CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — One of the founders of Spire Motorsports has entered an agreement to purchase the NASCAR team owned by Rick Ware and is jumping back into the stock car series because he believes the current charters are grossly undervalued.

T.J. Puchyr, who in 2018 alongside Jeff Dickerson launched the Spire team to take over the charter that Furniture Row Racing could not unload, told The Associated Press on Thursday he and Rick Ware Racing have a deal for him to take over Ware’s organization next season.

When Puchyr and Dickerson bought the Furniture Row charter, the market for NASCAR’s version of franchise models was essentially dead. Their agency had been hired by Furniture Row owner Barney Visser to sell the charter and when they couldn’t find a buyer, the two decided to purchase it themselves for $6 million and launch their own team.

That decision jump-started the charter market and the most recent charters sold — when Stewart-Haas Racing went out of business at the end of last season — went for approximately $30 million. Puchyr and Dickerson are largely credited with pumping life and value into an otherwise dormant charter system.

Puchyr last year sold his shares of Spire to Dan Towriss, the CEO of TWG Motorsports and head of the new Cadillac F1 team. Puchyr has spent 2025 consulting with various teams, including RWR and Legacy Motor Club. He’s watched the market closely and has attended several of the recent court hearings involving NASCAR against 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports, who have filed an antitrust lawsuit over the charter agreement those two teams refused to sign last September.

There are only 36 Cup Series charters, which guarantee a team entry into every NASCAR race and a steady revenue stream. Puchyr believes they are greatly undervalued and in one of his final deals with Spire, he helped acquire a charter from Live Fast Motorsports for $40 million.

“I am bullish on wanting to build a three-car team. I believe in the France family and the direction of the sport and I want the rest of the shareholders and industry to know that I believe the charters are worth $75 million or more,” he told AP.

What about Ware’s second charter?

In his deal with Ware, Puchyr will keep Ware on board as a partner, also keep Ware’s son, Cody, in the No. 51 Ford, and retain all of the current RWR employees. Ware’s current second charter is leased to RFK Racing, but Legacy Motor Club made a legal claim that it had entered an agreement to buy that charter next season.

A judge did not agree with Legacy, and said Ware has a lease deal with RFK for 2026 on a second charter. Puchyr believes none of the parties can perform to the Legacy-RWR contract — which he said was written by Legacy — and there is no charter available from Ware for Legacy for either lease or purchase in 2026. Ware has filed a countersuit against Legacy.

Legacy, a two-car Cup team, is currently owned by seven-time NASCAR champion and Hall of Famer Jimmie Johnson. He has recently taken on partnership from private equity firm Knighthead Capital Management, which alongside Johnson is exploring expansion into several other motorsports series.

“If anybody deserves a pass it is Jimmie and if he wants to sit down and talk about it like men, I’d entertain the conversation,” said Puchyr, who was offended that Legacy sued Ware.

“I don’t think Jimmie has all the facts, doesn’t understand the deal we had, and they tried to humiliate Rick publicly. We don’t do business that way.”

Now, Puchyr and Ware are confident the second charter currently leased to RFK will be returned to their team in 2027, allowing Puchyr to expand the organization. He wants to buy a third charter that makes the organization a three-car Cup team by 2027.

Can Puchyr build a winning team?

Ware has done the second-most charter transactions in the industry only to Spire and at one point held four. Now he’s trying to rebuild his organization and win races with his son as the driver, something Puchyr wants to help him achieve.

“I’ve won at everything I’ve done at every level and I think we can compete with these guys,” Puchyr said. “I think we can build it brick-by-brick and it’s going to take people, money and time. It’s not lost on me that (RWR) is the 36th-place car in the garage, we all see it. But I believe we can make this a competitive organization, even a winner.

“And I believe we can get these charters valued at their true worth.”

Ware fields winning organizations in other motorsports series, including NHRA with Clay Millican. A Ware-owned team won the 2024 American Flat Track championship, the 2022 FIM World Supercross Championship and the 2019-2020 Asian Le Mans Series prototype title.

Puchyr did not reveal to the AP how much he’s paying for Ware’s organization, which technically only holds the charter for Cody Ware’s car this season and runs Corey Lajoie in a second “open” car in select races. Once it gets its leased charter back from RFK in 2027, the team will have at least two cars with the focus on purchasing a third.

Purchasing charters is not easy at this time as multiple teams have interest but lack the monetary funds to buy them at the ever-increasing rates. Among them is Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr., who has not been able to get his hands on charters to take his Xfinity Series team to NASCAR’s top Cup Series level.

This weekend, IMSA’s top series will be back in action at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Ontario, the sole race weekend in Canada. The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship will serve as the headliners.

IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Chevrolet Grand Prix

This weekend’s Chevrolet Grand Prix has 35 teams entered in three classes. This will be the only race of the year in which the LMP2 class will serve as the top class.

The LMP2 class has 12 entries, the same as at Watkins Glen, but there are a lot of changes. This is mostly due to the fact that the race is in direct conflict with the FIA World Endurance Championship 6 Hours of Sao Paulo.

At United Autosports, both cars have revised lineups. Tom Blomqvist, normally of Meyer Shank Racing with Curb-Agajanian, will be in the No. 22 alongside Dan Goldburg in place of Paul di Resta, who is a factory Peugeot racer. Blomqvist is fresh off of his first win of the year at Watkins Glen.

Phil Fayer is in the No. 2 alongside Ben Hanley. He’s racing in place of Nick Boulle. At CrowdStrike Racing by APR, Alex Quinn will be in the car as both Malthe Jakobsen and Toby Sowery have commitments.

At Tower Motorsports, Renger van der Zande will drive the No. 8 in place of Sebastien Bourdais, who will be in Sao Paulo. TDS Racing has Hunter McAlrea, the team’s third driver in place of Mikkel Jensen.

Ryan Dalziel is back in the car at Era Motorsport alongside Travis Hill in another revised lineup. Hill, who is making his series debut, is racing in place of Tobias Lutke, who has a scheduling conflict.

AF Corse’s No. 88 is not entered this weekend. In their place is JDC-Miller Motorsports’ No. 79, a one-off entry for Gerry Kraut and Scott Andrews. This team ran last year only at CTMP.

In GTD Pro, there are 10 teams entered, the same as at Watkins Glen. The only change here is at DragonSpeed, where Giacomo Altoe is back in the car in place of Davide Rigon, who will be in Sao Paulo for Vista AF Corse.

The GTD class has 13 teams entered, down from 20 in Watkins Glen. Teams that are not entered include Van der Steur Racing, AF Corse’s No. 21, Triarsi Competizione’s No. 023, Magnus Racing, Cetilar Racing and Lone Star Racing, all of which are part-time teams.

The more surprising team that is not entered is Korthoff Competition Motors, which is a full-time operation. Kenton Koch is currently sixth in points, but would drop back by missing the race.

Not so fast. He’ll be in the No. 021 Ferrari for Triarsi Competizione this weekend alongside team owner Onofrio Triarsi.

At The Heart of Racing, Tom Gamble is out due to his Valkyrie commitments, so Casper Stevenson will take his place. Finally, both DXDT Racing and Gradient Racing are back with their sprint lineups, meaning that Robert Wickens is back for his home race.

IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Canadian Tire Motorsport Park 120

For Michelin Pilot Challenge, they have 34 cars entered for Saturday’s two-hour sprint race. This is down five entries from Watkins Glen.

In the Grand Sport class, there are 20 teams entered, down from effectively 21 in Watkins Glen. The teams that aren’t entered as CarBahn Motorsports with Peregrine Racing’s No. 4, Panam Motorsport’s No. 54 and KohR Motorsports’ No. 60, which never actually saw the track.

AR Motorsports is back with their Porsche for Thomas Merrill and David Hampton. Merrill put the car on the overall pole last time out at Mid-Ohio.

At McCumbee McAleer Racing, Nate Cicero is in the Mustang alongside Jenson Altzman this weekend, replacing team co-owner Chad McCumbee. This will be Cicero’s debut.

At Czabok Simpson Motorsports, there’s a driver swap. Nikita Lastochkin moves back to the No. 2 Porsche this weekend in place of Fayer, who will focus on his LMP2 debut. Harrison Goodman is back in the No. 16 alongside Zach Veach.

In TCR, there are 14 teams entered, down three from Watkins Glen. Teams that are not entered are Gou Racing, HART and RVA Graphics Motorsports. Otherwise, there are no driver changes in the class.

IMSA VP Racing SportsCar Challenge at CTMP

There are 19 cars entered in this weekend’s pair of VP Racing SportsCar Challenge races at CTMP, down two entries from Mid-Ohio.

There are five teams entered in the LMP3 class. The addition is Jonathan Woolridge, who is back with MLT Motorsports. Matthew Dicken is also back with RAFA Racing Team after sitting out Mid-Ohio.

In GTDX, there are five entries, down one entry from Mid-Ohio. AF Corse is not bringing the No. 50 Ferrari, which was driven by Rodin Younessi last time out.

The GSX class has nine entries, down from 11 at Mid-Ohio. Kingpin Racing’s Rob Walker and Turner Motorsport’s Matt Dalton are not entered.

HOME WILL LEAD HIM BACK TO THE TOP. IT FEELS DIFFERENT. IT FEELS EXCITING. THAT IS WHAT KYLE LARSON HAD TO SAY TO ME THIS AFTERNOON AS HE RETURNS TO NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. THE ELK GROVE NATIVE IS LOOKING TO WIN THIS RACE FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW. LARSON, WHO CURRENTLY SITS TOWARDS THE TOP OF THE NASCAR CUP STANDINGS, SEES THIS TRACK AS A WAY TO GENERATE SOME MOMENTUM AFTER SOME OF HIS RECENT RACES HAVE NOT LIVED UP TO HIS STANDARDS. LARSON HAS ONLY TWO TOP TEN FINISHES IN HIS LAST FIVE RACES. THE GOOD NEWS FOR HIM? HE IS NOT FAR BEHIND IN THE POINTS. HIS STRONG PERFORMANCES FROM APRIL AND MAY HAVE KEPT HIM CLOSE AND GIVEN HIS EXPERIENCE AT THIS TRACK, LARSON SAYS HE’S FEELING GOOD. HE SAYS THE KEY TO VICTORY IS HONING IN ON THE RACE STRATEGY. CLOSER TO THIS WEEKEND. JUST BEING BACK HOME IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AND BEAUTIFUL NAPA VALLEY IS ALWAYS, ALWAYS AWESOME. BUT YEAH, WE’LL GET TO SEE FRIENDS AND HANG OUT WITH FRIENDS THAT I DON’T GET TO SEE TOO OFTEN ALL WEEK AND THEN GET TO HAVE FUN OUT HERE ON A ON AN AWESOME RACETRACK. HOPEFULLY THIS WILL BE THE BEGINNING OF OUR TURNING AROUND THIS LITTLE SLUMP THAT WE’RE IN, AND WE CAN GET BACK TO JUST HAVING A WIN, OBVIOUSLY WOULD BE AMAZING, BUT JUST TO GET LIKE A SOLID, CONSISTENT FINISH WOULD BE GOOD. NOW, WHILE HE FOCUSES ON PREPARING FOR SUNDAY, HE ALSO HAS HIGHER STANDARDS FOR HIMSELF. HE TOLD ME IT’S MY HOMETOWN AND I NEED TO PERFORM. HE SAYS HE’LL BE ABLE TO GET A BETTER IDEA ABOUT WHAT IS POSSIBLE TOWARDS THE END OF THIS WEEK, ONCE HE’S ABLE TO HIT THE TRACK FOR PRACTICE, BUT HE TOLD ME HE’S HOPING TO GO FROM LOCAL DRIVER TO LOCAL RACE WINNER ONCE

Elk Grove native and NASCAR champion Kyle Larson is hoping his return to Northern California isn’t just about seeing friends and family. He has a bigger goal in mind: to get back to the top. “Hopefully, this will be the beginning of turning out this little slump we are in,” he said. “A win would be amazing, but even a solid, consistent finish would be good.”Larson saw a lot of success in April and May winning three races. However, he has only two top 10 finishes in the last five races. “We’ve just been a little off on speed,” he said. “It is nice coming back to a track we won at last year and had success prior to that.”Larson’s win last year makes it the second time he crossed the finish line first, with his other win back in 2021. Being back in Northern California has allowed him to do two things: spend time with friends and family, while also focusing on how to win at a track he knows well. “Just being back home in Northern California and Napa Valley is always awesome,” he said. “Hopefully, Sonoma and being back home is what it takes. We have a great team.”The NASCAR Cup Series hits the Sonoma Raceway Sunday for the Toyota/Save Mart 350 starting at 12:30 p.m. See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app | Subscribe to our morning newsletter | Find us on YouTube here and subscribe to our channel

BRISTOL, Tenn. (July 9, 2025) – Just before history is made at Bristol Motor Speedway with the MLB Speedway Classic presented by BuildSubmarines.com on Saturday, August 2nd, the BMS chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities is hoping to set a record of their own for a golf charity event as they host the Speedway Charity Classic Golf Tournament on Monday, July 28, at the spectacular Olde Farm Golf Club in Bristol, Virginia.

The ultra-private, beautifully manicured Bobby Weed-designed 6,857-yard masterpiece will provide a stern test for all participants in the Speedway Charity Classic Golf Tournament. The tournament is being sponsored by Gregory Pharmaceuticals (UPM Pharmaceuticals and Blue Emu) and Baker’s Construction Services. Other sponsors for the event include Food City, who will serve as the Long Barn Sponsor; HS Williams as the Prize Sponsor; Ballad Health, who will participate as the Golf Cart Sponsor. Turtleson is the tournament’s gift partner.

The celebrity-focused tournament is being hosted by Austin Dillon, driver of the No. 3 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet who competes in the NASCAR Cup Series. Other celebrities who are entered in the event include fellow NASCAR Cup Series driver Corey LaJoie and four former Major League Baseball players. Those are Madison Younginer, Chadwick Bell, Jimmy Gobble and Kurt Seibert.

Younginer, from Augusta, Ga., pitched for the Atlanta Braves in 2016 and was drafted in the 2009 MLB draft by the Boston Red Sox. He also spent time with the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants on minor league contracts.

Bell, from Knoxville, Tenn., was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2007 MLB Draft but didn’t sign and played for the Walters State Community College team. In 2008 he was drafted by the Cleveland Indians but also didn’t sign. He finally signed in the 2010 draft with the Texas Rangers. They traded him to the Detroit Tigers where he made his MLB debut in 2017 and pitched in 28 games during his time with the Tigers. In 2018 Bell was claimed off waivers by the Atlanta Braves and spent time in their minor system with the Gwinnett Stripers.

Gobble, from Bristol, Tenn., played in the majors with the Kansas City Royals in 2008 and the Chicago White Sox in 2009. After attending John Battle High School in Bristol, Virginia and recording a career total of 512 strikeouts in four seasons and three state tournament appearances, he attended the University of Kentucky before being drafted by the Royals. Gobble also signed minor league contracts with the Texas Rangers and Colorado Rockies before retiring.

Seibert from Cheverly, Md., played second base for the Chicago Cubs in September 1979. After attending Clemson University, Seibert was drafted by the Cubs in third round of the 1976 draft. The switch-hitter, who threw right-handed, played in seven games for the Cubs during his monthlong tenure with the team.

Team sponsors for the captain’s choice event include Sturdy Lite, Coca-Cola, Bank of Marion, JA Street and Associates, Clineholder Electric, Speedway Motorsports, Stowers CAT, Acorn Electrical and Mycroft Signs.

Tickets are available for the MLB Speedway Classic at Bristol Motor Speedway, a regular season game featuring the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds on Saturday, Aug. 2nd. The game is the first American or National League regular season game to be played in the state of Tennessee. Prior to the game fans are encouraged to explore a 220,000-square foot Fan Zone that opens at noon, and then just prior to the start of the game, a concert headlined by country legend Tim McGraw with special guests Pitbull and Jake Owen will get everyone’s engines revved up for some thrilling baseball.

CINCINNATI – As Reds and Braves players imagine what it will be like playing in front of fans at the iconic venue of Bristol Motor Speedway, there are people who may have a pretty good idea of what they could expect.

Of course, that would be some NASCAR drivers who have competed there.

“There’s no place for the noise to escape,” said 2012 NASCAR Cup Series champion Brad Keselowski. “Whether it’s the cheer of the crowd or the crack of the bat when it hits the ball, you’re going to know it. And it accentuates. Atmospheres like that are so special. It’s one of the things I love about sports. A can’t-miss event.”

Major League Baseball will come to Tennessee when the Reds and Braves meet in the first-ever Speedway Classic in Bristol on Aug. 2. The track, affectionately known as “The Last Great Colosseum” because of its bowl seating around a half-mile oval track, seats more than 150,000 for races.

The MLB game will not reach that capacity because of the configuration of the playing field, but it’s still expected to be loud.

“I imagine it’s going to be a different type of energy,” said Cup Series driver Ryan Preece. “There’s definitely going to be a lot of echoing. The roar of the fans. I know they play in stadiums like this all the time, but I think playing at a racetrack, and you look around and it’s packed, it’s going to be a whole other level.”

Keselowski and Preece, who both drive for Kroger-sponsored RFK Racing, were in Cincinnati on Wednesday to promote the Speedway Classic, along with NASCAR on FOX pit reporter Jamie Little.

At Great American Ball Park before the Reds played the Marlins, Preece threw a ceremonial first pitch with Keselowski catching, while Little was tapped to deliver the game ball to the mound.

“We’ve never seen anything like this,” Little said of the Speedway Classic. “Major League Baseball going to one of the more iconic racetracks in NASCAR. Maybe baseball fans who don’t know NASCAR, they’re going to show up and they’re going to see so much of the history – just like here in this stadium. You’ll learn a lot about NASCAR just by being there.”

Little believed the event would click for fans of racing and all of baseball – not just those who back Atlanta and Cincinnati.

“Because people right now are all about the big event,” Little said. “And that’s what FOX is really good at, like Field of Dreams. That was such a huge success. This is another one of those. It’s bringing the worlds together, and why not? It’s a great experience. If you’re a NASCAR fan, you might not know anything about baseball, but this is something you’ll want to go see.”

While Little said she had never attended a Major League game previously, Keselowski and Preece are longtime baseball fans. Keselowski, who drives the No. 6 car for RFK Racing, grew up in Detroit going to Tigers games but will watch any team.

“I love going to games,” he said. “To me, it’s the best live spectator sport. It’s a combination of the atmosphere and the ability to watch the sport with a pace that allows you to enjoy the company of others. If you’re into stats, that’s something you can enjoy. It’s America’s pastime.”

A native of Connecticut, Preece lived in divided baseball territory. His hometown of Berlin, near Hartford, is about halfway between New York and Boston and an approximate two-hour drive in either direction.

“Half my family were Yankees fans. The other half were Boston fans. We went to Yankee Stadium and went to see the Green Monster,” said Preece, driver of the No. 60 car.

Because the NASCAR Cup Series will be racing in Iowa the same weekend as the Speedway Classic, neither Keselowski nor Preece will be able to see the game in person. Several former drivers are expected to be in attendance in Bristol, and both MLB and NASCAR have been cross-promoting the game on their television and other media platforms for about a year.

“I like seeing when sports collaborate,” said Keselowski, a winner of Cup Series races at Bristol in 2012 and 2020. “And not often does NASCAR get to collaborate with other sports because of just basic logistics. But this is a rare exception to that. It’s a one-of-a-kind event with a baseball game in Bristol. It’s one of those experiences where I don’t think it will be repeated. To put 100,000-some fans in a colosseum environment, I can only imagine what that atmosphere will be like. I guarantee it will be epic.”

In a world where long-tenured Nascar sponsorship is hard to come by, Legacy Motor Club is doing things differently.

The Jimmie Johnson-owned team just inked a major extension with its leading partner, Dollar Tree. The retailer, which joined Legacy Motor Club last year, will be continuing its partnership with the Toyota-backed team through 2028. The firm currently sponsors both of Legacy’s Cup cars with Erik Jones and John Hunter Nemechek.

“We’re excited to extend our partnership with Legacy Motor Club through 2028,” Rick McNeely, chief merchandising officer of Dollar Tree, said. “This continued collaboration puts our brand in front of millions of loyal NASCAR fans and gives us the opportunity to drive deeper engagement with customers in a bold, high-energy environment. We’re looking forward to what’s ahead with Jimmie (Johnson), John Hunter, Erik, and the entire Legacy MC team.”

Legacy is currently having its best year since it transitioned from Richard Petty Motorsports to Petty GMS, followed by Legacy Motor Club (2023). Nemechek is currently on pace to top Jones’ team record of six top 10s in 2023, as he has six top 10s through 19 races.

“It’s an honor to continue carrying the Dollar Tree brand on our cars,” Nemechek said. “Their support helps us deliver results on track, bring value back to their vendor partners and helps build fandom of the Club.”

Legacy Motor Club, under Johnson’s leadership, has made noticeable improvements on and off the track. The team signed Cal Wells III as the CEO, and it has a strategic partnership with Knighthead Capital Management.

Legacy Motor Club is currently in the midst of a complicated lawsuit against Rick Ware Racing over the acquisition of one of RWR’s charters. Legacy believes the team agreed to purchase one of Ware’s charters ahead of the 2026 season, attempting to expand to three cars.

Ware is arguing it is for 2027. However, Ware has an agreement to lease one of its charters to its strategic ally, RFK Racing, in 2026. Ware also reportedly inked a deal to sell his team to former Spire Motorsports co-owner TJ Puchyr, according to the Associated Press. However, Ware was not sourced in the report, leaving questions about the team’s future.
