WORCESTER, Mass. – Brown Softball (10-6) swept a doubleheader against Holy Cross (4-15) on Sunday (March 16). The Bears came out on top in game one, 2-0, before picking up another victory over the Crusaders, 5-4.

BROWN 2, HOLY CROSS 0
The Bears hit early against Holy Cross to secure their first win of the day.

In the top of the first, Kaicee Klus walked to kick off the game. Laurel Moody then singled through the left side, advancing Klus to second. With two outs, a walk to Alexis Guevara advanced Moody to second and Klus to third.

With the bases loaded, Cameron Zytkewicz Ray singled, allowing Moody and Klus to score.

That was all the Bears would need as Brown got another phenomenal start from Guevara (5-2). The senior threw her second-straight complete game shutout, allowing five hits, four walks and striking out four batters. Guevara is now up to 27-straight innings with just one earned run allowed.

BROWN 5, HOLY CROSS 4
Brown took the second game for a clean sweep over Holy Cross. Abby Bettencourt led the Bears with three of Brown’s five runs and Amanda Deng went 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Bettencourt picked up her first in the top of the fourth, doubling to right center and advancing to third on a passed ball before finally stealing home. Deng then tripled to right field, followed by a walk from Elli Thompson. Following a groundout, Thompson advanced to second and Deng scored to bring the Bears to a 2-0 lead heading into the fifth inning.

The Bears picked up two more in the top of the fifth. Liv Kam entered the game as a pinch runner for Cameron Zytkewicz Ray. Kam scored following a single from Bettencourt, who advanced to third on a fielding error. A center field single from Deng was enough to get Bettencourt home, bringing Brown lead to 4-0

The Crusaders got on the board one time in both the fifth and sixth innings. The Bears bumped their lead by one in the top of the seventh. Bettencourt was hit by a pitch before Deng doubled down the left field line, scoring Bettencourt.

The score sat at 5-2 in Brown’s favor heading into the bottom of the seventh. Holy Cross cracked two more in the final inning to bring them back within striking distance, but ultimately the Bears were able to remain on top.

Annie Finch (1-0) picked up her first win of the season throwing four scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out one.
