Soccer in school? Alexandria City schools to host special PE classes for its 2nd graders

With soccer continuing to grow in popularity across the United States, one D.C.-area school district is set to pilot a program in which elite-level coaches will teach the sport during its physical education classes.

Starting this fall, more than 1,300 second graders at all 14 elementary schools in Alexandria City Public Schools will receive soccer lessons from professional soccer coaches for two weeks. Called “Soccer IN School,” the training program will be a part of the student’s PE classes, thanks to a $200,000 grant over three years given by the U.S. Soccer Federation.

The coaches will come from the Alexandria Soccer Association, which provides youth recreational and club-level opportunities for children in the Virginia city.

Johnatan Nunez, the soccer association’s outreach and school programs manager, told WTOP that the students will be introduced to referees and the rules of the sport.

Students will receive a “Soccer Skills Challenge” packet with a soccer ball, jersey and information on continuing to play the sport through the organization’s recreational or academy programs.

“Some kids may have never played soccer before. Some kids have played soccer all their lives. It’s the sport they only know,” Nunez said. He hopes students come in “with an open mind and being ready to learn something new, and in the end, just feel excited about getting to play the sport.”

Since the soccer lessons are part of regular PE classes, no additional forms or permissions will be required. The coaches’ visits will be spread out throughout the academic year so each school will have equal time.

According to a news release, the PE teacher will also participate in the classes while receiving special training from the U.S. Soccer coaching education program.

In addition to the second graders receiving the lessons, ACPS Health and PE Instructional Specialist Kristin Donley said the rest of the student body will also benefit.

“They will also be giving the PE teachers as sort of a curriculum guide or a unit guide that can be adapted to other grade levels too,” she said of the Alexandria Soccer Association.

The school system and ASA already have a partnership, with the soccer organization hosting multiple after-school clinics and some PE takeovers at different schools throughout the year. Now, with the grant, Nunez said that their relationship will be strengthened with more specific programming for students in an age range who desire more structure in their athletics.

“We want to professionalize it and make it kind of more of a standard where we’re at every school every year, and it’s something that even beyond the three years we want to continue to do,” Nunez said.

Katie Brooks of the Alexandria Soccer Association said the classes and how they are phased into Alexandria City schools would also become a model for how U.S. Soccer would like to carry similar programs in other districts around the country.

“We know this would be scaled nationwide,” Brooks said. “And so, we’re going to do the best we can do here to kick things off.”

For some students, it will be their first time participating in the sport. However, Donley said the coaches will devise kid-friendly drills that focus on more than just their soccer-playing abilities.

“Helping students build their confidence and their team building skills and working with others, and the cooperation piece,” she said. “It’s not just about soccer; it’s about all of those other pieces as well.”

The grant also pays for player appearances during the sessions. With the D.C. region home to multiple professional and semipro teams, the opportunities of bringing someone that will motivate the students are endless, Donley said. She would prefer someone local who may have gone through the ACPS system to be brought in.

Nunez agreed but said the opportunity for students to meet their hero and even get an autograph could motivate a child to continue pursuing their soccer dreams. He quickly named Washington Spirit star Trinity Rodman as a potential option, telling WTOP the forward and any of her teammates are welcome to spend time with the students.

“We would love to have her come out and encourage our girls to (see) how big they can be in the world,” Nunez said.

Albizu University is proud to announce the launch of Intercollegiate Athletics with men’s and women’s soccer teams at its Miami Campus, with competition to begin in Fall 2025. The university initiated the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ (NAIA) Pathways to Membership process, enhancing student life and furthering its mission to promote academic and personal growth through inclusive excellence.

“This is a transformational step forward for our Miami Campus,” said Dr. Yianni Vassiliou, Chancellor of Albizu University’s Miami Campus. “Adding intercollegiate athletics—beginning with men’s and women’s soccer—supports our commitment to expanding student engagement, enhancing campus vibrancy, and growing enrollment in a mission-aligned and sustainable way.”

The proposed program anticipates recruiting an initial cohort of 30 student-athletes, supported by a targeted scholarship program and athletic director and coaching staff, with plans for expansion in subsequent years. The initiative complements Albizu’s degrees and academic focus in psychology, health, education, and community-centered professions, drawing from South Florida’s strong soccer culture and demand for mental health, education, behavioral sciences, and culturally responsive education.

Albizu’s administration has identified local field partnerships and a clear implementation timeline, including coaching staff and launching outreach this spring. Juan Carlos (JC) Gonzalez has been hired as the Athletic Director and Men’s & Women’s Head Soccer Coach. The university projects significant enrollment growth from the program, with expectations to double the impact through future athletic offerings.

Horse Creek Academy soccer players sign to college program

AIKEN — Tyler Simpkins and Dominic James first met while playing pee-wee football .

And now the pair will play for the same college soccer team after signing to continue their athletic careers at Columbia International University on May 20.

“Since like ninth grade, just showing up every practice, just the grind that you have,” James said. “And then it all pays off when you finally get that text or that message saying, ‘Hey, we want you to come out.’ It all sums up to something. So just the grind, that’s what it was really.”

The Horse Creek Academy seniors have been the core of the school’s up-and-coming soccer program since it started when they were freshmen. Head coach Adam Lambert said it was their passion for the sport that reignited his love for the game when he was brought on to coach the group.

“It’s amazing the amount of pride I have for these two,” he said. “No one has worked harder in the four years that we’ve had. They’ve only improved themselves. They started from …pretty much an entry level. They’ve done nothing but work in the off-season, in the season, to better themselves. They show up to every practice. I knew they were going to be college athletes. I really did. ”

The pair are more like brothers than teammates, and Simpkins said they always knew they wanted to pick a team they could play together on. Columbia International is a faith-based private school, which was another major factor in their decision to call it home in the fall.

They’ll also both be majoring in sports management.

“For me, it was the Christian aspect of the school,” Simpkins said. “And as someone with faith, that was just a big part of it. And, you know, to further my soccer career, it’s just an amazing thing and I’m so grateful that God is allowing me to do that.”

When thinking about the moments that made the biggest impact for James and Simpkins during their high school careers, two games stood out the most: the Stallions’ first team win and their first playoff victory this year against Lewisville.

Lambert said that as a coach, he’ll never forget the look on Simpkins’ face after they won their first game as a new team and the focus that James brought to the field from day one.

“It was the first game we won in our first game of the high school season,” Simpkins said. “That was something that really jumped the love for the game for me, and this playoff run we had our last few weeks. That was an amazing, amazing experience. Bus rides with the team, winning a playoff game, something that a couple years ago we would’ve never dreamed of. And so to do that with them, even though we didn’t make it all the way, just to experience that with them, something, just 20, 30 years down the line, you still remember that. And that was just an amazing feeling. That’s some of the memories that I’ll take with me for the rest of my life.”

In their final year as Stallions, they helped to lead the team to a region championship during their first year in Region 3-A with an 11-7 record and made their first playoff run, which ended in the second round.

As they prepare to transition to the next phase of their athletic and academic lives, the two are prepared to continue growing side by side while motivating each other to keep achieving new goals.

“The one thing I know I’ll do for him is I’ll make sure to push him whenever he needs it,” James said. “I’ll make sure he grows as much as I try to improve myself. And we’re just going to go down this journey. We’re going to as teammates, as brothers, we’re just going to try to see if we can get where we want to go.”

ROCHELLE — Fernando Diaz experienced both physical and mental growth throughout his four years with the Rochelle Hub soccer program. Playing all four years at the varsity level, Diaz saw his confidence and his physicality on the field increase as he gained more valuable experience.

That growth resulted in Diaz earning a key leadership role as a starting forward during his senior season, when he posted a career-high 16 goals while serving as a team captain for the Hubs, who won 12 games during the fall. Diaz, who concluded his four-year varsity career at RTHS with 33 goals and 13 assists, will continue his academics and athletics at Kishwaukee College.

“I chose Kish because it’s close to home and I will develop into a more confident and intelligent player,” Diaz said. “Playing soccer at Rochelle taught me to be confident in my decisions and to always push to be better. I’d say I improved in being more physical during my time at Rochelle because I always felt smaller than my opponents, so I had to adjust and be more physical.”

Diaz, whose twin brother Francisco also played four years of varsity soccer at RTHS, scored his first career varsity goals as a freshman in 2021. Diaz, who played midfield and forward during his time with the Hubs, enjoyed a breakout sophomore season in 2022, when he scored nine goals (third most on the team) and dished out four assists (tied for third most). Diaz said he intends to earn his associate’s degree at Kish and pursue a career as a physical therapist.

“I’m looking forward to making more connections with not only the people around me, but hopefully other universities to play for because it’s a dream of mine,” said Diaz, whose two older brothers, Alexis Bueno and Sergio Magallon, both played soccer at Kishwaukee College. “What swayed me to Kish was my brothers’ experiences with the program. I’m hoping that I can help and improve in the midfield and possess the ball. I want to get better at playing with IQ.”

Diaz scored seven goals and led the Hubs with seven assists during his junior season, when he became a team captain for the first time in his career. Diaz kept the captain’s badge as a senior in 2024, helping Rochelle bounce back from a five-win season in 2023. Diaz, who earned an Interstate 8 All-Conference award in 2024, will reunite with teammate Alberto Casillas at Kish.
