A Portuguese man has been arrested in Tías, Lanzarote, for severely assaulting a British tourist in an incident that has left the victim in hospital with critical injuries. The arrest, carried out by the Local Police on Wednesday (January 2nd), followed a violent altercation on the Avenida de las Playas.
Eyewitnesses described how the situation escalated after the verbal exchange, culminating in the Portuguese man punching one of the British holidaymakers. The force of the blow caused the victim to fall heavily to the ground and bang his head.
Medical assessments revealed the tourist suffered a traumatic brain injury with a critical prognosis, fractures to the orbital and maxillary bones, and lacerations to the back of the head that required several stitches.
According to police reports, the incident began as a verbal dispute when the assailant, riding a skateboard along a designated cycle lane, encountered two British pedestrians walking in the same space, violating its intended use.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns over the shared use of public spaces and the need for vigilance to prevent such confrontations from escalating into violence. The authorities have not yet released further details about the detained individual or whether additional legal actions are pending.
The injured tourist is currently hospitalised in a critical condition at Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital. Due to the severity of his injuries, medical teams are considering transferring him to a specialist facility in Gran Canaria for further treatment.
