Ski Patrol at Elk Mountain says if you’re going to go out on the slopes, make sure you layer up, cover up your ski, and monitor yourself and others for signs of frostbite, including gray or yellowish patches on exposed skin.

“After four or five runs, go in, warm up a little bit, go back out. Snow stays better when it’s cold like this, the crowds are using a little less. It’s a lot more enjoyable than when it’s warm,” said Bob Bluff, Ski Patrol Director, Elk Mountain.
Elk Mountain is open every day as long as the conditions are right and is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Christmas Day.
Skiiers are fond of the pairing, too.
Skiers took to the slopes on Sunday to make use of the chilly weather.
SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY, Pa. — The combination of single-digit temperatures and sunshine on the slopes is one the folks at Elk Mountain Ski Resort near Union Dale in Susquehanna County like to see.
“You got my hand warmers, got my double layers on, so gotta come prepared. Definitely want to cover up my face. Don’t want to get any wind burn. It is cold. And it is windy, so there’s always a chance of that with these temperatures,” said Rette.
There are safety measures to keep in mind, too.
But know that even though the sub-freezing temperatures come with some perks, “I mean, it’s cold, but it’s sunny, and it’s it’s a great time to be here. Pre-Christmas, crowds are smaller, so once we get past Christmas, later this week, I think the crowds will be larger. If you want to come out and enjoy some less crowded conditions, now’s the time to do it, or any or in anything midweek,” said DeLuca.
“Love skiing. Elk Mountain’s the best in Northeast Pennsylvania, so I love getting out here and enjoying it,” said Rette Bevins, Wapwallopen.
“We’re making snow whenever it’s cold, and when it’s cold like this, we really get some, some great yield when up from the water that we’re using for snow,” said Bob DeLuca, Elk Mountain Ski Resort.
As well as frostbite.
