
As much as this event benefits the players, it benefits the college coaches and scouts all the same.
“Not a lot of colleges make their way to very many MVL schools” said Tri-Valley head coach Cam West. “So we’re getting to put these kids in front of college coaches here who enjoy it because they don’t have to go all over the place.”
The local underclassmen at the event relished in the opportunity to showcase their talents to college coaches, who will certainly have wide eyes on these athletes in the near future.
“I think it’s a great opportunity to go show some of these coaches that we do have a bunch of great players from the MVL” said Sheridan sophomore quarterback Tyce Whiteman.
“It felt amazing, honestly. Because this is what I love to do and getting out here with a bunch of guys I like in front of college coaches is a great experience.”
The LCL will have its own showcase on Thursday morning from Swank Field at Heath High School, beginning bright and early at 6:30 am. The new time that the athletes will be able to suit up is Friday, June 20th at Licking Heights for the annual MVL vs. LCL all-star game.

Famed musician Rick Derringer has died.
The 77-year-old’s passing was announced by his caretaker, Tony Wilson, and followed by multiple outlets.
He was born Richard Dean Zehringer and gained fame both as a guitarist and a producer, including working on “Weird” Al Yankovic’s first album.
His legacy within professional wrestling will always be tied to his “Real American” theme that became the anthem for Hulk Hogan during the WWF’s national expansion. The song was initially crafted for The U.S. Express of Mike Rotunda and Barry Windham before being moved to become Hogan’s theme.
Derringer came on board to assist in the production of WWF’s “The Wrestling Album in 1985. The release included “Grab Them Cakes” by the Junkyard Dog, “Eat Your Heart Out, Rick Springfield” by Jimmy Hart, “Tutti Frutti” by Gene Okerlund, and “Cara Mia” by Nikolai Volkoff.
Derringer was listed as a producer of the album alongside David Wolff, Jim Steinman, and Mona Flambe.
Derringer returned in 1987 to co-produce “Piledriver: The Wrestling Album II” featuring his theme for Demolition, and “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo” with Derringer & Okerlund.
