The fanbases at Ohio State and Notre Dame are among the largest in the country. That creates problems for those looking to score tickets to the natty.
On the Saturday after the vaunted teams punched their own tickets to the game, the price for fans to watch the historic matchup live at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta ranged between ,850 to ,000 on the resale ticket market. Similarly, Montz says people shouldn’t pay for tickets with gift cards or peer to peer money transfer apps like Venmo, or Zell, or CashApp. Even using a debit card can make it difficult to recover your money if you do end up with a fake ticket.Montz says both Ohio State and Notre Dame have a list of safe and verified ticket sources on their websites that people should reference before looking for tickets.ATLANTA — With two of the most celebrated football programs in history playing each other for the college football national championship on Monday January 20, the price of tickets is already in the stratosphere.
WTOL 11 spoke with Lane Montz from the Better Business Bureau of Northwest Ohio, West Central Ohio, and Southeast Michigan, who offered some tips to protect yourself from being scammed.
Rather, Montz says people should use credit cards that have a dispute resolution process through which charges can be reversed.
“Tho schools’ athletic department websites will list those verified ticket sellers. Buying tickets second hand, or on Ebay, or websites that are not part of the authorized network for the school, there’s going to be some risk associated with it,” said Montz.
Montz says the best way to protect yourself is to not pay for your ticket with cash.
So how do you protect yourself?
Even if you use one of these sources however, it is important to make sure you aren’t looking at a copycat website designed to fool you into thinking you are buying genuine tickets.
“In the event that you do get a fake ticket or a barcode that’s already been used for a different game and they just fraudulently changed how the ticket appears; if you’ve paid in those ways, you can’t get your money back. It’s going to be very hard to get your money back, if not impossible,” said Montz. “If you pay with a credit card, there, there’ll be a dispute resolution process and you can get the charges reversed and that’s a big help.
The most important thing is to do what you can to protect yourself before you lay out a big chunk of change. With such high demand and limited supply, fake ticket scams are bound to be rampant.
“You are never going to eliminate all the risk but you can give yourself an avenue of relief or remedy in the sad event that you do happen to buy fake tickets.”
