Steve O’Donnell has opened up on adjusting to his new role as NASCAR President.

NASCAR announced at the end of March 2025 that Steve Phelps would move from his role as President to the newly formed position of Commissioner of NASCAR. As a part of these changes, O’Donnell, previously the chief operating officer, took the role of President.

Jim France, NASCAR Chairman and CEO, stated at the time:

“We are thrilled to name Steve Phelps as NASCAR’s first Commissioner. His leadership, professionalism and well-earned respect from across the sports industry speak to his unique value for the sport.

“With more than 50 years of expertise between them, both Steve Phelps and Steve O’Donnell bring tremendous expertise, stability and a commitment to the bold racing innovations that will continue to serve fans, teams and stakeholders for many years to come.”

When asked how he has been settling into the new position during an interview with Sports Business Journal (below), O’Donnell commented:

“You know, it’s a lot of the same in terms of what I’ve been doing. Really working more closely with Steve Phelps, aligning all of our different departments within NASCAR. Like, here’s the vision, here’s where we want to go in the next three to five years.

“Getting to know some of the different departments a little bit more, coming from the competition side originally. So, it’s been fun.

“We’ve got a lot of great people. Just letting them do their jobs is going to be key to our success.”

The NASCAR President added that the biggest thing on his plate right now is setting the sport up for the next 10 years. He concluded:

“The biggest thing would probably be just looking forward, working with Steve [Phelps] to really set us up for the next five to 10 years. And then kind of working backwards.

“We’ve got a lot of projects, we don’t give ourselves as much lead time as we probably need, so just getting ahead of that with the industry and working backwards, setting us up for success.”

NASCAR heads to Talladega Superspeedway this weekend for the Xfinity and Cup Series.

Rafa Matos Scores CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series Pole with New Qualifying Record at Laguna Seca, Brody Goble Earns Pole for Western Championship

SALINAS, Calif. (May 2, 2025) – Practice and qualifying have concluded for the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli’s CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series National and Western Championships at the Mission Foods Laguna Seca SpeedTour at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Three-time champion Rafa Matos in the No. 57 Concord American Flagpole/SHR Chevrolet Camaro earned his first pole award of 2025, setting a new qualifying record with a best lap time of 1:26.330, beating out 2020 champion Mike Skeen (No. 2 Guthrie’s Garage Chevrolet Camaro) by a mere 32-thousandths of a second.

“It was an awesome session, a lot of fun; the cars were really fast,” said Matos after qualifying. “We’re going about two seconds faster than last time we were here, so quite surprising with the speed. The Pirelli tires are really grippy, the weather is good, the engines are running really strong, so I’m quite happy with the performance of the No. 57 Silver Hare Camaro racecar. Obviously, the Silver Hare boys are doing a tremendous job prepping the car. We had a tremendous weekend last week, finishing second, but definitely looking forward to getting a win here tomorrow.”

Brody Goble in the No. 69 Brown Bros. Ford Lincoln Ford Mustang took the pole for the Western Championship, laying down a lap time of 1:27.103.

“Our weekend’s been going pretty good here,” said Goble. “We got one practice session which, arguably, could help us being a privateer team against all the big National guys who have a ton of data. We kind of unloaded in the top 10 as far as the overall field goes, and we were the quickest in practice in the West, and then we were able to back it up in qualifying here and went P1 in the Western Championship, and I think seventh overall in TA2, so we’re getting there. We’re definitely pushing to make a couple more changes. I definitely made a couple little mistakes that I’m kicking myself on. I was hoping to get a 26 out of the car, and I think we ended up at 27.1, but the team’s done a great job here. We’re thrashing to make all the changes we can and get up to speed against these National boys.”

Barry Boes (No. 27 Accio Data/SLR-M1 Chevrolet Camaro) was the fastest of the Pro/Am Challenge contenders with a time of 1:27.286.

The race will be contested tomorrow at 3:05 p.m. ET. It will be streamed LIVE on Trans Am’s YouTube channel, @TheTransAmSeries, and broadcast LIVE on SPEED SPORT 1, with coverage beginning at 2:30 p.m. ET. An encore presentation will air on SPEED SPORT 1 at 8:00 p.m. ET. For more information on where you can watch SPEED SPORT 1, click here.

Tony Stewart says winning Daytona 500 means less now

Telling Dale Earnhardt stories on what would’ve been his 74th birthday The guys start with a classic Dale Earnhardt story. Then, they talk NASCAR’s Xfinity and Cup Series races at Talladega before pivoting to Texas. NASCAR legend Tony Stewart believes recent Daytona 500 wins hold less significance than those of the past. • NASCAR legend Tony Stewart believes recent Daytona 500 wins hold less significance than those of the past.

Do the recent Daytona 500 victories of drivers like Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Austin Cindric and Michael McDowell mean less than those of yesteryear? One NASCAR legend thinks so.

OK, so Tony Stewart didn’t name names. He made a point not to. But Stewart thinks winning the Great American Race has lost some of its luster.

He fired off his thoughts on the Rubbin is Racing podcast this week.

“When it comes to Daytona now — and man, I’m going to get crucified by a lot of people for this,” Stewart said, knowing he was stepping onto sacred racing ground. “In my eyes, it doesn’t mean the same now as it did 15, 20 years ago. Anybody can win. You look at some of the guys that won the Daytona 500. I don’t want to go into the list of guys because they’re guys I do respect and have friendships with, but they’re not guys who should’ve won the Daytona 500.

“They won the Daytona 500, and that’s all they’ve won. They may have won one or two other races outside of that. I won 49 Cup races. Jeff Gordon won (93) Cup races. Richard Petty won 200 Cup races. Anybody in the field can win the Daytona 500 now.”

Despite compiling those 49 victories and three Cup Series championships between 1999 and 2016, Stewart never captured a Harley J. Earl Trophy. His best finish in the Daytona 500 was second in 2004. He also placed fifth in 2008.

He did claim the summer race at Daytona International Speedway on four occasions.

Stewart admitted he’d trade a few victories from his career for a Daytona 500 win. But the 53-year-old said he would not exchange a Cup Series title for a Daytona 500. He wouldn’t even swap a championship for three Daytona 500 triumphs.

“Even though I don’t l feel like it carries as much weight as it used to, it still carries the weight because it’s still the Daytona 500,” Stewart said. “It’s still the marquee event on the NASCAR schedule. It still has that rich history.

“But the cars have gotten so equal, and you look at guys that are winning some of these, they’re not the ones that led the most laps. They’re not the ones that were up front. They were the guy that was second or third or fourth when the last lap crash happened and NASCAR hit the button to freeze the field.”

Nathan Byrd Pre-Race Quotes:

On Texas Motor Speedway: “I think Texas will be a very exciting race to run this weekend.

“I hear that it’s a treacherous race track, and it takes some confidence to run fast around there. I’m looking forward to challenging myself with another new and very fast track and building more confidence as a truck racer.”

On Texas Motor Speedway Preparation: “I’ve been watching every scrap of truck racing and onboard I can get my hands on and talking to the Young’s Motorsports team to fill in the gaps and give me things to think about while I study video.

“I’ve also hit the simulator to get a general feel and understanding of the track and its racing. However, the pace you can run on the sim isn’t super realistic, so I’m taking it with a grain of salt and cross-referencing it with the footage I can watch.”

On Goals at Texas Motor Speedway: “I think a top 20 finish this weekend would be a very satisfying finish that would reveal my continued improvement as a driver and a good, competitive truck from the team.

“If we can nail things and I excel at this track despite my lack of experience, it would be amazing if we were in the conversation for another top 15. One step at a time, though!”

On 2025 Season: “Out of 10, I would rate our season thus far as a 7/10.

“I’m happy with the progression I’ve made with the team’s hard work and support, and the 7/10 reflects the progress we continue to make and the struggles we’ve had thus far.”

On Rockingham Speedway Finish: “I think the top 15 at Rockingham was very important for my confidence as a driver and a strong declaration about the team’s hard work in bringing a super strong truck to the track.

“Despite the fact that there was a lot of attrition at Rockingham and trucks out of the race by the end, I think we still proved that the Byrdman | Young’s Motorsports combo was truly competitive and 100% a top 20-driver and truck combination, which has been my goal from the beginning of the year.

“I’m looking forward to continuing to make our package more and more competitive and to keep progressing in our pace and program.”

From the drop of the green flag, Alfredo showcased the potential of his No. 42 Dude Wipes Chevrolet Camaro, cleverly drafting toward the front of the field.

An unscheduled pit stop during Stage 1 set the team back, but not out. Alfredo capitalized on the free pass at the conclusion of the opening stage to rejoin the lead lap.

Running inside the top 15 throughout much of Stage 2 and Stage 3, a late-race restart provided Alfredo the opportunity to surge forward, ultimately capturing a sixth-place finish—his best Xfinity Series result of the 2025 season.

Talladega delivered Young’s Motorsports their best finish of the year and marked the team’s third consecutive top-15 finish, dating back to Bristol Motor Speedway in early April.

With 11 races now completed, the No. 42 team continues to build momentum and remains focused on further improvement as the season heads into its critical summer stretch. The group is determined to lower its current average finish of 23.0 and maintain its upward trajectory.

● Calling the Shots: Guiding Alfredo as crew chief of the No. 42 Young’s Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro is longtime crew chief Andrew Abbott.

On Saturday, he will be crew chief in his 142nd NASCAR Xfinity Series race. In his previous 141 races, he has four top-five and 14 top-10 finishes.

The season’s 12th race will be his eighth tango at Texas Motor Speedway as crew chief in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

● Young’s Motorsports’ NASCAR Xfinity Series at Texas Motor Speedway: This weekend’s Andy’s Frozen Custard 300 will mark Young’s Motorsports’ second NASCAR Xfinity Series appearance at the highly fast Texas Motor Speedway.

Last spring, rookie Leland Honeyman Jr. finished 31st after starting 31st, completing all but two laps.

Beyond its growing Xfinity résumé, the Mooresville, N.C.-based organization brings a wealth of experience to Texas through its NASCAR CRAFTSMAN® Truck Series program.

Since 2013, the Mooresville, N.C.-based Young’s Motorsports team has had an average starting position of 23.3 and an average finish of 21.1 in 36 Truck Series Texas Motor Speedway starts overall.

● Young’s Motorsports’ NASCAR Xfinity Series History: Since entering the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2024, the family-owned organization has logged 44 starts and maintains an average starting position of 26.5 and an average finish of 23.3.

Anthony Alfredo Pre-Race Quotes:

On Texas Motor Speedway: “I enjoy racing at Texas Motor Speedway because it is a technical track and fits my driving style.

“Track position will be the name of the game this weekend. Starting towards the front and remaining there throughout the day will be critical.

“If we don’t have track position, an alternate strategy to get us in late in the race will be important.”

On Keys to Success at Texas Motor Speedway: “As with most tracks, it is difficult to pass, so track position will be key.

“We have been struggling with qualifying well and have some things to try in order to improve our starting position this weekend to help us be ahead at the start and execute throughout the day.”

On Goals for Texas Motor Speedway: “Another top 15 finish would be great for our team. We have a lot of momentum coming into this race, and I’m looking forward to performing at a high level.”

On Momentum from Talladega Superspeedway Finish: “I don’t want to be greedy because of how this season has started, but it was pretty gut-wrenching to be just a few inches from a top five.

“In all honesty, if we were able to race all the way back to the line, I felt like I put us in a perfect position to have a shot to win.

“It wasn’t in the cards and will gladly take our top 10 finish and head to Texas with a lot more confidence.”

On The 2025 NASCAR Xfinity Series Season: “My goal this year with Young’s Motorsports is simple: to win a regular-season race and make the Playoffs.

“It’s certainly a tall order, but we can make it happen. We will build this program from the ground up and make that goal a reality.”

After some difficult losses in recent weeks, Corey Heim rebounded in a big way at Texas Motor Speedway. Driving the No. 11 TRICON Garage Toyota, he held on in a fierce battle for the win after dominating most of the night, capturing his third checkered flag of the season.

The race got pushed into double overtime after a rash of late incidents. Entering Turn 1 in the middle of a three-wide situation but Heim did not back down. He actually took the white flag in the second overtime with Ben Rhodes to his outside and Daniel Hemric to his inside — coming out at the other end of the corner in control, taking the victory.

“I wasn’t letting them take that one away from me,” said Heim, who now had 14 career wins in the NASCAR Truck Series. “I’ve given up too many this year so far. Just so proud of these TRICON guys … just overwhelmed. So many restarts there at the end. Guys were trying to split me three wide. I wasn’t letting them take that one from me. I can’t even speak — I’m so overwhelmed. They tried to take me three wide into (Turn) 1 and I just drove until I couldn’t anymore. Just catching my breath, as you can tell.”

Hemric finished second, Rajah Caruth third, Tyler Ankrum fourth and Tanner Grag fifth. Rhodes, Matt Crafton, Bayley Currey, Dawson Sutton, and Ty Majeski filled out the remainder of the top ten.

The wreck-filled race didn’t see its first true long run until the final stage with Heim in control over Carson Hocevar. During a cycle of green-flag pit stops, Hocevar tried to gain some ground by pitting a few laps before Heim, but it didn’t matter in the end. A battery issue that plagued the full-time Cup driver earlier in the race reappeared, forcing him back to pit road. Adding insult to injury, he had to slam on his brakes and stop to avoid Toni Breidinger while exiting his stall. His truck remained intact, but his shot at the win was gone.

At this point, Heim was hoping he could just cruise to the win, holding a lead approaching 16 seconds. However, the green flag conditions did not persist as Frankie Muniz clobbered the wall, ending a solid night for the actor-turned-racer. He was irate over the radio, stomping form his mangled truck in frustration.

On the restart, a dominant Heim remained firmly in control as Stewart Friesen challenged Grant Enfinger for second. Unfortunately, he got loose and slipped up the track, wrecking himself, Enfinger and Chandler Smith who was directly behind them.

The incident forced a brief red flag to repair the SAFER Barrier in Turn 4, but the race finally got underway with Heim again shooting out ahead of the field. But they weren’t done wrecking yet as Jake Garcia and Connor Mosack wrecked.

That wreck pushed the race into overtime with Matt Mills quickly clipping the grass and spewing debris all over the track. The caution was waived, but not before they went three-wide for the lead. Heim held on, but only by a nose. That set up the final restart of the race leaving Heim to fend off attacks from all sides to hang on to the win.

Daniel Ricciardo may have stepped away from Formula 1 racing, but he has hasn’t entirely left the paddock thanks to a new partnership with the Racing Bulls F1 Academy team.

The Australian driver’s premium lifestyle brand, Enchanté, has teamed up with the Visa Cash App Racing Bulls Academy Programme ahead of the Miami race weekend.

The new collaboration will see the Enchanté logo featured on F1 Academy driver Rafaela Ferreira’s car, as well as the team kit.

Announcing the news on social media, the brand posted: “Enchanté is on the F1A grid! We are excited to announce our partnership with the Visa Cash App Racing Bulls Academy Programme as their official lifestyle apparel partner.”

Commenting in a press release, the former driver explained:

“Enchanté has always come from a place of fun,” said Ricciardo in a press release. “Look good, feel good. Jumping in a car at those speeds requires so much confidence, and I know feeling comfortable walking through the paddock feeds all of that.

“This partnership between Enchanté and the Visa Cash App Racing Bulls Academy Program is something we’re really excited about, and we look forward to creating an extension of fashion in the paddock that’s been building over the last few years.”

Ferreira added: “I like to play around with my style and often use clothes to express who I am. This is such an exciting partnership as I love the fun vibe that Enchanté brings, so can’t wait to bring the confidence it gives me to track. I’m looking forward to wearing the collection over the weekend for my first time driving with Visa Cash App Racing Bulls Academy Program in Miami.”

This comes after Ricciardo lost his F1 seat at Racing Bulls. The 35-year-old, who has driven for teams including HRT, Toro Rosso (now Racing Bulls), Red Bull, McLaren, and Renault, left the sport after an almost 14-year-stint in 2024. Over his career, he celebrated eight race wins, 32 podium finishes, and three pole positions.

Ricciardo commented at the time of his exit:

“I’ve loved this sport my whole life. It’s wild and wonderful and been a journey. To the teams and individuals that have played their part, thank you. To the fans who love the sport sometimes more than me haha thank you.

“It’ll always have its highs and lows but it’s been fun and truth be told I wouldn’t change it. Until the next adventure.”
