Sports medicine specialists gathered in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, with the objective of enhancing the health and athletic performance of professional athletes, as well as investigating areas of advanced practice within their field of expertise.

In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Nigeria Association of Sports Medicine (NASMED), the organization held a two-day symposium themed: “Charting a New Path for Sports Medicine in Nigeria.”

The organization seeks to transform sports medicine in the nation by concentrating on vital aspects of the practice, including the connection between physical activity and health, as well as the implementation of scientific research to improve the health and overall wellbeing of professional athletes.

While reflecting on NASMED’s progress as a leading professional entity since its inception, the association’s President, Dr. Olajide Adebola, stated that it was established to create an independent platform for practitioners in sports medicine.

According to him, the association has evolved into a multidisciplinary force, uniting experts that range from sports physicians to psychologists and more in the field.

Dr. Olajide Adebola emphasized, “As an association, we are dedicated to collaborating with relevant organizations to build a comprehensive sports ecosystem, integrating sports physiotherapy, psychology, nutrition, and other essential fields to ensure a larger pool of professionals in these areas, as we currently lack sufficient skilled practitioners across Nigeria.”

He highlighted the importance of addressing the needs of two groups of athletes: elite athletes striving for recognition and podium finishes, and recreational athletes visiting fitness and wellness centers.

Engr. Habu Gumel, President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, also addressed the gathering, expressing his commitment to enhancing the association’s capacity to support athletes across various sports.

“What we are undertaking here is truly meaningful, and it is crucial to advance this initiative throughout Nigeria.”

The NOC President guaranteed his dedication to ensuring that both Olympic and non-Olympic sports receive the focus they require.

“This seminar holds particular significance as it raises awareness of NASMED’s work and its nationwide impact, and I extend my full support.”

He assured the association that the Nigeria Olympic Committee will continue to support it as it develops and enhances its ability to assist athletes, promote a culture of learning, and contribute to the overall growth of the country.

Sports medicine involves medical and paramedical oversight of athletes during training and competitions, aimed at preventing and treating injuries that may occur during physical activities.

Since the revival of the Olympic Games in 1896 and the subsequent rise in sports participation and training, it has become crucial to not only prevent and treat sports-related injuries but also to advance scientific understanding of human performance limits and fatigue causes.
