Syracuse legend and WNBA player Brittney Sykes of the Washington Mystics has been selected for the 2024 USA Basketball 3×3 AmeriCup Team this morning. The team will compete at the 2024 FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup from December 12-15 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, aiming to protect their title after winning gold in both 2023 and 2021.

Sykes received an invitation to the 2024 USA 3×3 Women’s National Team development camp last month in Phoenix, Arizona, marking her fourth invitation to a USA Basketball development camp. A total of 13 athletes attended the camp, from which Sykes, Abbey Hsu, Maddy Siegrist, and Azura Stevens were ultimately chosen for the team. All four players have prior experience with USA Basketball, and Sykes notably earned a gold medal in the 5-on-5 format at the 2019 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup. The team will be guided by coach Sydney Johnson, who led the men’s squad to a gold medal at the 2023 USA 3×3 Men’s U23 World Cup.

Having been the highest-drafted player from the Syracuse program in WNBA history, Sykes was selected 7th overall by the Atlanta Dream in 2017. Since then, she has achieved WNBA All-Rookie team honors (2017) and multiple All-Defensive First and Second Team selections. Additionally, she topped the league in steals in both 2021 and 2022. Sykes joined the Washington Mystics in 2023 and announced in September 2024 her participation in the inaugural season of Unrivaled, a women’s 3×3 basketball league founded by WNBA stars Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart.

As stated by USA Basketball, “Unlike 5-on-5 play, 3×3 is conducted on a half-court with a 10-minute game timer and a 12-second shot clock. The game is continuous, as teams are required to ‘clear’ the ball behind the 2-point line after scoring, securing a defensive rebound, or making a steal. The first team to reach 21 points through a combination of 1-point and 2-point field goals wins; if time runs out, the leading team is declared the winner.”

The American women will start off Pool A on December 14 against the Dominican Republic at 3:30 p.m. ET, followed by a game against Uruguay at 6:35 p.m. ET. After pool play, the top two teams from each of the four pools will progress to the quarterfinals on December 15. For the complete schedule, click here.
