St. Ignatius hires next boys basketball coach

CLEVELAND, Ohio — It took only three weeks for St. Ignatius to find its successor to Cam Joyce.

The school announced Thursday afternoon that Tom Parker will be its next boys basketball coach.

With the selection, the Wildcats bring back an alum who previously served under Joyce and is a 2010 graduate of the school.

“This is a dream come true. I am so grateful for the opportunity to lead this great program,” Parker said in a press release from St. Ignatius. “Coach Cam left some big shoes to fill. I don’t think it’s my job to be like Cam, but it is my job to sustain the success of this program and continue having us play at an elite level. I am excited to help these kids grow through the game of basketball.”

He spent a year as Euclid’s coach and served on Joyce’s staff before and after that stint, elevating both the freshman and junior varsity programs. He played for former coaches Brian Becker and Sean O’Toole, then went on to play at Lake Erie College.

Parker returned to St. Ignatius for the 2023-24 season, when the Wildcats won their first Division I state championship in 20 years. He served as director of player development and now will become the school’s 25th head coach for the varsity team. He also will serve as an assistant athletic director.

“Tom is the right person at the right time for this position,” athletic director Rory Fitzpatrick said. “It is about putting our young men in the best possible situation to succeed, in sports and their lives, and Tom fits all of that.”

Joyce departed last month to take a coaching job at Loyola High School in Los Angeles. The Wildcats returned to the state semifinals last season, their fourth appearance that deep in the tournament in the last five seasons. They are graduating 6-foot-10 forward Damon Friery, who will play next season at Dayton, and Kent State-bound guard Quinn Woidke. Both started on St. Ignatius’ state-title team.

Of last season’s starters, wings R.J. Jones and Alex Mack are juniors. A pair of guards in sophomore Sami Dari and freshman Denahi Melton came off the bench.
