With pressure building around her, Patterson kept her side in the contest, proving a cool head and stable presence at the crease. Persistent running and skilful use of her hands allowed Patterson to utilise gaps in the field. Her dismissal, whilst causing a brief concern for the South Australians, came too late for the hosts, with the damage already having been done.
The late wickets of Price (5) and Schutt (1) threatened to enact a final act twist, however, in the end, the chase was always within reach for the enterprising batting of the visitors.
The visitors’ run chase was masterfully led by the captain Bridget Patterson (90), with contributions from de Broughe (66), Penna (30), and Wellington (18*) seeing the run chase home with just a ball to spare.
Penna continued on from her career best figures on Friday to snag a further 4 wickets, with her wrist spin proving too much for the NSW middle order. Despite the big partnership for the 2nd wicket, the beginning of the bowling innings was dominated by Courtney Neale (2-30), whose use of swing troubled the batters earlier.
South Australia have beaten New South Wales by 2 wickets in a final over thriller at Cricket Central.
South Australia will play Western Australia at the WACA Ground on 19 Feb from 12:30pm ACDT.
The result sees the result of the two matches end 1-1, with NSW having successfully defended a total on Friday.
A big partnership by New South Wales batters Tahlia Wilson (72) and Anika Learoyd (71), set a solid foundation for the home side, guiding the Breakers to 1-142. However, a Maddy Penna (4-40) led collapse of 7-68 brought South Australia back into the game.
Tight bowling from the home side ballooned the required run rate near 9 when Penna was dismissed in the 43rd over. Adams (1-44) and Johnson (3-37) strangled the middle order and wrestled control of the game well within the reach of NSW.
A 3rd wicket partnership of 76 set the chase up for South Australia, after the loss of some early wickets, as Patterson and de Broughe punished loose deliveries, finding the boundary on a regular basis. However, the momentum didn’t stay with the visitors for long, with constricting field sets and cutters slowing the positive intent of the batters.
Earlier, Bridget Patterson continued her unlucky streak at the coin toss, failing to call correctly as South Australia were sent into the field.
Late innings contributions by Johnson (30), Bray (19), and Cheatle (13*), allowed for NSW to achieve their total of 242.
