HOUGHTON, Mich. – After a weekend off, the Michigan Tech Nordic ski teams will race at the St. Scholastica CCSA Invitational in Duluth, Minnesota this weekend (Feb. 1-2). The Huskies will race classic on Saturday and freestyle on Sunday.
“We had some great training opportunities with the bye week,” Head Coach Tom Monahan Smith said. “We have a really nice schedule this year with some bye weeks built in between competitions. We’ve been able to get some recovery in and we’ve been able to put in some high-volume training which is going to help us sustain our competitive fitness throughout the season.”
Spirit Mountain Nordic Center comprises the snowmaking loops (previously Grand Avenue Nordic Center), the upper connector trail and the Upper Spirit Trail system, approximately 30K total. The Saint Scholastica Invite will take place on the snowmaking loops at the base of the alpine hill.
“We’ve competed at this facility for a few years and have a lot of familiarity with how to race the course this weekend and with the rest of our CCSA season,” added Monahan smith. “Every race format is the same from here on out, so it gives us the opportunity to hone in on how to compete our best in the specific format. We need to approach every race like it’s a championship-level race and that’ll help us later in the season.”
Saturday’s individual start 7.5K classic will be three loops on a 2.5K course. The men will start at 10 a.m. Central followed by the women’s race at 11:30.
Sunday’s 20K mass start freestyle will be eight loops of 2.5K. The women go out first at 9:30 a.m. Central followed by the men at 11:30 a.m.
The Huskies lead the CCSA Regular Season Team Standings in the overall, men’s, and women’s categories after the first four events. Tech is above NMU by five points in the overall, one point in the men’s standings, and four in the women’s standings.
