“I fell in love in sports in high school playing football. The coaches and my teammates just held me accountable and taught me life lessons about working as a team and making friendships. It was a big deal to me.”

What made you fall in love with basketball?
“I was the only white guy on my team, so I learned a lot about other cultures and how to play. I really enjoyed hanging out with the guys. You get a lot of life lessons by playing sports: accountability, putting in work, etc. I think that’s kind of the foundations for how I go about daily life.”
Garrett Machado, sophomore biology major
What made you fall in love with track and cross country?
“I’m gonna be real with y’all. As a child like, six, seven years old, I had too much energy. I was hopping off my parents’ couches, and they were like, ‘you need to do some sports.’ They put me in track, and I was like, ‘Why not? I’ll do it.’ That’s how I ran all my energy away and now I do cross country.”

What made you fall in love with roller derby?
“I started going to a skating class this semester. My coach handed me a flyer on the first day, and was like, ‘Hey, you should come try out for roller derby, it would be really fun.’ And I did and I made the team. Since then, the women who surround me are extremely strong and capable and it’s really enjoyable.”
Caleb Bayer, junior neuroscience major
What made you fall in love with football?
“My dad. You know, hanging out with him, watching football a lot when I was younger. You always want dad’s approval. So I kind of correlated those things, and by the time I knew it I loved the games.”
“Not as much as now. I was always a soccer guy really.”
Abhinav Burju, sophomore neuroscience and business double-major
What made you fall in love with frisbee?
“When I first came to Trinity, I’d never thrown a Frisbee before. I showed up to the first practice, and I was like, ‘How do you throw a Frisbee?’ But the more I played it, the more I started to love it. Frisbee is all about throwing yourself at the disc, and I love the feeling of flying in the air and coming down with it. I love the energy of the sport … It’s an intense sport, and I loved that intensity from the get go.”
“I grew up around it. My family was a really big soccer family, and I just loved the relationships it gave me. It gave me some of my closest friends, both growing up and here at college. I just love being out there, it’s a great escape from everything else.”
Jonathan Kahn, first-year finance major

What made you fall in love with soccer?
“I was a tennis player first, and I noticed that I was not liking it anymore. Every time I would get upset with it I would not want to play anymore, and I would go and play soccer with my friends. I realized that that was a better outlet for me. Then I started playing, and even when I would get upset, it was more like a drive, rather than just not liking the sport anymore. … I realized as I went on that soccer was my happy place.”
Claire de Silva-Yost, sophomore political science major
What made you fall in love with water polo?
“Being a lifeguard here, I had the shift with the water polo team. I ended up just jumping in and falling in love with the people, especially our coach, Steven, who’s not even from Trinity. Steven would try to get you to get in no matter what, he even joked about getting my roommate into a relationship with somebody on the team, just to get them to play water polo. If anyone comes into the vicinity of the pool, he’ll be like, ‘My name’s Steven, I want you to play water polo with us.’ So that’s it. I just fell in love with the people.”
