SJSU Hires Jonas Chatterton as Women's Basketball Coach

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Jonas Chatterton will lead the San José State women’s basketball program as the 11th head coach in school history, announced by Director of Athletics Jeff Konya on Friday. Chatterton brings over 24 years of Division I coaching experience, a deep legacy of player development, and a history of success at some of the nation’s most competitive programs.

“Jonas’ basketball acumen really stood out during this national search,” said Konya. “His passion for mentoring student-athletes, his commitment to excellence in academics, competition, and community make him the ideal leader to guide our program into a new era. I want to thank Herb Courtney and Adam Gordon from Renaissance Search Firm for their assistance in identifying some strong candidates for our vacancy.”

Chatterton most recently served as associate head coach at the University of Oklahoma, where he played a key role in program strategy, recruiting, and athlete performance. The Sooners advanced to the Sweet 16 this past season, falling to eventual national champion UConn.

Before OU, Chatterton spent a decade at Oregon State University, helping guide the Beavers to the 2016 Final Four, multiple Elite Eights, and three Pac-12 regular season titles. His coaching résumé includes successful stints at Colorado, BYU, and Westminster College. Chatterton’s teams have produced a cumulative record of 501-237 with an impressive .679 winning percentage.

“I am very excited and honored to be the new leader for the women’s basketball program at San José State University,” said Chatterton. “I want to thank Athletics Director Jeff Konya, President Cynthia Teniente-Matson, and Renaissance Search Firm for believing in me. I have had the tremendous opportunity to work at some great programs and with some of the best coaches in the country, which has led me to this great opportunity. We will build a culture that all Spartans will be proud of.”

Throughout his career, Chatterton has coached numerous All-Americans, including conference players and freshmen of the year, and has consistently helped teams reach postseason play, including multiple Sweet 16 and NCAA Tournament appearances.

Chatterton holds a Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Sport Science from the University of Utah and has been recognized nationally, including participation in Nike’s prestigious Villa 7 Consortium for top assistant coaches, and was named one of the 2023 50 Most Impactful High Major Assistants by Silver Ways Media.

Chatterton has four children: daughters Josie, Celia, and Jada, and a son, Hudson.

What they are saying…

“I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Jonas at Colorado and Oklahoma, and I couldn’t be more excited for him as he begins this next chapter as the head coach at San José State. Jonas is an incredible basketball mind, a relentless worker, and a coach who truly connects with and invests in his players. His impact on our program here at Oklahoma in just one year as associate head coach was remarkable. San José State is getting a tremendous leader and an even better person.”

  • Jennie Baranczyk, Head Coach, Women’s Basketball, Oklahoma

For many years, I have faced off against Jonas and his teams from the opposing sideline. I have always found him to be prepared, to have incredible scouting reports, and to be a part of winning programs. As a recruiter, I have known Jonas to be great with young people and incredibly hardworking. I think San José State nailed it with this hire, and I look forward to watching Jonas succeed in the Bay.”

  • Lindsay Gottlieb, Head Coach, Women’s Basketball, USC

“Congratulations to San José State University on a fantastic hire in Jonas. He is a rising star in our profession and will no doubt have the program competing for Mountain West championships in the near future. With his basketball acumen and work ethic in recruiting, I’m excited to follow the future success of the Spartans.”

  • Kevin McGuff, Head Coach, Women’s Basketball, Ohio State

Seeing a coach who has worked their way to the head coaching chair is good for women’s basketball. Jonas has fulfilled every role an assistant could ever be asked to do. He’s swept floors and he’s coordinated defenses. He’s done laundry and he’s drawn game-winning sets. No one knows more than he that being a good assistant doesn’t guarantee success as a head coach. Knowing that will help him navigate those times when experience can’t have you prepared. He has built and maintained an amazing network that will be there for him, even though he won’t need it often. San José State got a good one today!”

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN seniors Dorottya Telek and Anna Pal closed their respective collegiate careers with All-America Honorable Mention accolades on Friday, as announced the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches.

Both natives of Budapest, Hungary, Telek and Pal join Marisa Young (2012-15) as the only four-time All-Americans in CSUN Water Polo history.

“When I met Dodi (Telek) and Nusi (Pal) six years ago I never would have thought in my wildest dreams they’d have such prolific careers at CSUN,” said head coach Matt Warshaw. “They have exceeded every expectation, both in and out of the pool and are true Matadors. Leaving here with multiple degrees, four-time All-American selections, re-writing the record books, countless memories and lifelong friendships are more than all three of us could have hoped for.”

Telek’s fourth All-American award caps an exceptional and historic Matador career. She would lead the Big West for a fourth consecutive season in goals while shattering her own single-season record with a remarkable 104 goals on an efficient 58.1 percent shooting. Named to the All-Big West Second Team, Telek would also lead CSUN with 18 field blocks and 88 exclusions drawn while ranking second on the team in assists (45) and steals (47). In addition, the senior center scored once in at least 26 of 29 matches and recorded multiple-goal efforts 23 times.

Telek leaves CSUN as the all-time record holder in career goals with 376 (147 more than second place). She also holds the Matador record for career field goal percentage (.537) and exclusions drawn (367) and ranks fifth in field blocks (61). On the single-season goals list, Telek is ranked first (104, 2025), second (101, 2023), third (84, 2024) and fifth (77, 2022) in CSUN history. She is also the record holder for the most goals in a single game with nine, which she reached on three separate occasions in her career.

Pal would have another outstanding season in the pool, recording a career-high and a Big West-best 67 assists. An All-Big West Honorable Mention, the senior led the Matadors with a personal-best 51 steals while she was second on the team in goals scored at 59 and points at 126. Pal scored once in 23 of 29 total matches and finished with 20 multiple-scoring games.

Pal also made Matador history this season by breaking the program’s all-time assist record and finishing with 209 total helpers. On the scoring side, Pal moved up to sixth place on CSUN’s all-time career goals list with 200 tallies while she climbed into ninth place on the field blocks list (34). Pal will also forever be known as the founding member of the 200-goal and 200-assist club in school history, reaching the milestone in the Matadors’ final match of the season.

RIO DI JANEIRO – Texas A&M volleyball’s Logan Lednicky was named to the U.S. Women’s National Team for the Volleyball Nations League, the organization announced Friday.

Lednicky joins a star-studded group of 14 athletes to represent the United States in Brazil for the first round of pool play for the Volleyball Nations League. The team traveling to Rio will play four matches versus Italy, Brazil, Czech Republic and South Korea.

“The past few weeks training in the USA gym has been such an amazing learning experience for me,” Lednicky said. “I am so blessed to be chosen for week one of VNL and can’t wait to represent the U.S. on an international stage for the first time.”

This will be Lednicky’s first time representing the Red, White and Blue at an international competition, and she is the first Aggie since Stacy Sykora in 2011 to compete for the U.S. Senior National Team.

“I couldn’t be prouder of Logan for being named to the U.S. Women’s National Team’s VNL roster,” head coach Jamie Morrison said. “Having spent time on the international stage, I know how special and formative that experience can be. Logan has earned this opportunity through relentless hard work, humility and an unwavering competitive spirit. Now the rest of the world gets to see what we’ve known at Texas A&M—she’s ready for this moment.”

Lednicky is coming off an outstanding junior campaign, as she was named an AVCA Second Team All-American and guided the team to its first NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 berth since 2019. She capped off the year with the second-highest kills per set total (4.47) and third-highest kill total (492) in a single season in A&M history during the rally-scoring era. The Sugar Land, Texas, native recorded 20+ kills in eight matches last season, including three straight in the Maroon & White’s three NCAA Tournament fixtures, a feat only two athletes in the tournament accomplished.

Volleyball Nations League is the world’s premier annual international indoor volleyball tournament. The top 16 teams in the world play four matches a week for three weeks of preliminary competition. The top eight teams at the end of the preliminaries will go to the final round.
