    Neflix

First things first—how many Dunk releases are lined up for December!? The SuperSonics just released, Nicole Hause’s are dropping soon, and as of today, it seems these extravagant Wizard of Oz Dunks are set to arrive at your favorite skate retailers on 12/19. Check them out:

Explore the full article to view additional media.

Next, can we take a moment to genuinely appreciate these? Those Verdy Dunks a while back were a bit out there. Over the years, there have been numerous contentious releases (they all manage to sell out, of course), but these are definitely hard to ignore.

What I’m curious about is whether folks will actually skate these? To be fair, this is a question I ask every time a new Dunk releases, yet still. Nike SB keeps rolling them out regardless!

Don’t misunderstand me—I’m not criticizing. I was just caught off guard to see these appear in my feed today! I mean, I adore The Wizard of Oz, too! It’s a timeless classic. But indeed, these are quite eye-catching.

Regardless, our buddies at @nikesbornothing announced these will be landing in stores around mid-December. Whether you think they’re outlandish or not, these Dunk releases play an important role in backing your favorite skate shops. That’s why I’m fully supporting them.

Love them or dislike them, they are on the way! For those who can rock these—props to you! If you’re trying to grab a pair and engage in the art of the hustle—cool. But for those who saw these and felt, “I can’t wait to skate those!” Well, I salute you.

  • Vancouver city council member suggests moving the ‘iconic’ East Van Cross

Vancouver city council member suggests moving the ‘iconic’ East Van Cross

One of the most notable public art installations in Vancouver may soon be relocated.

The Monument to East Vancouver, often referred to by locals as the East Van Cross, is at the center of a motion that Coun. Mike Klassen plans to introduce during the council’s meeting on Dec. 11.

Klassen is advocating for city employees to devise a strategy to move the Ken Lum-designed monument from its current site at the intersection of Clark Drive and East 6th Avenue to “a location that is more accessible and visible” for locals and tourists.

    What’s the reasoning behind this?

His motion highlights that the monument’s existing environment is now partly blocked by ongoing developments — a new mass timber structure is about to be finished next to the monument — and that restrictions from private properties limit public visibility and accessibility.

“It’s essential that we empower the artist, and involve other relevant parties we need to consult with,” Klassen expressed during an interview on Wednesday. “However, I’ve always believed that the piece itself hasn’t received the recognition it deserves.”

The City of Vancouver commissioned the monument — which illuminates after dark — in 2009 as part of the Olympic and Paralympic Art Program. It was installed in January 2010, an event that Klassen witnessed personally.

“I was really thrilled about it,” he remarked, mentioning that he uploaded a video of the installation online at that time, which garnered several thousand views.

“It’s iconic, and I doubt there’s anyone who could argue that there is another public art piece that has achieved the same level of popularity, resonance, and connection with our city as the East Van Cross.”

Klassen noted that staff members from Mayor Ken Sim’s office have conferred with Lum regarding the potential relocation of the 57-foot monument. Lum indicated in an email on Wednesday that further discussions are expected with city staff regarding relocation possibilities.

“I don’t have much to share,” Lum said. “The head of Public Art reached out to me, and I responded, asking him to provide a few dates so we can set up a meeting to discuss the possible relocation of the Monument for East Vancouver.”

Lum mentioned that he has not yet received a response.

“So I don’t have much information apart from the fact that a city councillor proposed the idea to relocate the work,” he stated. “I’m unsure how advanced this idea is to move the work. I would hesitate to comment further without first engaging in a detailed conversation with someone from the city.”

    Bob Rennie

Klassen’s motion recommends that any relocation plan “focus on private funding avenues, including developer contributions via the Public Art Program and other philanthropic collaborations.”

He is also advocating for the relocation initiative to be part of the city’s sponsorship and naming rights program “to help draw in potential sponsors and donors to support this effort while maintaining the monument’s artistic integrity and established public significance.”

Klassen made it clear in the interview that he is not implying that sponsorship would result in the renaming of the Monument for East Vancouver to something like the Rogers Monument for East Vancouver or the Scotiabank East Van Cross. However, he did mention realtor Bob Rennie, known for his extensive contemporary art collection in the country.

“I mention Bob Rennie simply because he is frequently noted as someone who’s connected to East Vancouver,” Klassen said.

“Bob is among the most accomplished individuals in the real estate and development sphere. There are others like him who have found great success in business. I would love for them to engage and express, ‘I want to participate in this project as a way to give back and honor my roots.’”

Klassen’s proposal to move the monument traces back to a rezoning application from 2018, which suggested the construction of an office building with a unique honeycomb-like façade on the property just west of the monument.

This 10-storey building is nearing completion and will become the headquarters for ICBC, which is currently situated in North Vancouver.

    ‘Significant cultural symbol and landmark’

During the application process, concerns regarding the future of Lum’s monument surfaced.

Tony Astles, president of real estate for Bentall Kennedy and spokesperson for the development, expressed to the Vancouver Courier at the time that the project team regarded the monument as “an important cultural symbol and landmark.”

“The design team has meticulously considered and honored existing public sightlines to the cross and has shaped the building’s mass to ensure an optimal experience of this important public art piece,” he stated, emphasizing that views from the nearby SkyTrain station and Clark Drive have been preserved.

A report compiled by city staff in 2019 related to the application mentioned that “public art strategists are exploring relocation possibilities for the artwork.” The report further acknowledged that both the city and Lum were aware of the planned private land development when the monument was installed on city land.

    Symbol of East Vancouver

According to Lum’s website, Monument to East Vancouver was inspired by a graffiti symbol that has circulated in East Vancouver for decades. Over time, the symbol has been embraced as a representative emblem for East Vancouver, although its manifestation has generally been subtle rather than pronounced.

“This subtlety is, I believe, reflective of the deeper meanings encapsulated in the symbol,” Lum stated. “These meanings relate to issues of injustice, inequality, oppression, and the trauma associated with poverty and acculturation, particularly in relation to immigrant experiences.”

In the meantime, Klassen refrained from speculating about an alternative site for the artwork but emphasized that it will definitely remain on the east side of Vancouver, despite any potential lobbying that may surface for its relocation downtown or to another area west of its current position.

“You can be assured it’s not going to be shifted far west — it needs to belong to East Van,” he affirmed, reflecting on his high school days when the East Van cross symbol was omnipresent as graffiti, seen on skateboards and incorporated into apparel.

“That’s why I admire what Ken Lum has accomplished with it. He has transformed something that once evoked fear among some kids in East Vancouver into something iconic and almost whimsical.”

The scholarship he earned reflects not just his athletic talent but also his incredible character and drive.

Enrolling in one of the premier collegiate athletic programs in the country, Brogan is set to join Nebraska, a powerhouse that has a history of fostering talent and helping its athletes reach national and international competitions. The enthusiasm is tangible—not only for Brogan’s current achievements but also for the opportunities that await him in this new experience. His coaches and friends from Ell-Saline commend his work ethic, indicating that Nebraska is not merely gaining a high jumper; they are welcoming a leader, an inspiration, and a scholar-athlete who truly understands the significance of honoring his origins.

Whether you’re a devoted follower of Kansas high school sports, a Nebraska fan, or simply someone cheering for young athletes pursuing their aspirations, Brogan’s story is undeniably inspiring. It emphasizes that these moments demand time and effort—they are the result of daily commitment, concentration, and a steadfast belief in what one can achieve.

Brogan Rowley’s accomplishments in high jumping are remarkable—a reflection of both his innate talent and his unwavering dedication to the sport. The Ell-Saline senior distinguished himself by becoming one of only two juniors in Kansas last spring to successfully clear the coveted 7-foot threshold. To put this into perspective, a 7-foot jump in high school track and field is an uncommon and extraordinary feat, positioning Brogan among an exclusive group of athletes nationally. Such an accomplishment not only garners attention; it alters the trajectory of an aspiring athlete’s future.

For those who have been fortunate enough to witness Brogan’s high jumps, they are more than mere athletic displays; they are spectacular moments of finesse. Fans remember the stillness that envelops the crowd as he approaches the runway, his determined focus evident. This is followed by the rhythmic sound of his stride, his explosive take-off, and the breathtaking ascent that defies gravity. When he first cleared the 7-foot bar, the eruption of applause was nearly as overwhelming as the achievement itself. It transcended Brogan’s personal victory; it was an uplifting moment for his peers, coaches, and the entire Ell-Saline community.

However, reaching such impressive heights involved its share of hardships. Brogan’s path has been marked by disciplined training, rigorous preparation, and a keen attention to detail. His coaches often commend his capacity to embrace constructive feedback and channel it into improvement— a trait that has proven invaluable during demanding practices and competitive days. While inherent talent is a factor in any athlete’s accomplishments, it is Brogan’s relentless spirit and resilience in overcoming obstacles that truly differentiate him.

The impact of Brogan’s achievements on the Ell-Saline track and field program is undeniable. His incredible performances have elevated the standard—for his teammates and young athletes who admire him. His success conveys a potent message: from any background, with hard work and self-belief, one can reach impressive heights—be it measured in feet, inches, or dreams achieved.

As Brogan prepares to transition to the University of Nebraska, the burning question arises for high jump aficionados: how much further can he soar? While the answer remains to be discovered, one truth stands clear—Brogan Rowley’s journey continues to unfold, one astonishing leap at a time.

Brogan Rowley’s athletic talents extend beyond the high jump mat—his influence on the basketball court at Ell-Saline has been thrilling. Standing at 6’5” with a vertical jump that seems almost superhuman, he has emerged as a formidable presence in Kansas high school basketball. Over the years, Rowley’s powerful blend of incredible athleticism and fierce determination has injected a new level of excitement into the game, uplifting his teammates and captivating fans alike.

Once Brogan steps onto the court, the anticipation in the gym is palpable. Opposing teams scramble to adjust their strategies in reaction to Rowley’s dominance on both ends of the play. His ability to execute spectacular dunks has become one of his signature traits—moments etched into the annals of Ell-Saline sports history. Who could overlook the famous game in Brookville, where a thunderous dunk from Rowley shattered a backboard, sending shards of glass cascading to the ground, leaving spectators in awe? It’s the kind of moment that lingers in whispered tales, showcasing his extraordinary strength and impact on the court.

Yet, Brogan is much more than just an array of impressive highlights. His teammates admire his dedication and leadership, qualities that may not always be front and center but are vital for the team’s success. As a senior, Rowley has taken on the role of a mentor to younger athletes, encouraging them to strive for their best and fostering unity both on and off the court. His selflessness—whether in setting up plays, aiding in defense, or offering encouragement during challenging games—has left a significant mark on the culture of Ell-Saline basketball.

Coaches frequently commend Rowley’s work ethic and versatility. While his offensive excitement often captures the attention, his abilities to thwart plays defensively and secure crucial rebounds have proven equally crucial to his team’s wins. He is the player capable of shifting the momentum of a game with a perfectly timed steal, a soaring block, or an impeccably executed assist. His well-rounded athleticism and game comprehension enable him to excel in every facet—not merely scoring but enhancing his team’s performance overall.

For the Ell-Saline community, Brogan’s involvement has fostered pride and motivation. His victories have attracted more interest to the school’s basketball program, with local youth looking up to him as a role model on and off the basketball court. Brogan’s story serves as a reminder that with hard work, discipline, and a positive mindset, incredible opportunities are possible. Whether it’s the celebratory cheers following a slam dunk that electrifies the gym or moments of reflection post-practice, his narrative embodies the spirit of rural high school sports: a passion for the game and a drive to leave a meaningful legacy.

As Brogan completes his senior year and advances into collegiate athletics, the legacy he leaves in Ell-Saline basketball will undoubtedly resonate for years. Young athletes who have observed his court dominance will strive to emulate him, and the memories of his remarkable plays, including that famous broken backboard, will forever remain part of the school’s legacy. Regardless of how bright his future is at Nebraska, his influence on the Ell-Saline basketball scene will always be valued by the community.

As Brogan Rowley gazes toward his future with the University of Nebraska’s track and field team, the excitement is at an all-time high—not only for him but also for his supporters who have been alongside him throughout his journey. The Cornhuskers are set to welcome an athlete of exceptional skill and character, and Brogan is stepping into an elite atmosphere that promises to elevate him to new levels, both athletically and personally. This is the kind of opportunity that athletes dream of, and Brogan’s commitment ensures he’s primed to take full advantage of it.

The University of Nebraska has a rich legacy in collegiate athletics, and its track and field program is no exception. Renowned for nurturing elite talent, the program emphasizes not only athletic prowess but personal development and academic success. For someone like Brogan, who has clearly demonstrated equal dedication to his studies and sport, this is the perfect environment. The support-driven, structured setting will grant him access to top-tier facilities, elite coaching, and a network of similarly driven athletes—all crucial elements for shaping the next stage of his journey.

Transitioning to Nebraska means facing some of the nation’s finest high jumpers at the NCAA Division I level—a challenge Brogan is eager to undertake. After achieving the 7-foot clearance as a high school junior, the question now shifts: What lies ahead? With Nebraska’s resources and expertise, it’s easy to envision him smashing previous records, climbing the competitive ladder, and perhaps even contending for national championships. His natural abilities, combined with a demanding collegiate training schedule, pave the way for potential opportunities that extend well beyond NCAA events— perhaps even to U.S. championships or international contests.

However, this transition is not purely about athletics. Moving from the intimate setting of Ell-Saline to a bustling college campus introduces its own challenges, and Brogan’s willingness to confront them showcases his maturity and determination. Growth beyond athletics is equally critical, and the experiences he will acquire at Nebraska—balancing studies, sports, and personal growth—will equip him to tackle life’s significant challenges. This holistic approach has always set Brogan apart, and it will continue to serve him well in the future.

For those observing from a distance—whether they are from the Ell-Saline community, high jump fans, or fellow competitors—Brogan’s story is a beacon of motivation. His opportunity to showcase his talent at Nebraska exemplifies how persistence and passionate commitment can yield remarkable results. And while the focus may now shift to Lincoln, Kansas remains an integral part of his narrative. As he steps onto the collegiate platform, he carries not just his ambitions but also the pride and support of all who have championed him along this journey.

    Rowing for Fresh Water
Nabil Musa, the leader of the Iraq-Kurdistan Water Guardians Organization, Sulaymaniyah, September 2024. Media of the Organization

    By Baran Mohammed

Nabil Musa asserts that if the water from a river or dam isn’t “safe for drinking or recreational activities,” it cannot be deemed “fresh water.” He has dedicated 14 years to safeguarding fresh water via the Iraqi-Kurdistan Water Guardians Organization, in a nation that has limited public comprehension of environmental issues.

His water preservation initiative emerges as the United Nations reports that 884 million individuals globally lack access to safe drinking water, and 2.5 billion people do not have access to healthy water.

The global challenge of fresh water shortages threatens the survival of fauna and flora, posing a critical danger to the entire ecosystem.

The United Nations predicts that by 2050, 5.01 billion people—over half of the world’s population—will face water scarcity.

In light of this, Musa declared the founding of Iraq’s initial organization aimed at safeguarding water resources. The organization’s efforts include campaigns to clean water sources, raise awareness, and establish teams dedicated to water protection across various localities.

The journey began 14 years ago

The Iraq-Kurdistan Water Guardians Organization was established in 2014 when Nabil Musa consulted with a water conservation expert regarding the vanishing Sarchinar water source in Sulaymaniyah’s Northern Province.

“This prompted me to think about how to protect water sources; that expert fueled my motivation.”

Simultaneously, the formation of the organization aligned with initiatives led by environmental activists aimed at revitalizing the wetlands in southern Iraq, which were dried out and devastated in the 1990s by a decision from the former Baath Party leader, Saddam Hussein. This devastation resulted in the displacement of at least 200,000 individuals from the marshlands.

“Our program includes crafting a robust plan to monitor and protect water sources, alongside enhancing community awareness regarding the necessity of keeping these sources clean,” Musa stated.

“We are invested in maintaining the purity of water sources to ensure they are fitting for drinking, swimming, and fishing… without these three criteria, it cannot be classified as fresh water.”

Musa, who studied art, aims to merge environmental advocacy with artistic expression. He often promotes environmental awareness through festivals, theater, performances, boat museums, and documentaries.

On November 30, 2024, his organization took part in an exhibition for the Iraqi-Kurdistan Water Guardians at the Basra Boat Heritage Festival.

“The festival served as a significant platform to connect the youth and introduce them to Iraq’s heritage and culture, as well as the simple lifestyles alongside rivers,” Musa elaborated.

“We regularly organize campaigns to clean and dredge water sources, inviting participation from all ages—young and old, men and women, even schoolchildren—through social media channels.”

    Collaborative efforts yield inspiration

This year, the organization executed several campaigns to clean water sources throughout the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), focusing on locations such as Seagull Island in Lake Dukan, Ahmed Awa Waterfall, Razan Lake, and Kani Shok Spring. Previously, they held events in Tanjaro and Darbandikhan.

These initiatives have sparked enthusiasm among numerous youths who work collaboratively to clean water sources.

Musa confirmed that over 200 volunteers participated in the four campaigns.

Sana Omar, a volunteer who joined the organization in two cleaning campaigns, expressed her joy at being part of a team. “One campaign occurred at Dukan Lake on September 7, 2024, and another on September 21 at Seagull Island.”

“We made significant efforts, yet it was truly inspiring… Unfortunately, we discovered an abundance of litter left by visitors on Dukan Island… I was saddened to see cattle searching for grass amidst the plastic waste,” she added.

The amount of waste collected varies depending on the location; “For instance, on the devastated castle island in Dukan Lake, we gathered 80 bags of waste, whereas at times we fill over 150 bags.”

Waste suitable for animal feed is set aside appropriately, particularly that which is consumed by fish and turtles, while the remaining refuse is moved to a more distant area away from the water source.

Approximately 50 volunteers participated in the two campaigns Omar was involved in.

“Before joining the campaign, I feared that the areas we cleaned would revert to their previous state within days, but we can inspire others to appreciate the necessity of preserving the environment,” Omar proudly stated.

Fostering harmony between people and nature

The Iraq-Kurdistan Water Guardians Organization employs hand-rowed boats to conduct its operations, emphasizing environmental friendliness without reliance on fuel-powered engines.

The organization also founded the Mountains and Plains Club. “The aim is to foster a connection between Kurdish individuals and nature… Our efforts act like psychological therapy that promotes wellness.”

Participants in these endeavors spend time on the water within their boats, requiring the physical ability to row and navigate distances to reach their targets.

“This method enables reconciliation with nature, while also serving as a financial resource for the organization.”

According to the General Directorate of Water Resources in the Kurdistan Region, only 10 to 20% of the water in the KRI undergoes treatment, leaving 80% untreated.

For example, the Tanjaro River, located south of Sulaymaniyah, is tainted by sewage and waste from factories and refineries that pollute it.

This contaminated water then flows into Lake Darbandikhan and the Sirwan River, which are vital drinking water sources for hundreds of thousands, including residents in the Kalar and Darbandikhan districts.

Khaled Suleiman, an environmental authority, notes that the pollution of water sources impacts the health of humans, animals, and plants. “Livestock and agricultural produce are our livelihood, and in this scenario, we risk significant health and economic repercussions.”

    Focusing on future actions

Musa’s NGO aims to create a pilot heavy water refinery project intended for university benefit, currently stalled due to financial constraints.

This initiative involves large tanks, about two meters wide and seven meters high, where sewage water from residences is purified from harmful chemicals and methane gas, resulting in 80% purity by the final tank.

“Donors provide automatic support for the project. Half of it is completed, but a lack of funds has temporarily halted progress,” Musa remarked.

    aw.parezarr

One of the activities of the Iraq-Kurdistan Water Guardians Organization, Sulaymaniyah, September 2024. Media of the Organization

The rivers in the KRI are dictated by a political geography where the principal river branches and streams primarily flow from outside the region, mainly entering from Iran and Turkey.

Approximately 4 billion cubic meters of water are received from Iran, alongside 25 billion cubic meters from Turkey. According to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) data, this amounts to 61% of the water resources in the Kurdistan Region, leaving only 18 billion cubic meters, or 39%, originating within the area.

Concerns persist regarding the diminishing water flow from neighboring nations, while domestic water sources face risks due to mismanagement and insufficient public awareness.

“Our water management strategy lacks permanence and long-term vision; our concern for water fluctuates based on circumstances. Effective water management encompasses more than just dam construction; it is a holistic and multifaceted process,” stated Suleiman.

“Urban wastewater can be utilized for irrigating gardens and green spaces, as enormous amounts of this water are wasted each year.”

Additionally, climate change has resulted in declining rainfall in the region, with precipitation levels dropping from 526.3 mm in 2012 to 347.1 mm in 2022.

    Immediate dangers and gradual solutions

Around 14.5% of water consumed in any country is wasted due to evaporation, contributing to a global total of approximately 15.7 billion cubic meters of evaporated water.

In Iraq, temperatures are rising 2 to 7% faster than global averages. If temperatures increase by one degree Celsius and rainfall decreases by 10% by 2050, fresh water supply may decline by 20%.

This scenario could result in water sources becoming nonexistent for nearly a third of Iraq’s arable terrain by 2050.

Ari Ahmed, Director of Water and Sewerage in the Kurdistan Region, states that the internationally recommended daily water intake ranges from 200 to 250 liters per person, “but currently, individual consumption in the Kurdistan Region ranges from 350 to 400 liters.”

“To preserve our water resources, we require sufficient snow and rain and need to ensure that the region receives its fair share from neighboring nations.”

Musa acknowledges that their efforts are not the ultimate resolution for water pollution challenges in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region; however, he emphasizes that it represents “the initiation of a solution through public education and raising awareness among relevant authorities.”

The major hurdle confronting the organization, as articulated by Nabil, is “the absence of a protective system for water. Our actions serve merely as a call for assistance.”

“The government recognizes our initiatives and events but has yet to coordinate with us or extend support. Nonetheless, we continually provide them with annual reports concerning pollution status.”

The Director of Water and Sewerage in the Kurdistan Region believes that safeguarding water resources is the collective obligation of all relevant governmental ministries.

He elaborated that the Water and Sewerage Directorate is not informed of the organization’s actions, stating, “We do not collaborate with them.”

Musa mentions that another challenge is “the lack of public awareness,” noting that areas where they conduct cleaning campaigns revert to their previous condition after a few months.

  • Searching everywhere to discover all the bowl games that college football provides

Searching everywhere to discover all the bowl games that college football provides

For a fleeting moment, there was consideration for hosting a college football bowl at Wrigley Field, an idea deemed too outlandish even for the seemingly silly festivities of Ditzy December, the amusing counterpart to March Madness in college football.

Nonetheless, the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl is currently in its 14th year at Yankee Stadium and the Wasabi Bowl at Fenway Park endures, suggesting that the Wrigley proposal may have been disregarded without due thought.

College football ventures into unusual territories, yet perhaps none is more bizarre than Fairbanks, Alaska, where a few years back there existed something known as The Ice Bowl, abandoned when the inappropriateness of its name became evident.

Here’s a nod to Boise, Idaho, where the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl has attracted teams for 27 years, even during times when it was neither famous nor closely associated with potatoes, instead being inextricably linked to Roady’s Truck Stops.

None of this relates to the topic of this column, which hopefully will navigate towards identifying the premier college team in the nation, a venture now commencing after a season of pretense. The stakes get real now, with victors and grumblers, including Indiana somewhere in the fray.

During the bleak month of January, nearly overwhelmed by the loudness of the NFL’s Super Bowl extravagance, college football will engage in a loose tangle, with one squad proclaiming itself superior to all others, but will they be happier than the victor of the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl? Perhaps for just a fleeting moment.

I confess I long for the charming eccentricity of the past when a Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl (somewhere in Texas) could still hold significance for someone.

Even the Art of Sport LA Bowl Hosted by Gronk carries an allure, while the Pop Tarts Bowl and the Cheez-It Bowl grasp for significance in Orlando. All in good fun.

One of my all-time favorites has to be the Cheribundi Tart Cherry Boca Raton Bowl, sponsored by a juice claiming “faster muscle recovery” and “increased stamina.” This, I believe, explains why Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens are conspicuously absent from the Hall of Fame.

The progenitor of bizarre bowl titles likely is the Poulan Weed Eater Independence Bowl, now transformed into Radiance Technologies, but the first to demonstrate that college football will tolerate anything for financial gain.

Now the ominous weight of seriousness (read: money) casts shadows and dims the cheer.

Whimsy ought to be embraced lest the entire college football spectacle crumble beneath the pressure of conference realignments, transfer periods, athlete endorsements, misguided alumni, blatant greed, and the most lamentable of all — brackets.

Yes, college football has become a bracket sport now, meaning it is ripe for wagering, complete with seeds and byes just like every other sport. Whereas it once was a guessing game presided over by honest journalists like myself, we tended to get it right more often than not.

It was a more joyful era, back when structure provided us with New Year’s Day festivities and sports writers’ votes helped clarify matters.

I’ll give my fraternity this credit. We rarely erred. A stray Brigham Young or Colorado might surface, but generally speaking, we recognized our Notre Dames from our Nebraskas.

And we did it without compensation.

Today, committees and algorithms, computers, and perhaps even A.I., validate the unmistakable.

While 42 bowl games remain and there are enough teams to fill them, only the chosen dozen truly count, with the field expanded from four to 12, which means that No. 13 will feel just as disheartened as No. 5 used to.

By January 20, one college football team will be crowned the best in the land, yet it won’t necessarily be the last one to win its final game.

Across locations from Albuquerque to Santa Clara to Nassau to Mobile, there will be a scattered array of unimportance, featuring 41 other victors, each delighted to have represented their school, conference, sport, foreign automobiles, auto parts, movers, hormone-free chickens, bland chicken sandwiches, department stores, gasoline, credit cards, and insurance companies.

As it ought to be. Oh, did I forget to announce a national title winner? Oregon.
