KA’ANAPALI, Maui – University of Hawai’i’s Emiko Sverduk fired a 1-under 71 in the second round of the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational Tuesday at the Royal Kā’anapali Golf Course. The junior from Long Beach, Calif., leads the Rainbow Wahine at 2-over 146 for the tournament.
Sverduk was 3-under through her first 11 holes before three straight bogeys on Nos. 10-12 dropped her back to even par. She birdied her final hole of the day to get to red figures and a tie for 40th place heading into Wednesday’s final round.
Kellie Yamane carded a 2-over 74 and is tied for 50th at 3-over 147 while Maline Kraus also shot 74 and is 8-over 152 and tied for 76th.
As a team, the Rainbow Wahine moved up to 16th place at 600 after a second round 298. Washington leads the team standings at 18-under 558 after a blistering 15-under 273 on Tuesday. No. 49 Oregon State, Denver, and Sacramento State are nine strokes back at 567.
Also competing for UH are Sofina Firouzi (79=155, t-86th) and Varnika S. Achanta (80=158, t-93rd). Two others are competing as individuals – Wendy Song (79=147, t-50th) and Mia Hirashima (80=158, t-93rd). Song was tied for the lead after Round 1.
The tournament concludes with the third round scheduled for an 8:00 a.m., shotgun start.
