Salida had two looks off corners in the second half that, if they had scored one of, would have been back in the game, coach Heidi Slaymaker said. “In the second half we actually came out and played pretty well.”The Salida High School girl’s soccer team is still getting into their flow, after a 6-2 loss to the Vail Mountain Lady Gore Rangers March 25.The Lady Spartans kept fighting and held Vail off until 17:11. Vail scored and put it in the net twice more before senior Elle Farnsworth made a goal late in the game with around 12 minutes left. Vail’s defender passed to their goalie, but Farnsworth ran her down and took the ball from her. Farnsworth said of the game, “It was pretty difficult. We’ve had a slow start to the season, but we worked hard.”Farnsworth added they need to work on their fitness and working together as a team.Neither team scored in the first 10 minutes or so, but Vail finally put the ball in. Sophomore Skya Gorby made a penalty kick 21 minutes in to tie the score 1-1. Vail scored again at 18:28 and shot one into the corner at 15:02 to keep their lead 3-1 going into halftime.The team plays Crested Butte March 26 at home at 4:30 p.m. and Leadville at home March 29 at 11 a.m.Slaymaker said, “The girls worked for each other, they worked hard … but there’s no flow yet … We just ran out of gas.”Haynes said going forward, “We need to get more energy and more pumped up.” Sophomore Sophie Haynes said, “I think we did really good for our first game.” She said her favorite moment was Gorby’s penalty kick.
