SMU auctioning goal posts after huge victory over Miami
DALLAS — Following an upset win over No. 10 Miami this Saturday, SMU fans wasted no time before rushing the field at Gerald J. Ford Stadium and breaking down one of the goal posts for a celebratory walk-through on campus.
The 26-20 overtime win came a week after SMU lost to Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. After a 1-yard rushing touchdown from T.J. Harden secured the Mustangs their first ranked win of the season, SMU students immediately launched a rowdy celebration, storming the field and pouring into the endzone where Harden scored.
The base of the goal post, which couldn’t be dislodged, was all the remained as students paraded the upright portions out of the stadium and through campus. The goal posts were eventually thrown into the fountain at Dallas Hall, according to The Dallas Morning News’ Lia Assimakopoulos.
SMU faces a $50,000 fine for the fans storming the field, which violated the ACC’s newly updated security policy. However, SMU President Jay Hartzell said it is a price he is willing to pay.
“I neither condone nor support it, for the record, but I’ll pay the fine…,” Hartzell said on X shortly after the game.
To keep the celebration going, the SMU Mustang Club is now offering fans the opportunity to take home a piece of the history. SMU’s official athletic support organization is auctioning off 6-inch and 10-inch pieces of the goal post with bids ranging from $1,500 to $3,000. There are eight pieces of each size available, and bids will close Nov. 12.
While the Mustangs’ loss to Wake Forest will make it unlikely for the team to return to the AP rankings, their win against Miami puts them back in contention for a spot in the ACC championship game.
The Mustangs’ will face the Boston College Eagles next Saturday, Nov. 8, at Boston College.
