HAMMOND, La. –The Southeastern Louisiana University women’s tennis team opened the spring portion of its 2024-25 schedule with a 5-2 victory over LSU Alexandria Saturday afternoon at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
All seven starters for Southeastern (1-0) won in either singles or doubles play. The Lions won two of three doubles matches, while also winning four of six singles matches to take down LSU-A (0-1) in the spring opener for both teams.
“We knew this was going to be a tough match,” Southeastern head tennis coach Jason Hayes commented. “LSU-A fights for each point, so we couldn’t risk being the slightest bit off. We have a talented team and if we can raise our on-court focus moving forward, we’ll start to build confidence and get things rolling.”
Southeastern started the day by taking a 1-0 lead in doubles. On court 1, Bente Bierma and Panatchakorn Suanarsa handled LSU-A’s Nahia Echaide and Joline Roesch, 6-1. The Lion duo of Taisia Bolsova and Bogi Csordas earned a 6-4 win over Belen Blasco and Isabella Stuurman on court 3 to clinch the doubles point.
“We looked good in doubles,” Hayes said. “I was really pleased with our activity at the net.”
Saturday saw a pair of Lions win in straight sets in singles play. Leana Gomez was too much for Echaide in a 6-3, 7-5 victory on the top singles court. At No. 4, Claudia Di Leonardo rolled past Stuurman, 6-4, 6-1.
At the bottom of the singles draw, SLU rallied for a pair of three-set wins to close out the win. In her dual match debut, Lion freshman Aitana Darder overcame Blasco, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) on No. 5, while on No. 6, Bolsova moved past Roesch, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
“Leana and Claudia got us off to a great start in singles play,” Hayes stated. “Aitana and Taisia being able to come back from a set down is a testament to the level of fight they play with.”
Saturday’s match was the first of four straight home contests for the Lions to start the spring slate. UL Lafayette visits Tuesday for a 1 p.m. match at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
