Senator Dave Rader champions sports betting bill, seeks tribal partnerships
Rader believes bringing sports betting to Oklahoma will help bring in revenue for the state.”I think it gives us a chance to strengthen our communication and our partnership with the tribes. I think it’s a win win win. I think it’s a win for the tribes, I think it’s a win for the state, think […]

Rader believes bringing sports betting to Oklahoma will help bring in revenue for the state.”I think it gives us a chance to strengthen our communication and our partnership with the tribes. I think it’s a win win win. I think it’s a win for the tribes, I think it’s a win for the state, think it’s a win for our taxpayers,” said Senator Dave Rader. OKLAHOMA CITY- (KOKH) — As the new year begins, so does another push to legalize sports betting in Oklahoma. Rader added it’s also important that sports betting is legalized in Oklahoma so that the state can stay ahead of the curve compared to other states.”We need to do it before Texas does. We have many many vehicles driving from Texas to Oklahoma to gamble at the tribal casinos, and we sure would like for those cars to continually be pointed at Oklahoma,” he said. FOX 25 reached out to several of the tribes to see what terms would be acceptable in order for them to agree to any compacts to bring sports betting to Oklahoma but have not yet heard back.”Maybe this bill can be a bit of a push to say ‘Hey, you guys need to get this done.’ But it’s mainly there that if a compact can be agreed upon, then we have a law that we can turn to,” he said. Former coach and now State Senator Dave Rader is a big fan of bringing sports betting to Oklahoma and recently submitted a bill to do just that ahead of the legislative session. This is just the latest effort following several failed attempts to legalize the growing industry in the sooner state. Rader said efforts to pass sports betting so far have stalled because the executive branch hasn’t been able to come to any agreements with the tribes on compacts.”We’ve had almost a billion dollars in tax decreases in the last few years, you know, somewhere along the line, we need something to come back, because our state is continuing to grow. And this has a way to offer a little bit of tax revenue to come back to the state,” he said.

With just two weeks remaining in the 2025 regular reason, four Kentucky players were named in D1Baseball’s Week 12 Player Rankings.
Firstly, freshman shortstop Tyler Bell was ranked the highest at his position. In his first season of college baseball in the nation’s premier conference, Bell was ranked as the 17th best overall shortstop and best freshman shortstop in the country.
Bell, who has played and started in all 45 of Kentucky’s games, is hitting for a .315 batting average with 17 doubles, seven home runs and 42 RBI. He was named SEC Freshman of the Week earlier in the season and hit the second most doubles by a freshman in the country. He made a risky decision by bypassing Major League Baseball to play two seasons at Kentucky, but he is surely making the most of it and is likely increasing his draft stock for the 2026 Draft by the game.
Next, Kentucky had two of its three starting pitchers named among the top 60 starters in the country. Sophomore left-hander Ben Cleaver was ranked at No. 32 and senior right-hander Nic McCay was ranked at No. 59. Kentucky’s Saturday and Sunday starters have excelled this season, boasting a combined 3.49 ERA in 123 2/3 innings of work this season.

McCay turned in one of the best starts in Kentucky Baseball history earlier this season, as held No. 4 Tennessee to two hits and no runs with 12 strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings. He was named SEC Pitcher of the Week for his efforts, becoming just the seventh in the Mingione era to win the Award.
Cleaver was stellar this season as well, as his 3.46 ERA ranks 10th in the SEC. He took the sophomore leap in his second season of college baseball and became an extremely reliable start for his team, as the ‘Cats have won in seven of his 12 starts.
Finally, senior outfielder Cole Hage was ranked as the 40th best outfielder in all of college baseball. Although his best play may have come earlier in the season, Hage is still hitting for a .314 average with a team-leading 10 home runs and 33 RBI. Hage, who transferred from Columbia for his final season of eligibility, has been Kentucky’s most effective Transfer Portal pickup.
These four players will be back in action in a must-win series against No. 17 Oklahoma this weekend. First pitch for Friday’s series opener is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. EST at Kentucky Proud Park.

Trent Dilfer details how NIL resources dictate schemes available to coaches everywhere

The majority of the conversations around NIL and the transfer portal revolve around roster management and how coaches are structuring their support staff and structuring them similar to NFL front offices.
One aspect that NIL in particular has been impacting that has not gotten nearly the amount of headlines it deserves is how it is impacting schemes, especially at the Group of Five level.
While on the Blazer Victory Podcast recently, UAB head coach Trent Dilfer highlighted just how NIL directly impacts the schemes they’re able to run.
“There’s Bill Clark’s defense, which was awesome. ‘Mint’ defense. 2-gap. Punch and hold up. It’s a great way to play defense. It’s a problem to play against. I love that system. I hate playing against it.”
“But they were recruiting a different…it’s a different era now. Those guys are very expensive. To run that defense right now is probably about a $2 million and we have $1 million for the entire team.”
“So I would challenge any Mint defensive coach, I would ask ‘How are you going to pay for it? How are you going to find the 4i’s? How are you going to find the Jack?”
“The Jack position alone is a $750,000 player, right now. In our conference, he’s a 6’5+, 34-inch arms, 265-280 pounds, and can run, can cover, and can drop. Like he is a draftable player. That’s a $750,000 player in our conference. He’s $1.5 million in the Power Fours.”
“So yeah, it’s one thing as a fan to say ‘Why aren’t they playing Mint? Why are they a four-down team?’ Well, we all love Mint. I’d lvoe to play that defense. I can’t afford that defense. What we can afford is a four-down structure of eight or nine twitchy, explosive get-off guys that can slice-and-dice, create havoc in the backfield, create negative plays. Are we going to hold up like a brick wall in the run game? No. We’re not build to hold up like a brick wall in the run game, so you’ve got to stop the run in different ways.”
“See where I’m going with the ‘Moneyball’ analogy? You’ve only got so much money, and you’ve got to make it go the furthers.”
Dilfer, who UAB announced would return to lead the program for a third season back in December despite a 7-17 record since taking over following the late retirement of legendary Blazers coach Bill Clark just before the 2022 season (when Bryant Vincent was then tabbed to lead the program as interim head coach), now enters a critical fall where they open with two of three games at home. They’ll have Alabama State (FCS) and Akron at home with a game in between those two at Annapolis to take on Navy. Week four they will hit the road for Knoxville to take on the Vols before starting conference play.

Where IU football landed in ESPN’s 2025 post-spring practice too early rankings – The Daily Hoosier

With spring practice out of the way and majority of roster reconstructions complete, it’s time to look ahead to rankings for the 2025 football season.
Indiana was nowhere to be found in any preseason models last year — human or computer.
But after an 11-2 season that included an 8-1 Big Ten record and a CFP appearance, the perception of IU football has changed dramatically under the direction of second-year head coach Curt Cignetti.
ESPN’s Mark Schlabach published his “2025 post-spring Way-Too-Early Top 25 rankings” on Thursday and slotted Indiana in as the preseason No. 17 team. If IU is ranked in the preseason AP top-25 released in August, it will be their first appearance in that preseason poll since 2021, and just the third time since 1969.
Here’s what Schlabach wrote about Indiana:
2025 outlook: The Hoosiers stunned the college football world by reaching the CFP in coach Curt Cignetti’s first season. And they’ve gone back into the transfer portal to fill some holes to try to run it back. Fernando Mendoza was one of the top quarterbacks in the portal after throwing for 3,004 yards with 16 touchdowns in 2024. Three transfers could start on the offensive line, and Makai Jackson and California transfer Jonathan Brady should help a solid receiver corps.
Hosea Wheeler and Dominique Ratcliff will anchor the middle of the defensive line, and Mikail Kamara’s return was a big boost for the defense. It’s going to be difficult for Indiana to match last season’s success, but its nonconference schedule (Old Dominion, Kennesaw State and FCS program Indiana State) gives it a chance to get off to a good start.
The Hoosiers will face three ranked teams in 2025 according to the ESPN projection, and they are all in Schlabach’s top-11: No. 1 Penn State, No. 8 Oregon and No. 11 Illinois.
Indiana will go on the road to face No. 1 Penn State and No. 8 Oregon, along with an Iowa team likely not far from the top-25. And they’ll host No. 11 Illinois in the Big Ten opener in mid-September.
Joining those ranked teams from the Big Ten are the defending national champion Ohio State Buckeyes at No. 5. 2025 will mark the first time since 2008 that IU and Ohio State do not meet during the regular season.
Indiana’s full 2025 schedule is as follows:
Aug. 30 – Old Dominion
Sept. 6 – Kennesaw State
Sept. 13 – Indiana State
BIG TEN:
Sept. 20 – vs. Illinois
Sept. 27 – at Iowa
Oct. 11 – at Oregon
Oct. 18 – vs. Michigan State
Oct. 25 – vs. UCLA
Nov. 1 – at Maryland
Nov. 8 – at Penn State
Nov. 15 – vs. Wisconsin
Nov. 29 – at Purdue
